The Devil Is in the Heels

Shoe shopping.

Shoe shopping.

Fuse/Thinkstock.

You have stumbled into the hushed, expensive interior of a high-end Midtown department store. The shoes in front of you are red patent leather 4? -inch platforms of near perfect design, and, you know before you casually turn them over, vertiginous price.

You have read Adorno. You are able to think critically about your desire for the shoes. Furthermore, you have a healthy class-hatred for people who dress habitually in clothes from this store, and have a sense that it is wrong for things to cost this much in a world where people can?t afford a bowl of rice.?

You do not, in some basic way, condone the store and its airs and gorgeousness and museum-like awe; in certain ways you think people are not supposed to look this curated, this lushly perfect, your aesthetic in fact inclines toward scruffiness, toward accident, toward carelessness, but you are unable to, say, walk out of the store.

You do not entirely believe that the shoes will transform you into someone else, or a better version of yourself. You are able to understand that you will just be you in the shoes, and there will be no magical solving of your problems, no special radiance cast off by the shoes. (Actually, you are a little unclear about the special radiance. You suspect that there might be some special radiance.)

You are aware that the women you admire most in the world would not be standing here, subtly condescended to by this particular salesman, exquisite and high level and nearly indistinguishable from compliment as that condescension is. You cannot for instance see Janet Malcolm or Susan Sontag wasting 40 minutes of their mental energy on these particular shoes.

The fierce and wonderful feminist critic Rebecca West wrote a series of articles critiquing women?s desire for what she called ?elegance? in the New Republic in 1916. In the midst of her scathing self-examination she wrote, ?I would waste on personal ends vitality that I should have conserved for my work.? She was talking about a particular purple satin dress. She was talking about the frivolous freelance articles that she would take on to pay for it, rather than focusing on reading and thinking and art.

Now safely ensconced in the next century, you could deliver a very neat and polished speech about how today?s women have the luxury of caring about shoes, and also pursuing their intellectual or professional goals. You would argue, very convincingly, that women can choose how much time to spend on their hair, their clothes, and that choice is the important thing. At the same time, you are aware that in this polished speech there is a little core of unresolved something. That you are, even at this very moment, with the lipstick-red patent leather shoes in your hand, wasting on personal ends vitality you could have conserved for your work, and you are equally aware that most of the men you know are not wasting the same amount of vitality in the shoe department, or getting highlights, or whatever the 21st-century New York equivalent of squandering your energy on ?elegance? is, even if they are wasting a little more of that vitality than they used to. Rebecca West?s 100-year-old complaint against herself, against women, against the culture, is really not all wrong, or antiquated or irrelevant. Why, you might fruitfully ask yourself, are you here frittering away a Wednesday afternoon? ?

And then of course there is the fact that the shoes are perilously expensive. They are so perilously expensive that they catapult you into a different world from the one you normally inhabit; it feels as if you are suddenly dealing in Monopoly money, a foreign currency in a country you are about to leave, and are not entirely sure of the exchange rate anyway. The fact that there is no way you can possibly afford or justify the shoes frees you somehow, as if the person calmly holding the box of shoes?and even the box is especially pleasing?could not possibly be you, and anything she does would be the reckless act of a stranger. ?

This is what?s wrong with America, you are well aware, this culture of credit and fantasy, dangerously intermingled. This seductive, fundamentally consumerist, Great Gatsby idea that you can reinvent yourself with stuff.

Here are some of the things you have recently decided not to buy because they were ?too expensive?: a winter scarf, a sandwich for lunch near your office, a subscription to the New York Review of Books, raspberries.

If you do walk out with the shoes?and maybe you don?t, maybe some impulse of sanity, or presage of guilt, prevents you before it is too late. But if you do, they work like a drug?the anxieties that were plaguing you before you enter the store have lifted. As you step out into traffic, the still and stagnant city is suddenly charged with possibility.

The parties you have scribbled in your calendar seem more glittery or interesting or fun, and you in the shoes, more daunting, more sylphlike, more free, more invulnerable. Another shopper has helpfully pointed out that the shoes are ?unsubtle? but subtlety has never been your thing.?

Here of course, the puritanical and even moderately sensible will point out that this feeling of escape, of anything being possible, is temporary, artificial, shallow, but that is neither the point, nor entirely true.

Do you want to be the kind of person who sacrifices, overreaches, for a pair of shoes, who imbues them with a romantic overlay that a material object cannot possibly sustain? Maybe you do.

