Thu, 17 Jan 2013 16:39:50 -0800 2 dead, 13 hurt after helicopter crashes in London http://ytifulu.posterous.com/2-dead-13-hurt-after-helicopter-crashes-in-lo http://ytifulu.posterous.com/2-dead-13-hurt-after-helicopter-crashes-in-lo

LONDON (AP) ? A helicopter crashed into a crane and fell on a crowded street in central London during rush hour Wednesday, sending flames and black plumes of smoke into the air. The pilot and one person on the ground were killed and 13 others injured, officials said.

The helicopter crashed in misty weather just south of the River Thames near the Underground and mainline train station at Vauxhall, and close to the headquarters of spy agency MI6.

Police said one person had critical injuries. Six were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries and seven treated at the scene, ambulance officials said.

"It was something of a miracle that this was not many, many times worse," police Cmdr. Neil Basu said.

The pilot, who was killed, had requested to divert and land at the nearby London Heliport because of bad weather, the heliport said in a statement.

"The London Heliport never gained contact with the helicopter," the statement said.

The aircraft, an AgustaWestland 109, was on a commercial flight, said Philip Amadeus, managing director of RotorMotion, an executive helicopter charter business.

The company identified the pilot as Peter Barnes, 50, whose career included flying in films including "Saving Private Ryan" and the James Bond movie "Die Another Day."

"He was a very highly skilled pilot, one of the most experienced in the U.K., with over 12,000 flying hours," Amadeus said. "We are devastated by the loss of a highly valued colleague and very dear friend."

Police identified the other fatality as 39-year-old Matthew Wood, from south London.

The crash unfolded at the height of the morning commute when thousands of pedestrians in the area were trying to get to work. The weather at the time was overcast and misty with fog and poor visibility, according to the Met Office weather forecasting service.

Video from the scene showed wreckage burning in a street, and black smoke in the area, with a line of flaming fuel and debris marking the area where the helicopter smashed down. Witnesses said the disaster unfolded when the helicopter hit a crane atop a 50-story residential building, the St. George Wharf Tower.

"I was 100 percent sure it was a terrorist attack," said Allen Crosbie, site manager for the landscape firm Maylim Ltd., who was working at the scene.

"There was debris everywhere, a ton of black smoke. Parts of the crane, parts of the helicopter. I heard bang, bang ? I presume it was the helicopter hitting the crane and then the ground. People were just panicking."

William Belsey, 25, a landscape worker, also said he heard the helicopter hit the crane.

"Luckily the crane operator was late for work this morning. He picked a good day to be late," Belsey said.

Mayor Boris Johnson said the crane had been secured and was not in danger of collapsing.

Basu said one of the dead was the pilot of the commercial helicopter, which had been flying from Redhill, south of London. No one else was thought to be aboard, Basu said; the other fatality was a person on the ground.

British aviation authorities had issued a "notice to airmen" warning pilots about the crane, which extended to 770 feet (235 meters) above ground. The crane is lit at night, and police said investigators would look at whether the light was faulty.

The area, roughly 10 blocks from the major Waterloo train and Underground station, is extremely congested during the morning rush hour. Many commuters arrive at the main line stations from London's southern suburbs and transfer to buses or trains there.

Aviation expert Chris Yates said that weather may have played a role. Investigators also would look at whether the crane had navigation lights.

"The question then becomes whether the pilot was fit," Yates said.

ZURICH (AP) - The FIFA security director warns soccer has "a long way to go" to defeat match-fixing by organized crime gangs.

FIFA was involved in 20 match-fixing investigations worldwide last year, and Ralf Mutschke said the problem could get worse because 100 national leagues are vulnerable to corruption when crime syndicates can so easily bet on matches online.

"FIFA is not going to eradicate match-fixing or corruption," Mutschke said Tuesday at a briefing ahead of a two-day European conference on fighting match-fixing that opens Thursday in Italy.

The German former Interpol official accepted "realistically, there is no way" FIFA can tackle organized crime, which has targeted betting on soccer as a profitable scam with low risks of being caught, prosecuted or sentenced heavily.

Mutschke said FIFA needs more help from national law enforcement agencies worldwide, and asked Interpol to persuade its members to help protect the world's most popular sport.

