FTSE falls as Italian woes hit banks

LONDON (Reuters) -The FTSE 100 index edged lower on Monday, led by financial stocks which fell on worries over Italy's economy after the country's prime minister said he would resign.

Traders had mixed views over whether the fall would be temporary, with some still expecting a traditional year-end rally, while others backed selling equities in case the stock market fell further.

The blue-chip FTSE 100 was down by 0.3 percent, or 17.63 points lower, at 5,896.77 points by around midday, halting a three-week rally, with the index having risen more than 5 percent from a low of around 5,600 points in mid-November.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said on Saturday that he would resign after the 2013 budget is approved, increasing political uncertainty in the heavily indebted country and probably bringing forward elections to February.

Hartmann Capital trader Basil Petrides said the uncertain outlook meant investors should book profits on the back of recent gains on equities, with the FTSE 100 up around 6 percent so far since the start of 2012.

"If you've got profit on the table, it should be banked. At the moment, I have a short-term negative bias. The market could gently trickle lower," he said.

Banks and insurers, which are exposed to the euro zone's debt crisis due to their sovereign bond holdings, were among the worst-performing sectors, and Petrides said he had "short" positions out on that sector to bet on further falls.

The FTSE 350 banking index was down by 0.8 percent, with HSBC accounting for much of the FTSE 100's fall as it slipped 0.7 percent.

Worries over a deterioration in the euro zone crisis also hit insurers, with Aviva falling 2.5 percent to make it the worst-performing FTSE 100 stock.

"I am 'short' on Barclays and Aviva," said Petrides.

YEAR-END RALLY?

Securequity sales trader Jawaid Afsar had a more positive outlook, expecting the market to have the year-end rally it traditionally experiences, despite the problems in Italy.

The FTSE 100 is also trading above the 50-day and 200-day simple moving average levels, which lie at around 5,800 points and 5,700 points, respectively, and which is often used as a sign by technical traders that the index could rise further.

Oriel Securities strategist Darren Winder said UK miners could be on track for a strong 2013, and Afsar also backed buying shares in that sector.

Afsar added he was considering buying shares in Barclays following the dip in the bank's share price. He said he could buy the stock at around the 240-245 pence level, with Barclays down 1 percent on Monday at around 249 pence.

Afsar said fund managers would still look to put money into shares ahead of the year-end, with stocks offering better returns via dividend payments than cash or sovereign bonds, where returns have suffered due to interest rates at historic lows.

"There are a lot of fund managers who are underweight on equities, and they'll be looking to put their money to work," he said.

Depression and Chronic Pain Is Extremely Common

In some patients, depression follows the pain, and if you can effectively treat the pain, the depression would get better. And in some patients the depression seems to drive the pain, says Dr. Portenoy. He explains that when these two conditions coexist, patients need carefully coordinated treatment.

Packers beat Lions 27-20, take NFC North lead

(AP) ? While other teams face complicated playoff scenarios and confusing tiebreakers, the task is quite simple for the Green Bay Packers.

Beat the Bears at Soldier Field next weekend and the NFC North title is theirs.

The Packers opened a one-game lead over Chicago with their 27-20 victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday night. The Bears had lost at Minnesota a few hours earlier, ceding control of the division to a team that began the year 2-3.

"I kind of did some foreshadowing the last couple weeks about this is how some of these games are going to go," Aaron Rodgers said. "It's going to be ugly at times, but the main thing is the wins. We're 9-4 right now, we're first in the division by a game, putting ourselves in good position, not only for the division but potentially maybe for a first-round bye.

"The division is the first goal," he added. "We can wrap things up next week. It's a tough opponent, a tough place to play, a lot on the line."

There's little on the line for the Lions except pride.

Calvin Johnson had 118 yards receiving to put him over 1,500 for the year, but it wasn't enough to keep the Lions (4-9) from dropping their fifth straight. After touchdowns on their first two drives gave them a 14-0 lead, the Lions crossed midfield six times but could only manage a pair of field goals by Jason Hanson.

Detroit tied an NFL record by losing its third straight game in which it blew a lead of 10-plus points, according to STATS Inc.