Terror Fight Shifts to Africa

Source: WSJ

Military counterterrorism officials are seeking more capability to pursue extremist groups in Africa and elsewhere that they believe threaten the U.S., and the Obama administration is considering asking Congress to approve expanded authority to do it.

The move, according to administration and congressional officials, would be aimed at allowing U.S. military operations in Mali, Nigeria, Libya and possibly other countries where militants have loose or nonexistent ties to al Qaeda's Pakistan headquarters. Depending on the request, congressional authorization could cover the use of armed drones and special operations teams across a region larger than Iraq and Afghanistan combined, the officials said.

(snip)

Some U.S. officials argue that the existing authority is sufficient, especially if the administration works through African forces and regional governments?as it says it would prefer. But others say new authority is needed if officials decide they need to do more to pressure militant groups. The debate is going on both within the administration and the Pentagon, where officials remain divided over whether more direct action against militant groups in Africa will be needed.

(snip)

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM originally known as the Salafist Group for Call and Combat, once resisted ties to al Qaeda. New leaders changed the name and embraced al Qaeda, but experts don't believe it takes its directions. There are also other groups in Mali, such as the Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa, which experts said have only indirect ties to the al Qaeda leadership in Pakistan.

Ford recalling new Fusion for faulty headlamps

7 hrs.

Ford Motor Co. plans to recall more than 19,000 of its new Fusion midsize sedans to replace faulty headlamps, the second service action hitting the new and well-publicized vehicle in just a week.

Last Friday, the automaker announced that it would recall about 80,000 vehicles, including nearly 16,000 Fusions, because of a potential fire risk.?

The Detroit Bureau:?Did Ford Fudge Mileage Numbers on Fusion, C-Max Hybrids?

The latest recall was triggered by the discovery of a manufacturing defect at a Ford supplier that could result in the vehicle?s headlamps dimming and becoming hazy over time, according to documents the automaker filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety? Administration.

In all, 19,106 Fusion sedans are covered by the latest recall. A total of 15,833 were impacted by the previous recall which was triggered by reports of fires in both the new Fusion and the newly redesigned Ford Escape crossover. (In all, 73,320 of the CUVs will need repairs.) According to government records, coolant can leak from Fusion and Escape models equipped with Ford?s 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine. If that comes into contact with hot engine or exhaust components a fire is possible.?A company spokesman said the headlamp problem was discovered during internal testing of the Fusion sedan, which was completely redesigned for the 2013 model-year and which went on sale in September. The maker says it has received no reports of accidents or injuries related to the problem ? though NHTSA warned that the defect could nonetheless increase the possibility of a crash.

Honda Upping Exports of US-Made Vehicles, Adding American Jobs

The Escape has been recalled four times since its launch in mid-2012, twice for fire-related issues.

Ford has been investigating additional reports of fires in Europe but says it has not found evidence of a problem requiring a recall there.

Ford officials say the speed with which they identified the latest headlamp problem underscores their commitment to deal with safety problems in a rapid manner.?

Superstorm Sandy Destroys 10s of Thousand of Collector Cars

But the spate of problems involving two of its best-known models -- and two of the most significant redesigns for 2013 ? threaten to hammer the maker?s reputation. The news complicates Ford?s efforts to rebuild its reputation for quality and reliability after setbacks in a number of recent surveys, such as the widely quoted Consumer Reports Automotive Reliability Study and the J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Survey.

The auto industry, as a whole, has seen an apparent increase in recalls over the last several years and industry observers believe that may be the result of the unintended acceleration scandal that snagged Toyota in late 2009 and 2010. Federal regulators became embroiled in the fiasco when it became known they had backed off on a planned recall of Toyota vehicles. Since then, analysts contend, automakers have felt pressure to recall vehicles for problems that previously might have been handled with less attention-grabbing dealer service bulletins.?

Motorists Paying More But Loans Easier to Come By

While Ford has faced a series of recalls in recent months most have involved relatively modest numbers of vehicles.? Some of the biggest service actions have involved Toyota and Honda, which have recalled millions of vehicles in just the last two months. Barring even bigger announcements by Ford or some other competitor, Toyota and Honda are in a dubious race to see which will recall the most vehicles in 2012. Honda led that list in 2011, Toyota the year before.

ECB discusses rate cut, depicts bleak 2013

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - The European Central Bank pondered an interest rate cut on Thursday and predicted the euro zone economy would shrink again in 2013, leaving the door open to a possible reduction in borrowing costs early next year.