Mutschke said the "the key to success" of his long-term strategy, shaped since joining FIFA last June, is raising integrity levels by educating referees, players and officials to resist approaches by fixers.

"I rely on law enforcement to take care of organized crime, and I would like to take care about the football family," said Mutschke, who selected detectives from Germany and the United States to work with him in Zurich. A third planned recruit from Britain will be based in London.

Mutschke is undertaking a global series of meetings with security officials from FIFA's 209 national members, including workshops in New York, Brazil and Ukraine in the coming weeks.

Still, he acknowledged difficulties in creating a "global alert network" of dedicated integrity officers employed by each member to help monitor 1,500 matches - the World Cup, national team competitions and exhibitions - that FIFA has responsibility for each year.

"This is my challenge and this is my greatest doubt," Mutschke said at FIFA headquarters. "I will probably fail in doing so, but at least I would like to say I tried."

UEFA has led by example, deciding in March 2011 to create a similar network among its 53 members. That initiative followed UEFA's work with prosecutors in Bochum, Germany, to break up a syndicate that fixed matches across Europe, including bribing a Bosnian referee to help fix a 2010 World Cup qualifier between Liechtenstein and Finland.

FIFA, UEFA and Interpol will lead the two-day conference in Rome, as Italy deals with its own damaging case: Juventus coach Antonio Conte has served a four-month ban for not reporting evidence and several Serie A clubs had points deducted.

Mutschke praised the model of cooperation between Italian police, prosecutors and the soccer association.

"This should be, and has to be, the response," Mutschke told The Associated Press in a separate interview. "I think this is the only reaction we could present to the entire world (to show) that we take the fight against match-fixing seriously."

FIFA has had some "little successes" in stopping corruption lately, Mutschke said.

Three match officials reported to FIFA several months ago that they were approached by a fixer while heading to the stadium.

"We could identify the guy. He's part of an FA and he's under investigation and he will be kicked out," said Mutschke, adding the incident was "not in Europe."

Such brazen invitations to corruption have a 50 percent chance of success, Mutschke claimed, and make him "really crazy and upset."

"It demonstrates to me that they have no fear," the 33-year German police veteran said. "They have no fear from us because nobody is reporting these approaches. My goal has to be to change the mentality within the (soccer) community."

Cold-calling was also a tactic of Wilson Raj Perumal, the Singaporean who is notorious in match-fixing history and is in protective custody in Hungary after serving jail time in Finland.

"I have traces of Perumal in more than 50 countries," said Mutschke, who insisted FIFA had not dropped some of the investigations started by his predecessor Chris Eaton. "We are still interested in cleaning up (old cases) but it is difficult."

Eaton's openly aggressive pursuit of evidence and suspects and plain speaking about them, did much to focus FIFA's attention on the scale of match-fixing after a notorious fixed double-header of exhibitions played in Antalya, Turkey, in February 2011.

Mutschke praised that "learn about your enemy" phase, but confirmed a change in style from Eaton, who left FIFA last year to join the Qatar-backed International Centre for Sport Security.

"I'm trying to do probably the same amount of investigating but not telling you about it," said Mutschke, adding that he spent time talking with law enforcement agencies to "get their credibility and their trust back" in FIFA.

While Eaton placed his team of investigators around the world, Mutschke is using his increased budget to create a centralized unit at FIFA headquarters.

"It's always a question of trust and belief if you have a core team," he said.

Mutschke plans to traveling widely in the next six months to press his agenda of better integrity and reporting to FIFA members.

Then, European qualifying for the World Cup enters a high-risk phase: Qualifiers pitting teams already eliminated against opponents who need points to advance to Brazil.

"I think the dream of any match-fixer would be to manipulate a World Cup match. There, the biggest amount of money is set on and bet on in Asia," Mutschke said. "Obviously, and thank God, that did not happen so far."

The World Cup, FIFA's $1 billion per year revenue earner, is believed secure, so far, from match-fixing. But Mutschke acknowledges facing a daunting opponent.

"I still believe that the problem will continue for a while," he said.

Thu, 17 Jan 2013 12:59:50 -0800 How to Sell Your Unused Domain Names | Top 100 Web Hosting http://ytifulu.posterous.com/how-to-sell-your-unused-domain-names-top-100 http://ytifulu.posterous.com/how-to-sell-your-unused-domain-names-top-100

Do you have domain names that you aren?t using? Many people purchase a domain, intending to accomplish all kinds of great things with it, but time passes and the domain remains uselessly inactive.

