YouTube?s Biggest Overhaul Of Its Data API Yet Adds Universal Search, Efficiency, And Lets 3rd Party Tools Post To Subscribers

Screen shot 2012-12-14 at 5.44.48 PMYouTube first launched its Data API back in 2007, and it has since become the video giant's most popular API in terms of request volume. Today, YouTube announced that it has officially opened version 3.0 of its API to all developers. The new APIs bring a number of important changes to bear on its current feature set, including client library support, improved tooling, reference documentation and integration with Google's API infrastructure. It's also now officially using JSON instead of XML encoding for, as YouTube says, "greater efficiency" and now only returns what you ask for.

Baby Names Ripped From The Headlines In 2012

By Pamela Redmond Satran and Linda Rosenkrantz for Nameberry

The most notable names of 2012 have taken a colorful direction this year, with international influences that range from presidents to K-pop to celebrities and the characters they play, and from the web to the weather.

Our picks for the 12 names most emblematic of 2012 -? plus the dozen also-rans -? are:

  • Malala

Runnerup: Dilma Malala Yousufzai, the Pakistani 14-year-old who was gunned down by the Taliban for championing girls? education, wrote that her melodious name means ?grief stricken.? Malala could well become an inspiration name choice for young girls in the Western World. Another female name to emerge from world politics this year is Dilma, via Brazil?s first woman president Dilma Rousseff, who was named after her mother.

  • Lincoln

Runnerup: Abraham Daniel Day Lewis?s brilliant film portrayal brought Abraham Lincoln alive in a way he hasn?t been since, well, 1863. As a modern hero name, our first choice is the fresh-sounding Lincoln, once heard as a first name in The Mod Squad as the proper name for the cool character called Linc. Abraham relates more to the brethren of gray-bearded Old Testament names ?- Noah, Moses, Isaiah -? than to our arguably greatest president, but that still puts it in step with our times.

  • London

Runnerup: Jubilee London takes the title of the place name of the year, given the Olympics and the Queen?s Jubilee (more on that in a moment) as well as Prince Harry?s antics and the ongoing royal bump watch. The name London leapt into the Top 100 for girls this year and we see the city?s stature elevating it even higher; while London is sagging a bit as a boy?s name, it?s not out of the running. Runnerup name Jubilee is a celebratory new word name heard increasingly for girls.

  • Penelope

Runnerup: Sophia The ancient Greek name Penelope became an unlikely reality star this year when Kourtney Kardashian chose it for her high-profile newborn. Meaning ?weaver,? the name of Odysseus?s long-faithful wife was also placed in the limelight by Spanish star Pen?lope Cruz. Runnerup Greek sister Sophia makes our list because she became the Number 1 girls? name in the U.S. this year, only the 16th name to take first place honors since 1880.

  • Grey

Runnerup: Junot There aren?t many baby name inspirations less likely than the erotic "50 Shades of Grey" blockbusters, but parents are indeed naming their children Grey -? and Gray and Grayer and Grayson, the only one of the series to make the Top 1000. On the more literary end of literary inspiration, we nominate author Junot Diaz, this year?s Pulitzer novelist whose name is the Spanish variation of the Latin Junius, which means ?born in June.?

  • Lena

Runnerup: Jemima Impresario Lena Dunham took HBO by storm with her series "Girls," a "Sex & the City" for a new generation of women. The name Lena, adhering to the Hundred Year Rule, was in the Top 100 from 1880 until 1920. Originally a short form for Helena or any other name that ended in those four letters, Lena can now stand on its own and is headed back toward the top. Fellow series star Jemima Kirke makes her British-accented first name US-appropriate.

  • Brody

Runnerup: Damian The lead male character on Showtime?s smash "Homeland" bears the handsome hero name Nicholas, but he?s always called by his surname Brody, emblematic of our times and our naming tastes. Brody is an Irish surname that means ?ditch? and is in the Top 100. Charismatic actor Damian Lewis, who portrays the character, may help promote his upper class British name to Americans.

  • Sandy

Runnerup: Athena The mild-mannered Sandy was anything but as the superstorm that swamped the northeast in October 2012. While the name may be still stuck in the Sandra Dee-Sandy Koufax 1960s, Sandy now joins Katrina in the pantheon of bad-by-association names. Followup storm Athena was the first of the non-hurricanes named for a mythological figure by The Weather Channel.

  • Arya

Runnerup: Aria "Game of Thrones" was one of year?s breakout series and Arya was its breakout baby name, the appellation of a sword-wielding young heroine. Musical twin name Aria, which stars in television?s "Pretty Little Liars," has been zooming up the popularity charts by hundreds of points a year.

  • S?v?rine

Runnerup: B?r?nice The sensationally successful new Bond movie, "Skyfall," introduced a sensationally gorgeous new Bond girl, and with it her sleek, sophisticated French name. The charismatic character was played by B?r?nice Marlohe, (yet another possible spelling of Marlow/Marlowe?) who, coincidentally, shares her Gallic first name with last year?s Oscar nominee B?r?nice Bejo, the female lead of "The Artist."

  • Adele

Runnersup: Florence and Estelle No, these are not the names of the ladies in your Grandma?s canasta group, but all three belong to hot young singers (average age 28). And each of them has been influential in the renewed interest in her name?s use for babies -- in particular Adele, which rose 282 points on the popularity charts in the last year.