ECB President Mario Draghi said the policymaking Governing Council held a wide discussion on interest rates before opting to leave them on hold. The euro fell against the dollar and the yen in response.

The Council also touched on the idea of cutting its deposit rate into negative territory. By effectively charging banks for their deposits rather than paying them interest, the ECB could push banks to put their money to work elsewhere.

"There was a wide discussion ... but the consensus was to leave the rates unchanged," Draghi told a news conference, a hint that opinions differed about what course to take. When there is unanimity, the ECB chief generally says so.

In the end, the ECB left its main interest rate at a record low 0.75 percent for the fifth month running despite new forecasts which suggest the euro area economy will contract next year as it has this. It left the deposit rate at zero.

On the idea of negative deposit rates, Draghi said: "We briefly touched upon the complexities that such a measure would involve and possible unintended consequences, but we didn't elaborate any further."

The bank's new staff projections put gross domestic product in a range of falling by 0.9 percent to growing by just 0.3 percent next year, suggesting contraction is far more likely than not. Draghi said downside risks prevailed.

In September, the ECB's staff had penciled in a significantly higher range of -0.4 to +1.4 percent for the euro area economy.

"The somewhat downbeat ECB forecasts, the somber tone of the ECB statement and Draghi's admission that the ECB had a 'wide discussion' over many issues including a potential rate cut also keep the door open for a cut in early 2013," said Berenberg Bank economist Holger Schmieding.

The Governing Council's decision to leave its main interest rate unchanged for now matched economists' expectations in a Reuters poll, which also showed opinion was split down the middle over the chances of a cut early next year.

"Later in 2013, economic activity should gradually recover as global demand strengthens and our accommodative monetary policy stance and significantly improved financial market confidence work their way through the economy," Draghi said.

But a political impasse over the United States' fiscal policy, which could presage steep tax hikes and budget cuts if a deal is not reached, could also dampen sentiment for longer, he said.

The level of uncertainty was reflected in the ECB's first attempt to forecast 2014, for which it penciled in growth of between 0.2 and 2.2 percent. The midpoint forecast for 2012 was pushed slightly lower to -0.5 percent.

The ECB will also continue to supply euro zone banks with all the liquidity they ask for in the central bank's refinancing operations at least until July 2013, Draghi said.

WAITING FOR SPAIN

While financial markets have calmed since the European Union and the International Monetary Fund put in place further steps to help Greece, and the ECB promised to do what it takes to preserve the euro, the bloc's economy has sunk into recession from which it shows few signs of emerging soon.

An inflation forecast of 1.1 to 2.1 percent next year -- compared with the ECB's target of close to but below two percent -- means there appears to be plenty of room to cut rates further.

But some at the central bank are wary of taking any action that could see the bloc's governments soft-pedal on budget consolidation efforts. Others, it seems, feel the economy warrants more stimulus now.

Market interest rates vary greatly across the 17-country bloc and the ECB is focused primarily on fixing what it calls the 'transmission mechanism' for passing on its rates to all corners of the euro area before.

The most obvious way of doing that would be using the ECB's yet to be used new bond-buying scheme, which could drive down government borrowing costs.

The ECB has not yet bought any sovereign debt under its new program -- dubbed Outright Monetary Transactions (OMT) -- because Spain, which is seen as most likely to become the first country to make use of the new support measure, has not yet fulfilled the precondition of asking for help from the euro zone's rescue fund.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has said he wants assurances that ECB intervention would bring down Spain's debt yields, Draghi refused to commit to any targets for bringing down Spanish borrowing costs.

"The conditions under which the OMT is going to be activated are very straight," he said. "They don't talk about negotiations or a certain interest rate or anything like that."

U.S software guru McAfee arrested in Guatemala

Eccentric software tycoon John McAfee, wanted in Belize for questioning in the shooting death of his neighbor, has been arrested in Guatemala for entering the country illegally, his Guatemala attorney told ABC News.

Before McAfee's arrest, he told ABC News in an exclusive interview he would be seeking asylum in Guatemala. McAfee was arrested by the Central American country's immigration police and not the national police, said his attorney, who was confident his client would be released within hours.

"Thank God I am in a place where there is some sanity," said McAfee, 67, before his arrest. "I chose Guatemala carefully."

McAfee said that in Guatemala, the locals aren't surprised when he says the Belizean government is out to kill him.

"Instead of going, 'You're crazy,' they go, 'Yeah, of course they are,'" he said. "It's like, finally, I understand people who understand the system here."