Selling domain name

Or perhaps you built a website around it and found the niche wasn?t as profitable as you?d hoped. Either way, it?s a waste to let inactive domains just take up space when you could be making money from them. In this article we?ll be looking at how to sell domain names.

Placing a Value on Your Domain Name

If you want to sell a domain name, you first have to have some idea of what it?s worth. This can be trickier than it first appears. There is no way to place an exact value on a domain name, as ultimately it?s worth what a buyer wants to pay for it. However, there are certain factors that add to the value of a domain name.

  1. Extensions

.com domains are still considered the most valuable. After this, .net and .org and then .info. There are now many different extensions, and new ones come along all the time.

Aside from .us, .co, .mobi and .tv, there are many obscure ones associated with various countries. While these are less desirable, if your domain fits some other criteria (such as being one word), it could still be worth something.

  2. Shorter Names are Worth More

In general, the shorter a domain name is, the more it?s worth. This is especially true if it contains an actual word or term (as opposed to just a bunch of letters, like wtxy.com). Hyphens also reduce the value of domains.

    Let?s check some examples:
Webhosting.com should be more sought after compared to 100Webhosting.com, simply because webhosting.com is shorter!

  3. Popular Keywords

Domains that contain ?money? keywords are often sought after by buyers. Exact match domains still have some value, although with Google?s recent updates this is not as true as it was a few years ago. Example of exact match domain names are webhosting.com, bestwebhosting.com, and topwebhosting.com.

  4. Local Domains

Some domains have value to local businesses. If you have a domain that has the name of a city and then a type of business ? such as Londonaccountants.com or Indiawebhosting.com, these names will be attractive to businesses in that region.

Be Careful With Valuations and Estimates

Domain name evaluation

There are quite a few free online tools to estimate the value of domains, but these are notoriously unreliable when it comes to predicting the actual price you can get for your domain. You might try a tool such as Estibot.com, for example, and get excited that your domain is worth over $1,000 (according to them). When you try to sell it, however, you may find that it?s only worth a fraction of this to real buyers.

There are also paid domain evaluations. These are more reliable, but you have to decide if you want to spend money and possibly cut into your profits by having your domain professionally evaluated. The marketplace itself is often the best way to determine the value of a domain.

Where to Sell Domains

So where do you actually find buyers for your domain names? There are a few ways to do this. Let?s discuss them below.

  • Auction Sites

You can always try to sell your domain on eBay. The advantage to this approach is that it doesn?t cost much to list it there, unless you choose many extras such as a featured listing.

There are other auction sites as well, such as Sedo.com, which is a site that specializes in buying and selling domains. Sedo.com is very popular and I myself have sold a couple of domain names through the marketplace.

  • Forums

You can list your domain on various forums. Dnforum.com and Namepros.com are both forums that are dedicated to the topic of domains. On these forums, you can either have a free membership or gain additional privileges by becoming a paid member.

There are also other forums where you can list domains, such as the Warrior Forum and Digital Point. These are both internet marketing forums where you can also sell domains and even complete websites!

  • Target Potential Buyers

Another approach is to contact potential buyers directly. This is very good if you have local domain names (see above) that are appropriate for certain types of businesses.

In addition to the above methods, you can also target websites and blogs with domain names similar to the one you own. If you own a more desirable domain, someone in that niche might be interested in acquiring it.

Closing the Sale

Once you start getting offers for your domains, you still have to make sure you know how to handle the most important part of the transaction ? closing the sale.

Make sure you negotiate for a fair price. As with any type of transaction, many buyers will try to offer you a much lower price than you are asking for. Don?t be too quick to lower your price, especially if the domain hasn?t been on the market for very long. On the other hand, if you repeatedly get low ball offers, it could mean that you are pricing it too high!

You also have to make sure you are protecting yourself, as selling domains can be a little risky. There are scammers who will try to get your domain without paying for it. One of the most common types of scams is when the buyer pays via PayPal or another payment processor and then requests a refund (while keeping your domain).

Escrow

The best way to protect your interests is to use an escrow service such as Escrow.com. If you sell your domain through Sedo.com, escrow is mandatory. However, it?s a good idea to use it whenever you are selling a domain (or website), especially if it has a high value!