"We're probably the best three-quarter football team in the league," Stephen Tulloch said. "And then in the fourth quarter we don't find a way to win games. Unfortunately, that's the way football is, sometimes things go your way and sometimes they don't. This season, that hasn't gone our way. We haven't had a break and we just haven't finished."

Actually, the Lions started unraveling in the second quarter and Green Bay made the most of the switch in momentum.

The season's first significant storm dumped almost 3.5 inches of snow on Green Bay, making Lambeau Field look like a snow globe for most of the night and the football glisten with moisture. As Matthew Stafford drew his arm back to throw midway through the second quarter and with the Lions up 14-0, the ball slipped out of his hands.

"I don't really have much of an explanation for it," Stafford said. "I wish I could have gotten on top of it. It squirted away from me again."

And Packers rookie Mike Daniels was right there to scoop it up, rumbling 43 yards for the score that pulled Green Bay within 14-10. He is Green Bay's first rookie defensive lineman to return a fumble for a TD since 1941.

"Mike Daniels' play was the momentum shift for us that we needed," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "That was a big play."

His Lambeau Leap needs some work, however. Daniels only managed to get about halfway up the wall, hanging there as fans pounded him on the back.

"I was too tired," Daniels said.

The Packers forced another turnover on the next drive when Sam Shields picked off Stafford. But they couldn't do anything with the ball, and went into halftime still trailing.

"It didn't start the way we wanted it to ... (but) our guys just keep playing, keep punching," McCarthy said. "The impressive part of our football team is it's just not a couple of guys making a play. We had a lot of different guys make plays tonight."

Rodgers gave the Packers their first lead of the day, scrambling away from Lions defensive end Willie Young and running 27 yards for the score. It the longest scoring run of Rodgers' career, and also was Green Bay's longest rushing touchdown of the season.

The Lions tied it at 17 on Hanson's 46-yard field goal. But the Packers got another boost from a most unlikely source: their running game.

Plagued by inconsistency and injuries all year, Green Bay's running game had accounted for just three scores coming into Sunday. But the Packers kept the ball on the ground for all seven plays in the game-winning drive, running over the Lions on one carry after another.

They used all three of their running backs ? Alex Green, recent returnee Ryan Grant and DaJuan Harris ? and picked up at least two yards on each play. They had double-digit gains on three carries, including Harris' 14-yard scoring run.

"That's what your linemen want, that's what the backs want. That's the way we play football here in December," McCarthy said. "At that point in the game, you could feel it was starting to tilt. That was a big series for us."

The Lions pulled within a score on Hanson's 34-yard field goal with 7 seconds left. But the onside kick went out of bounds, and the countdown to the Packers-Bears game was on.

"I'm focused on going to Chicago and winning the division," McCarthy said.

NOTES: The Packers scored twice on the ground for the first time since Dec. 11, 2011. ... Rodgers failed to throw a TD pass at Lambeau, ending a 35-game streak. ... Lions DT Nick Fairley sacked Rodgers for the third time this season. ... Lions TE Brandon Pettigrew did not return for the second half after injuring his ankle.

How often should you change your passwords?

3 hrs.

Your company and some websites force you to regularly change your passwords, like every three months or so. How often do you?need to change your passwords for all your other logins (if at all)?

Lots of organizations require mandatory password changes because it's long been considered a security "best practice." However, there are pros and cons to that rule, so before you decide if you need to regularly change your other passwords, let's take a look at the times when changing your password often makes sense???and when it doesn't.

Why companies enforce password duration policies

When you change your password every few months, it limits how long a stolen password is useful to a stealthy attacker???how long he or?she has access to your account. If someone steals your password and you don't know about it, the attacker could eavesdrop for an unlimited time and glean all sorts of information about you or do other damage.

Therefore, for decades, many security guidelines have recommended frequent password changes, usually between 30 and 180 days. Windows Server has a default of 42 days.

However, in most cases, these might now be outdated policies or recommendations. At the very least, it's highly debatable that changing passwords frequently actually does increase security.