  • Psy

Runnerup: Gangnam Notorious as well as notable, PSY (pronounced sigh) is the South Korean rapper/songwriter/ dancer (born Bak Jae-sang), whose infectious international hit single ?Gangnam Style? now holds the record for being the most accessed YouTube video of all time, generating close to a billion views.

Phillip Island Circuit revamped at an expense of $3 million ? MotoGP news

Located near Melbourne, the 4.445 km asphalt surface of Phillip Island Circuit underwent major refurbishment during this week.

It has been 14 years since the circuit was last revamped back in 1998.

Over 5,000 tonnes of asphalt was laid across the full length of the track which cost around $3 million. 70 personnel took part in the onsite resurface work. They had a fleet of construction equipment at their disposal. At turns 1 and 4 of the track, new asphalt run offs were installed. New barriers were setup and 1.3 kilometres of kerbing was removed and replaced as well.

It was not only the track which was resurfaced. Work was also done on the infrastructure of the circuit. New surface was laid on the paddock. Scrutineer?s area, fuel compound and Expo and Visitor Centre were also resurfaced.

Phillip Island hosts more than 7 major events throughout the year. These include Australian Grand Prix, Superbike World Championship, Australian Manufacturers' Championship, Australian Touring Car Championship and Australian Drivers' Championship. According to Managing Director Fergus Cameron the track is used over 300 days a year. 14 years from the old track was a good enough time according to Cameron. It was about time that the track got a revamp.

Cameron says,??The stresses and strains of Casey Stoner on a MotoGP bike or the World Superbike riders going around this place at over 330 km/h all take their toll. And then there?s Lowndes and WhinCup and their rivals ripping round the track in the V8 Supercars, plus loads of other events, ride days and test days. The track had served us very well and it was about time to give it a makeover.?

Now that the renovation is complete, the quickest MotoGP circuit is bound to get even faster following the work that has been done on the track.

This is what Andrew Fox of circuit owners Linfox Property Group had to say about the new track. ?This [new] surface is as smooth as a baby's bum, and I've got five kids, so I know!?

The next major event scheduled to be hosted at Phillip Island Circuit is the Superbike World Championship and it starts on February 24, 2013. With more than 2 month to go in the next major event, maintenance personnel have just about the right amount of time at their disposal to hone the track.

It is expected that MotoGP fans will get to witness quicker races in Phillip Island. Anticipation is of old records being challenged and new ones being formed. Casey Stoner, the home star, who also holds the record of six successive Australian Grand Prix wins at Phillip Island, although retired from his MotoGP career, may be seen racing V8 Supercars here.

Anarchy for children? A pro-anarchy kids' book angers the Tea Party

'A Rule is to Break: A Child's Guide to Anarchy,' by John Seven and Jana Christy, was called 'downright shocking' by a Tea Party publication and received a blurb from activist Bill Ayers.

Children?s books seem to be the center of controversy lately. First there was the 9/11 coloring book that depicted scenes from 9/11 and the killing of Osama bin Laden. Then there was ?Maggie Goes on a Diet,? which encouraged young girls to diet.

This latest divisive children?s book has the Tea Party, Bill Ayers, and even President Obama ensnared in its controversial crosshairs.

?A Rule is to Break: A Child?s Guide to Anarchy,? by husband-and-wife team John Seven and Jana Christy, has some readers up in arms, with one Tea Party publication calling its publication ?downright shocking.?

Published by Manic D, a small San Francisco press specializing in anarchist and fringe publications including ?The Civil Disobedience Handbook,? and ?The International Homosexual Conspiracy,? this 44-page picture book for children ages 4 and up is the press?s first foray into children?s book publishing, according to Publisher?s Weekly.

Its colorfully-illustrated pages contain such advice as ?Don?t look like everybody else! Be you,? ?Think for Yourself!? ?No Baths Ever Again!? and ?Give Away Stuff for Free,? along with the more eyebrow-raising ?When Someone Says, ?Work!? You Say Why?? and ?Do What You Want!...Or do nothing, if you prefer.?

And while some see it as ?gently humorous,? like the UK?s Guardian, and showing ?the softer side of anarchy, with an emphasis on fun and independence, but also community and kindness,? like Publishers Weekly, others aren?t so amused.

A report in the Tea Party publication Liberty News Network calls the book ?horrendous? and ?downright shocking.?

?But it gets even worse,? continues the write-up, ?when we realize Bill Ayers, radical terrorist leftist and friend of Obama, not only endorsed it through his twitter account, his comments in support of the book are listed on the actual Amazon.com book page? Wow... If a person can be read by the company he keeps, what does this say about Obama??

In his blurb, Ayers calls the book ?a delight to read? and says that ?a children?s book on anarchy seems somehow just right: an instinctive, intuitive sense of fairness, community, and interdependence sits naturally enough with a desire for participatory democracy, feminism, queer-rights, environmental balance, self-determination, and peace and global justice.? Beneath the blurb, Ayers is identified with a wink and a nod, as an ?author? teacher, Barack Obama?s alleged terrorist pal, and grandpa.??

Not surprisingly, publisher Manic D approached this firestorm with a sense of humor and doesn?t seem bothered by the attacks. Sales are ?pretty good,? marketing manager Jennifer Swihart Voegele told Publishers Weekly, and the controversy will likely only drum up more interest and sales. Incidentally, Manic D also sent early Christmas presents to rightwing pundit Bill O?Reilly and comedian Stephen Colbert: copies of the book with a ?Happy holidays? card.