Make Money From Your Unused Domains

Selling your unused domains can be a great way to earn extra money online. Some people even turn it into a full time business. Once you?ve sold a few domains, even at modest prices, you?ll become more comfortable with the whole process.

Domains will never go out of style, as long as there?s Internet. You may own one or more domains right now that someone else will be eager to buy from you. It also doesn?t hurt to keep your eyes open for available domains that you think you might be able to turn over quickly.

If you have a good domain name related to web hosting and website building, and you would like to sell it, you can make an offer to me.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- House Democrats are pushing legislation to repeal the federal debt ceiling, saying the borrowing limit has no practical purpose and has come to be used for political maneuvering that can have devastating economic repercussions.

New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler said the debt ceiling is arbitrary, doesn't affect the deficit and has become a Republican means to "blackmail" the country to advance the GOP's political agenda.

President Barack Obama earlier this week said he would not negotiate with Republicans over the debt ceiling, saying talks on spending cuts should be separate from raising the $16.4 trillion debt ceiling and averting a possible first-ever national default.

The debt ceiling has been in place since 1939. The Treasury says it will run out of borrowing power in mid-February to early March.

Wed, 16 Jan 2013 21:17:05 -0800 Video games ? Kenya's new emerging industry with 'huge scope' http://ytifulu.posterous.com/video-games-kenya39s-new-emerging-industry-wi http://ytifulu.posterous.com/video-games-kenya39s-new-emerging-industry-wi

The global gaming business is a multi-billion dollar industry. During its 2012 fiscal year Electronic Arts, an American developer and publisher of video games such as ?The Sims? and ?Need for Speed, raked in revenues of over US$4 billion. Yet in Africa, the games market is relatively small with just a handful of African game developers and most of the population generally viewing gaming as ?not so serious?. In Kenya, young gaming enthusiasts like Nathan Masyoku, chief executive gamer at NexGen Ltd, a video gaming and computer business, are transforming the industry. Masyoku told How we made it in Africa?s Dinfin Mulupi more about Kenya?s emerging gaming industry.

Nathan Masyoku

How did you start NexGen?

After I graduated from Africa Nazarene University with a degree in computer studies I worked for a VoIP telecommunication company for a year as a support engineer. It was however not my passion because I wanted to do something in gaming. Gaming was the one thing that I could do, look up at the clock and find five hours had passed, but kept going.

I met one of my partners, Ayub Makimei, whose dream was to start a retail centre that would sell high-end gaming machines while my dream was to have a centre where people could come and play games at affordable rates. It is expensive to purchase gaming software. In Kenya, they sell at about $100 each. Ten games would be out of reach for most players. It seemed reasonable to have players pay cyber caf? fees as they played. We merged the two ideas to have a place where people could play and also purchase hardware.

We needed $200,000 to execute this idea but we couldn?t get funding. We decided to transform our idea and became an events company. In 2009, we held local competitions and sent a team of gamers to compete in China at the World Cyber Games, a video gaming competition. It was like going to the mecca of gaming. We met people across the world who were as passionate as we were. Upon return, we began holding regular tournaments. Every month, we hold a virtual ?FIFA? championship. This year, we are optimistic that the team we will send to World Cyber Games will perform well. There are Kenyans who compete globally and are highly ranked.

Who is your target market?

Our primary target audience is people in their 20s, however, I know people in their 30s and 40s who play. Contrary to perception, gamers are not obese, idle, anti-social types, hidden in their mother?s garage somewhere playing. They are professional engineers, news anchors and doctors. They are mostly professionals, both male and female, drawn from the low and middle classes. Gaming allows you to do things in your living room that you would not be able to do in reality. In a typical day, I can compete with Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher in the Formula 1 circuit in the morning, lead Arsenal to victory in the champion?s league in the afternoon, and in the evening, I can help the Western powers defeat terrorists. It is an involving experience.

What is the state of the gaming industry in Kenya?

In Kenya ? we have seen the establishment of centres where people can play PC games and Xbox. We have also seen a rise in the spending power of the gamer. Young people are purchasing more hardware like high-end PCs that can run games selling at $1,700 going upwards.