But McAfee added he has not ruled out moving back to the United States, where he made his fortune as the inventor of anti-virus software, and that despite losing much of his fortune he still has more money than he could ever spend.

In his interview with ABC News, a jittery, animated but candid McAfee called the media's representation of him a "nightmare that is about to explode," and said he's prepared to prove his sanity.

McAfee has been on the run from police in Belize since the Nov. 10 murder of his neighbor, fellow American expatriate Greg Faull.

During his three-week journey, said McAfee, he disguised himself as handicapped, dyed his hair seven times and hid in many different places during his three-week journey.

He dismissed accounts of erratic behavior and reports that he had been using the synthetic drug bath salts. He said he had never used the drug, and said statements that he had were part of an elaborate prank.

Investigators said that McAfee was not a suspect in the death of the former developer, who was found shot in the head in his house on the resort island of San Pedro, but that they wanted to question him.

McAfee told ABC News that the poisoning death of his dogs and the murder just hours later of Faull, who had complained about his dogs, was a coincidence.

McAfee has been hiding from police ever since Faull's death -- but Telesforo Guerra, McAfee's lawyer in Guatemala, said the tactic was born out of necessity, not guilt.

"You don't have to believe what the police say," Guerra told ABC News. "Even though they say he is not a suspect they were trying to capture him."

Guerra, who is a former attorney general of Guatemala, said it would take two to three weeks to secure asylum for his client.

According to McAfee, Guerra is also the uncle of McAfee's 20-year-old girlfriend, Samantha. McAfee said the government raided his beachfront home and threatened Samantha's family.

"Fifteen armed soldiers come in and personally kidnap my housekeeper, threaten Sam's father with torture and haul away half a million dollars of my s***," claimed McAfee. "If they're not after me, then why all these raids? There've been eight raids!"

Before his arrest, McAfee said he would hold a press conference on Thursday in Guatemala City to announce his asylum bid. He has offered to answer questions from Belizean law enforcement over the phone, and denied any involvement in Faull's death.

False Report of McAfee Arrest on Mexico Border

Over the weekend, a post on McAfee's blog claimed that he had been detained on the Belizean/Mexico border.

On Monday, a follow-up post said that the "John McAfee" taken into custody was actually a "double" who was carrying a North Korean passport with McAfee's name.

That post claimed that McAfee had already escaped Belize and was on the run with Samantha and two reporters from Vice Magazine.

McAfee did not reveal his location in that post, and a spokesman for Belize's National Security Ministry, Raphael Martinez, told ABC News on Monday that no one by McAfee's name was ever detained at the border and that Belizean security officials believed McAfee was still in their country.

However, a photo posted by Vice magazine on Monday with their article, "We Are With John McAfee Right Now, Suckers," apparently had been taken on an iPhone 4S and had location information embedded in it that revealed the exact coordinates where the photo was taken -- in the Rio Dulce National Park in Guatemala -- as reported by Wired.com.

A subsequent blog post on McAfee's site confirmed that the photo had mistakenly revealed his location, and said that Monday was "chaotic due to the accidental release of my exact co-ordinates by an unseasoned technician at Vice headquarters.

"We made it to safety in spite of this handicap," the post read. "I had to cancel numerous interviews with the press yesterday because of this and I apologize to all of those affected.

"I apologize for all of the misdirections over the past few days . ... It was not easy to exit Belize and required many supporters in many countries."

Belizean authorities said there was no manhunt, and have questioned McAfee's sanity.

"He is extremely paranoid. I would go far as to say even bonkers," said Belize Prime Minister Dean Barrow, circling his index finger.

But now, all the misdirection may be coming to any end. Asked if he feels safe, McAfee told ABC News, "Oh, absolutely. I feel like I've come home."

Navigate Financial Difficulties With These Personal Bankruptcy Tips ...

TIP! It is a common misapprehension that it is impossible to obtain loans or financing after declaring bankruptcy. Although there may be some truth to this, it should still be better than your credit situation was before you filed for bankruptcy.

If the IRS or your other creditors are on to you about the money you owe, you should consider filing for bankruptcy. Of course your credit will be hurt when you file for bankruptcy, but sometimes this is your best choice. Check out the following tips to see what filing for bankruptcy entails and what can happen if you do.

TIP! Before you file, make sure you understand current bankruptcy laws. The laws change a lot, so you need to look them up and have a better idea of how to properly approach the bankruptcy process.