Why changing your passwords often may be a waste of time
A?Microsoft study?a couple of years ago found that?mandatory password changes cost billions in lost productivity???for very little security payoff. Other computer security resources (Purdue University,?Health Informatics, and?Life as a CIO blog, for example) point out that the "best practice" of frequently changing passwords does little to improve security but much to increase everyone's frustration. Users typically end up choosing variations on the same simple passwords (e.g., password3) or resorting to sticky notes taped to their laptops. In other words, in some cases password changing requirements could actually?increase?risk.?

Security expert Bruce Schneier?points out?that in most cases today attackers won't be passive. If they get your bank account login, they won't wait two months hanging around, but will transfer the money out of your account right away. In the case of private networks, a hacker might be more stealthy and stick around eavesdropping, but he's less likely to continue to use your stolen password and will instead install backdoor access. Regular password changes won't do much for either of those cases. (Of course, in both instances, it's critical to change your password as soon as the security breach is found and the intruder blocked.)

In today's crazy hacker-friendly system, frequent password changes are less relevant than ever. The?NIST?says that password expiration policies are "irrelevant for mitigating cracking," because?not only are hackers totally on to our clever password tricks, they've got more advanced hardware and software:

Generally, password expiration periods are not of much help in mitigating cracking because they have such a small effect on the amount of effort an attacker would need to expend, as compared to the effect of other password policy elements. Suppose that an organization reduced its password expiration period from 60 days to 30 days. An attacker would simply need to use twice the hardware resources to compensate for this change.

Hackers have?machines that can break 348?billion?NTLM password hashes per second. (NTLM is a password encryption algorithm used in Windows. At 348 billion NTLM hashes per second, any 8-character password could be broken in 5.5 hours.)

So, really, changing all your passwords every 30 or 90 days isn't very worthwhile and isn't likely to increase your security. That's a good thing, because?many of us would rather clean the toilet than change our passwords.

Accounts for?which you might want to change your passwords regularly
As is usually the case, there are exceptions. For certain types of accounts, hackers may be more likely to "listen in" and silently stick around for months until they glean important information from you. Schneier points out that if your kid sister or the tabloid press (if you're a celebrity of some sort) has your Facebook password, for example, they'll likely listen until you change your password, which could be months or years if you never find out about it.

In general, this is Schneier's advice:

You don't need to regularly change the password to your computer or online financial accounts (including the accounts at retail sites); definitely not for low-security accounts. You should change your corporate login password occasionally, and you need to take a good hard look at your friends, relatives, and paparazzi before deciding how often to change your Facebook password. But if you break up with someone you've shared a computer with, change them all.

I would add you might consider regularly changing passwords for communication-type sites that don't have two-factor authentication: Email, especially, and things like IM or conferencing services. These are more snoop-friendly services where hackers might listen in for months before you find out. (On the other hand, you?really?should be using an email service with two-factor authentication, since it's a goldmine for hackers if they can get into it. It's probably the most important account for you to secure, along with your password manager and computer account.) Some services, including Gmail, Facebook, and Dropbox, show you active sessions, so as a general security precaution, you can check those to make sure no one else is logging into your accounts.

Above all else: Beef up your security in general
It's much more important that you choose a unique password for all accounts???one as long as possible???and strengthen all your other security options (two-factor authentication, making your password recovery questions unguessable, and backing everything up), because, in the end,?strong passwords aren't enough???no matter how often you change them.

If you have any weak or duplicate passwords anywhere, definitely change them as soon as possible. Also consider each regular security breach a reminder to?audit and update?not just your passwords, but your security setup in general???if needed. After all of that, enjoy the peace of mind that you're doing the best you can???and save yourself the hassle of changing all your passwords on a schedule.

(AP) ? "Those jobs aren't coming back."

That's what Steve Jobs reportedly told President Obama when asked at a dinner in early 2011 whether Apple would consider moving some of its manufacturing from China to the United States.

Jobs' successor, CEO Tim Cook, might have another response for Obama: Yes, we can.

Though the metal edges of its PCs and mobile devices are as sharp and severe as ever, Apple is emerging under Cook's leadership as a kinder corporate citizen. Cook's announcement this week that the company is moving the production of one of its Mac computer lines to the U.S. is just the latest step in a softening of the company's image following the October 2011 death of CEO and co-founder Jobs.