    Wed, 16 Jan 2013 06:25:06 -0800 Gene promotes drug resistance in cancer http://ytifulu.posterous.com/gene-promotes-drug-resistance-in-cancer http://ytifulu.posterous.com/gene-promotes-drug-resistance-in-cancer

Jan. 14, 2013 ? Scientists from the University of Iowa and Brigham Young University (BYU) have identified a gene that may be a target for overcoming drug resistance in cancer. The finding could not only improve prognostic and diagnostic tools for evaluating cancer and monitoring patients' response to treatment but also could lead to new therapies directed at eradicating drug-resistant cancer cells.

Drug resistance is a common problem in many metastatic cancers. It leads to failure of chemotherapy treatments and is associated with poor patient outcomes, including rapid relapse and death.

The research team, including Fenghuang (Frank) Zhan, M.D., Ph.D., and Guido Tricot, M.D., Ph.D., from the UI, and David Bearss, Ph.D., from BYU, initially focused on identifying genes linked to the development of drug resistance in multiple myeloma, a bone marrow cancer that affects more than 20,000 Americans and causes almost 11,000 deaths annually.

Working with serial biopsied cells from 19 myeloma patients, the researchers analyzed genetic changes in the cells that occurred over the course of treatment with very intensive chemotherapy drugs. This approach identified a gene called NEK2 that is strongly associated with increased drug-resistance, faster cancer growth, and poorer survival for patients. The study was published Jan. 14 in the journal Cancer Cell.

Having established the relationship between high expression of the NEK2 gene and poor patient outcome in myeloma, the team then examined the relationship in other common cancers -- including breast, lung, and bladder cancer -- by analyzing gene expression profiles from 2,500 patients' cells with eight different cancers in Zhan's lab.

"In all cases, an increase in the NEK2 gene was associated with rapid death of the patient," says Tricot, who is director of Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center's Bone Marrow Transplant and Myeloma Program at UI Hospitals and Clinics. "So this finding was not unique to myeloma; this is basically seen in every single cancer we looked at."

Taking the findings back to the lab, the team then examined the effect on cancer cells of either enhancing or blocking the expression of the NEK2 gene.

"Our studies show that over-expression of NEK2 in cancer cells significantly enhances the activity of drug efflux proteins to pump chemotherapy drugs out of cells, resulting in drug resistance. Furthermore, silencing NEK2 in cancer cells potently decreased drug resistance, induced cell-cycle arrest, cell death, and inhibited cancer cell growth in vitro and in vivo," says Zhan, UI professor of internal medicine.

The research team is now developing compounds to inhibit NEK2 by collaborating with David Bearss, Ph.D., associate professor of physiology and developmental biology at BYU, in the hope that these compounds may overcome drug resistance in cancer cells.

"We were able to show that if we inhibit NEK2, then we can actually restore sensitivity to drugs that we use right now," Bearss says.

Although development and clinical testing of such drugs for use in patients is not imminent, Tricot notes that the findings may have clinical use within the next several years.

"NEK2 expression may be a diagnostic or prognostic marker for drug-resistant cancer," he says. "If NEK2 is high, that would suggest that the prognosis is poorer and the patient might benefit from more aggressive treatment. The other potential use is for monitoring the cancer's response to therapy. If NEK2 levels increase, that would suggest development of increased drug resistance and might indicate that a change of treatment would be helpful."

    Wed, 16 Jan 2013 04:40:18 -0800 Horsemeat found in beef burgers http://ytifulu.posterous.com/horsemeat-found-in-beef-burgers http://ytifulu.posterous.com/horsemeat-found-in-beef-burgers

Horse DNA has been found in some beef burgers being sold in UK and Irish supermarkets, the Republic of Ireland's food safety authority has said.

The FSAI said the meat came from two processing plants in Ireland, Liffey Meats and Silvercrest Foods, and the Dalepak Hambleton plant in Yorkshire.

The chief executive of the FSAI, Professor Alan Reilly, said there was no risk to the public.

However, he added that eating horsemeat "was not in Irish culture".

"Whilst, there is a plausible explanation for the presence of pig DNA in these products due to the fact that meat from different animals is processed in the same meat plants, there is no clear explanation at this time for the presence of horse DNA in products emanating from meat plants that do not use horsemeat in their production process," he said.