Don?t use a credit card to pay off your taxes before filing for bankruptcy. Most states do not look at this debt as chargeable, and you could end up owing money to the IRS. If the tax has the ability to be eliminated, the debt can be too. This makes using a credit care irrelevant, since bankruptcy will discharge it.

TIP! Find out what you exemptions are prior to filing bankruptcy. The Bankruptcy Code provides a list of all the different kinds of assets that you can exclude.

Be sure to list any and all debts that need to be eliminated when you file your bankruptcy paperwork. If you fail to include a debt in your filings, you will still owe it when your bankruptcy is discharged. It?s your duty to be sure you have everything written down that is important because some debts that could have been discharged may be missed.

TIP! Do not get sizable cash advances from credit cards before filing for bankruptcy because you think the debt from the cards will be erased., Not only is this fraud, but you could still be liable to repay the money at the end of the day.

If you?re going to hire a lawyer you have to pick one that?s experienced with bankruptcy. There are many bankruptcy lawyers available to pick from. While it may be tempting to hire the most inexpensive one, you will want to first make sure that they have experience with filing for bankruptcy.

TIP! Be sure you know what the difference between Chapter 13 and Chapter 7 bankruptcy is. Research them online to see the positive and negative aspects of each one.

Tell the truth on your bankruptcy petition. If you withhold information from the court, your petition may be refused. Make sure that you disclose all income and assets that are relevant to the bankruptcy proceedings. This will show to the court that you are sincere in wanting to resolve your issues and this will help you along the way.

TIP! Before your first meeting, make a list of questions you have for the bankruptcy lawyer. Remember that lawyers charge lots of money for their time.

Educate yourself on all personal bankruptcy laws. If you plan to file for bankruptcy and cannot afford an attorney, you might think about representing yourself. Be scrupulous and thorough in your research and preparation if you decide to do so. A lot of people make mistakes and do not secure a discharge properly. Double- and triple-check your filings so this doesn?t happen to you.

TIP! Produce a comprehensive list of everything you owe. Your debts in particular will serve as the basis of your claim.

One of the most important things to remember when filing for bankruptcy is to be honest and truthful every step of the way. You must avoid the temptation to conceal any valuables, money or other assets from the courts. If they find that you have lied, you may be faced with fines, penalties or the inability to file in the future.

TIP! Before declaring bankruptcy, be sure you?ve weighed other options. If your debt is relatively low, you may be able to manage it with credit counseling.

Try to obtain a second job. Talk to your creditors about getting extensions instead of filing bankruptcy. Many times they will agree to this, and you may be able to avoid bankruptcy.

TIP! Educate yourself as much as possible before filing for bankruptcy. Review your situation and see how many of your debts you can have discharged.

Assess your documentation for accuracy. Even when your attorney fills out the paperwork, you are responsible for ensuring all your information is accurate. Remember that the lawyer has a lot of cases, so details may be remembered or might have to be mentioned again. It?s a good idea to keep a careful eye on the paperwork and proceedings because of this.

TIP! An understanding of your rights is important before filing for bankruptcy. Some debtors will try to tell you your debt with them can not be bankrupted.

As said in the beginning of the article, personal bankruptcy is always an option. Nonetheless, you should remember the negative impact filing for bankruptcy will have on your credit rating. For this reason, filing for personal bankruptcy should be your last resort. Learn all that you can about bankruptcy before you file. That way, you will be prepared to make the best decision for a happy financial future.

Does business want a productivity handout? | | MacroBusiness

CEDA is getting a good run in the press today with a survey of its business-heavy membership asking what the big issues are for next year. The winner is improving productivity but?there are some rather worrying trends in that data about how that might be achieved. Here are the first four charts:

That?s all very solid. The top six are all producitivty improving measures and in the right order of priority with the top two squarely the resposibility of business. But when we turn to how they might be achieved, there is a perverse reliance upon government to do the heavy lifting:

And when it comes to actual bread and butter competition, which is where businesses need, in actuality, need to deliver productivity improvements to their own shareholders, enthusiasm suddenly wanes:

But for government it?s all about improving competitiveness in general:

One wonders how indicative this is of Australian corporate managers. There is no doubt that the Australian business media has a bizarre and hypocritical fixation with celebrating every utterence of the captains?of industry, especially those comments that pertain to productivity. Yet it never confronts those same managers with their role in the measure, preferring to blame government exclusively. It?s possible to read this as a moment of epic group think that, like a fog, ?has settled over the entire business sector. Born of twenty years of easy growth, industry consolidation and dimimshing competition, our business elite may well have developed an enetitlement mentality all of their own.