"Cook is a gentler being in terms of how he projects himself," says Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi. That's partly of necessity, she says ? few people would tolerate Jobs-like arrogance in a new CEO ? but it's also a reflection of Cook's personality.

Cook was born in Alabama and at age 52 it seems he is still very much a southern gentleman. He joined Apple Inc. in 1998 from IBM Corp., where he worked for 12 years. Starting out as Apple's senior vice president of worldwide operations, he rose through the ranks to become chief operating officer. He made a name for himself as an expert organizer of manufacturing processes and a deft manager of supply chains. Cook ran Apple's day-to-day operations for years before he was named CEO in August 2011, but stayed in the background while Jobs commanded the spotlight.

Cook didn't say which computers Apple would make in the U.S., or where the company might locate new facilities. But bringing assembly-line jobs back to the U.S. lights a symbolic beacon of hope for working-class Americans who worry that the global economy has no use for them.

Cook's reforms have been both internal and outward-facing. Earlier this year, he visited the Chinese factories where Apple products are assembled, amid an Apple-financed audit of working conditions. Shortly after, Foxconn promised to limit working hours and raise wages.

U.S. workers are getting a better deal too. The Wall Street Journal reported in early November that the company will let some employees take up to two weeks of paid leave to work on pet projects that might benefit the company. The program is similar to a famous perk available to Google employees, who get to devote 20 percent of their time to entrepreneurial "hobbies."

In addition, the company now matches employee donations up to $10,000 a year. Tim Cook himself made $100 million in charitable donations early in the year, another contrast to Jobs, who had little interest in philanthropy.

Under Cook, Apple has also become more investor-friendly. Jobs, perhaps scarred by Apple's lean years in the 1990s, was opposed to Apple parting with its cash reserves. That lead to the company accumulating a rainy-day fund of nearly $100 billion in cash by the end of his tenure ? a hoard that investors would have liked for themselves.

This year, Apple has begun sharing its wealth with investors for the first time in two decades, by paying dividends of nearly $10 billion a year.

Cook's diplomacy has extended into enemy territory. Jobs was furious that phones running Google Inc.'s Android software mimicked Apple's iPhone so closely and vowed to wage "thermonuclear war" against the company through patent infringement lawsuits. The worldwide onslaught of litigation is still ongoing, but in early November, Apple agreed to a ceasefire on one front: It settled all its patent suits against Google partner HTC Corp., a struggling Taiwanese maker of smartphones.

The terms were not disclosed, but company watchers believe HTC will be paying Apple royalties on the phones it makes, and some saw it as a sign that Apple was taking a more rational stance and starting to put Jobs' take-no-prisoners fury behind it.

Carl Howe, an analyst with Yankee Group, says the image of a "softer" Apple that's emerged this year doesn't mean Cook is a softie.

"Make no mistake: he's not necessarily a kind, gentle guy if he needs to get something done. He's a very hard-nosed, demanding boss," Howe says. "And he's very much of the Steve Jobs model, where if you're the janitor you get to make excuses. If you're the vice president, you don't."

Cook, in fact, engineered a major shakeup in Apple's top ranks this fall. Scott Forstall, the long-serving head of iPhone software development, stepped down and his responsibilities were divided among other executives. Company watchers attributed his departure to difficulties collaborating with other departments and to the scathing reviews that greeted Apple's Maps application, which replaced Google Maps.

Another senior vice president left at the same time: John Browett, who headed Apple's stores. Browett had tried to make his mark by cutting employee hours, leaving fewer people to help customers. Browett was overridden. He lasted just six months on the job.

"Being gentle and being a pushover are two different things," says Milanesi.

HBT: 'Mid-January' surgery for A-Rod

We learned earlier this week that Alex Rodriguez needs left hip surgery to repair a torn labrum and bone impingement. Now we have a rough idea of when the surgery will take place.