"In Ireland, it is not in our culture to eat horsemeat and therefore, we do not expect to find it in a burger.

"Likewise, for some religious groups or people who abstain from eating pig meat, the presence of traces of pig DNA is unacceptable."

The burgers were on sale in Tesco, Dunnes Stores, Lidl, Aldi and Iceland.

A total of 27 products were analysed, with 10 of them containing horse DNA and 23 containing pig DNA.

Horsemeat accounted for approximately 29% of the meat content in one sample from Tesco.

Retailers have said they are now removing all implicated batches of the burgers.

Wed, 16 Jan 2013 00:57:13 -0800 Personal Injury Lawyers Sue Other Personal Injury Lawyers Over ... http://ytifulu.posterous.com/personal-injury-lawyers-sue-other-personal-in http://ytifulu.posterous.com/personal-injury-lawyers-sue-other-personal-in

I can?t say I?m sorry to see this kind of lawsuit. Citing unfair trade practices, several Florida personal injury firms have brought suit against their brethren. The problem? Accusations of using ?runners? to get clients, also known as ambulance chasing.

The concept of chasing cases has long been a stain on the profession. I know I am not alone in being upset to see our reputations tarnished by the less reputable. Whenever any member of a community acts inappropriately, it affects the reputations of others. Decent cops and priests know all about this concept when they see wayward others from their insular communities in the news in unflattering ways.

Personally, I think outing chasers is a good idea, something that I have written about before (Ambulance Chasers, Runners and Other Creeps). In that 2009 post I wrote:

The message should be loud and clear: If you employ runners to chase cases at the local hospitals you shouldn?t be practicing law. And it should be equally clear that the vast, vast majority of attorneys look down with utter disdain on such conduct. Without question, most of the lawyers that I run into, on both the plaintiffs and defense side, practice law conscientiously and ethically. The corrupt ones should not expect others to come to their defense.

When lawyers practice unethically it tarnishes the entire profession and makes it more difficult to represent those in need of legal services.

According to the brief article I read, these are the?firms that brought the suit (in other words, those pissed off at seeing others chase): Lawlor, Winston, White & Murphy in Fort Lauderdale; Metnick, Levy & Long in Delray Beach; Balkan & Patterson in Boca Raton; and Gary E. Susser in Boynton Beach. Suit was filed in Broward Circuit Court on Jan. 4.

Those firms are alleging that the bad guys are: Bader, Stillman & Adler in Margate; Madalon Law Firm in Hollywood; and Gregory Schwartz P.A. in Hollywood are using runners as middlemen to sign up suits.

I am sure that I am not alone in wondering what the evidence will look like. My gut reaction is that the firms that brought suit will have learned of the alleged chasers from clients that they have, who had been approached by ?investigators? for the chasing firms. In other words, someone gets handed a business card in a hospital and is pitched on legal services, and the patient goes elsewhere and lets the lawyers that they actually hire and trust what happened before they wanted in the door.

The case should be very interesting to watch.

Alexandria, VA -- The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is pleased to announce that the theme of Earth Science Week 2013 will be "Mapping Our World." This year's event will promote awareness of the many exciting uses of maps and mapping technologies in the geosciences.

Earth Science Week 2013 materials and activities will engage young people and others in learning how geoscientists, geographers, and other mapping professionals use maps to represent land formations, natural resource deposits, bodies of water, fault lines, volcanic activity, weather patterns, travel routes, parks, businesses, population distribution, our shared geologic heritage, and more. Maps help show how the Earth systems -- geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere -- interact.

"With this theme, Earth Science Week highlights the ways that Earth scientists use maps to understand our planet and how humans use the land," says Geoff Camphire, AGI's Manager of Outreach. "For centuries, people have relied on maps to represent their knowledge of Earth and its systems. From old-world celestial maps and nautical charts to the satellite imaging and digital GIS technology of the 21st century, map-making provides an interactive way of knowing our world."

Tue, 15 Jan 2013 20:34:50 -0800 U. S. Federal Safe Routes to School program reduces child injuries by more than 40 percent in New York City http://ytifulu.posterous.com/u-s-federal-safe-routes-to-school-program-red http://ytifulu.posterous.com/u-s-federal-safe-routes-to-school-program-red

Jan. 14, 2013 ? The national Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program was funded by Congress in 2005 in an effort to create safe environments for American children to walk or bike to school. Has the program been effective? In New York City, most definitely, according to a new study conducted at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health that evaluated the program here. Researchers found that the annual rate of injury to school-age pedestrians ages 5-19 fell 44% during the peak times for walking to school, in neighborhoods where the program was implemented. Significantly, the injury rate did not drop in parts of the city where the SRTS safety program was not in place.

Findings of the report are published online in Pediatrics.

The researchers analyzed motor vehicle crash data for 169,000 pedestrian injuries between 2001 and 2010 for different age groups and neighborhoods with and without SRTS interventions to assess the program's effectiveness.

Interventions for reducing pedestrian injury included new traffic and pedestrian signals, the addition of exclusive pedestrian crossing times, speed bumps, speed boards, high-visibility crosswalks, and new parking regulations. More than 120 NYC schools were selected by the NYC Department of Transportation for the interventions because they had the highest rates of pedestrian injury.

The researchers created a school-travel time indicator variable to further identify crashes that occurred during days and hours when school-aged children would be traveling to or from school. This time period was defined as 7 AM to 9 AM or 2 PM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday between September and June.

"Our data show that interventions to make the built environment safer can greatly reduce injuries to children as they walk to school," says the lead author of the study, Charles DiMaggio, PhD, associate professor of Epidemiology and research director of the Center for Injury Epidemiology and Prevention at Columbia.

The Safe Routes to School program was funded through 2012, and is now in place in all 50 states at approximately 10% of elementary and secondary schools. Under the current federal transportation bill, MAP-21, the Safe Routes program will no longer have dedicated funding. It is now one of a number of possible programs eligible for funding based on state and local priorities, making it "even more important to evaluate and demonstrate the effectiveness of programs like Safe Routes to School," according to Dr. DiMaggio.

"Our study provides compelling empirical evidence that is essential to guiding policy makers," says senior author Guohua Li, MD, DrPH, Mailman School professor of Epidemiology and Anesthesiology and director of the Center for Injury Epidemiology and Prevention. "It indicates that the Safe Routes to School program has made a marked difference in improving the safety of school-age children in New York City."

Tue, 15 Jan 2013 18:46:47 -0800 PST: Is Wilshere getting enough protection from refs? http://ytifulu.posterous.com/pst-is-wilshere-getting-enough-protection-fro http://ytifulu.posterous.com/pst-is-wilshere-getting-enough-protection-fro

Talkers of today?s Arsenal-Manchester City contest (2-0 for City) included DOGSO, two-footed lunges and what we?ll call ?protection.?

We addressed DOGSO already ? in the wonkish parlance of the refereeing world, that?s ?Denial of Goal Scoring Opportunity.?

On Vincent Kompany?s two-footed lunge, I generally say the same thing in these circumstances: we can have a legitimate debate about true red card-worthiness here, because the City center back did get the ball, and did not get much of Jack Wilshere?s shin. (In fact, Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has already said he plans to appeal Kompany?s ejection.)

But the bottom line for me is that Kompany simply must be smarter there. Defenders who go in with both feet, cleats up, get little sympathy from me. Even the savviest, smoothest tackler cannot know how this is going to look to the man in the middle. We see this time and again, where a clean tackle really does look vicious, and all it takes to elicit ejection is an imperfect angle from the only set of eyes that matter.

In this case, referee Mike Dean was certainly going to level matters and 10 on 10 if there was any cause to do so. City was never going to get the benefit of the doubt, and Kompany should have known so.

It looked heavy and dangerous, so it just was not the smartest of actions.

    Now ? onto ?protection.?

Gunners fans are wondering if Wilshere is getting enough of it? And they are right to do so. Consider:

    source:

The man was kicked and hacked mercilessly. Arsenal players, clearly frustrated, let Dean know how they felt, admonishing the veteran referee with a couple of serious hissy-fit temper tantrums (pictured, as Wilshere lays on the ground).

Meanwhile, Wilshere played it cool, proving something today, taking the punishment in midfield and returning for more. No that it surprises anyone.

Gunners teammates are surely a little more sensitive here, seeing as Wilshere only recently got back on the field after about 14 months away from the game. He?s a real talent, this 21-year-old England international ? but he cannot take too many matches like Sunday?s.