According to the Associated Press, Rodriguez said this morning that he will have the surgery in ?mid-January.? A-Rod made the comment at a breakfast he hosted for about 150 high school players who are competing in his annual Miami tournament. The question was actually asked by one of the players. The reason for the delay is that Rodriguez is trying to build up strength in the area prior to going under the knife.

It?s expected that Rodriguez will need 4-6 months of recovery time following surgery, so he could be out until at least June. And given that he?s 37 years old, it?s possible the rehab process could take longer. The Yankees have reportedly made a one-year, $12 million offer to free agent Kevin Youkilis in their efforts to land a stopgap option for third base.

Rodriguez is owed $114 million over the next five seasons, including $28 million for 2013.

More Egypt protests called after Morsi concession

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's liberal opposition called for more protests Sunday, seeking to keep up the momentum of its street campaign after the president made a partial concession overnight but refused its main demand he rescind a draft constitution going to a referendum on Dec. 15.

President Mohammed Morsi met one of the opposition's demands, annulling his Nov. 22 decrees that gave him near unrestricted powers. But he insisted on going ahead with the referendum on a constitution hurriedly adopted by his Islamist allies during an all-night session late last month.

The opposition National Salvation Front called on supporters to rally against the referendum. The size of Sunday's turnout, especially at Cairo's central Tahrir square and outside the presidential palace in the capital's Heliopolis district, will determine whether Morsi's concession chipped away some of the popular support for the opposition's cause.

The opposition said Morsi's rescinding of his decrees was an empty gesture since the decrees had already achieved their main aim of ensuring the adoption of the draft constitution. The edicts had barred the courts from dissolving the Constituent Assembly that passed the charter and further neutered the judiciary by making Morsi immune from its oversight.

Still, the lifting of the decrees could persuade many judges to drop their two-week strike to protest what their leaders called Morsi's assault on the judiciary. An end to their strike means they would oversee the Dec. 15 vote as is customary in Egypt.

If the referendum goes ahead, the opposition faces a new challenge ? either to campaign for a "no" vote or to boycott the process altogether. A low turnout or the charter passing by a small margin of victory would cast doubts on the constitution's legitimacy.

It was the decrees that initially sparked the wave of protests against Morsi that has brought tens of thousands into the streets in past weeks. But the rushed passage of the constitution further inflamed those who feel Morsi and his Islamist allies, including the Muslim Brotherhood, are monopolizing power in Egypt and trying to force their agenda.

The draft charter was adopted amid a boycott by liberal and Christian members of the Constituent Assembly. The document would open the door to Egypt's most extensive implementation of Islamic law, enshrining a say for Muslim clerics in legislation, making civil rights subordinate to Shariah and broadly allowing the state to protect "ethics and morals." It fails to outlaw gender discrimination and mainly refers to women in relation to home and family.

Sunday's rallies would be the latest of a series by opponents and supporters of Morsi, who hails from the Muslim Brotherhood.

Both sides have drawn tens of thousands of people into the streets, sparking bouts of street battles that have left at least six people dead and hundreds wounded. Several offices of the Muslim Brotherhood also have been ransacked or torched in the unrest.

Morsi, who took office in June as Egypt's first freely elected president, rescinded the Nov. 22 decrees at the recommendation Saturday of a panel of 54 politicians and clerics who took part in a "national dialogue" the president called for to resolve the crisis. Most of the 54 were Islamists who support the president, since the opposition boycotted the dialogue.

In his overnight announcement, Morsi also declared that if the draft constitution is rejected by voters in the referendum, a nationwide election would be held to select the next Constituent Assembly.

The assembly that adopted the draft was created by parliament, which was dominated by the Brotherhood and other Islamists, and had an Islamist majority from the start. The lawmaking lower house of parliament was later disbanded by court order before Morsi's inauguration.

If the draft is approved in the referendum, elections would be held for a new lower house of parliament would be held within two months, Morsi decided.

The president has maintained all along that his Nov. 22 decrees were motivated by his desire to protect the country's state institutions and transition to democratic rule against a "conspiracy" hatched by figures of the ousted regime of Hosni Mubarak.

Morsi, whose claims have been repeated by leaders of his Brotherhood, has yet to divulge details of the alleged conspiracy.
