U.N. nuclear chief Amano has no rivals for new term

VIENNA (Reuters) - U.N. nuclear chief Yukiya Amano, a key figure in international diplomacy on Iran's disputed nuclear work, is set to win another four-year term as he faces no rivals for the post.

A letter from the chairman of the 35-nation governing board of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to member states of the U.N. agency, dated January 7, said no other candidates had come forward by a December 31 deadline.

It means Amano, who has taken a tougher approach on the Iran nuclear file than his predecessor Mohamed ElBaradei, will almost certainly be reappointed as director general without problems, in contrast to his close election victory in 2009.

"I wish to inform you that I have received no nominations and that, consequently, Mr Amano is the only candidate," said the letter from Canadian envoy John Barrett, seen by Reuters.

Barrett indicated that he aimed for a formal decision to reappoint Amano, a veteran Japanese diplomat, at the board's next meeting in early March.

Western diplomats are generally happy with the way he has stepped up pressure on Iran to stop stonewalling an agency investigation into suspected atom bomb research, even if that push has yet to bear fruit.

But the Vienna-based U.N. watchdog's relations with Tehran, which denies Western accusations that it is seeking to develop the capability to produce nuclear weapons, have become increasingly strained since Amano took office on December 1, 2009.

Under Amano, the IAEA was criticized in 2011 for a perceived slow initial response to Japan's Fukushima nuclear disaster, but later led international efforts to agree an action plan to improve global reactor safety.

In 2009, supported largely by industrialized nations, Amano defeated South Africa's Abdul Samad Minty in a sixth round of balloting after five inconclusive votes.

No show for Depardieu in drunk driving charges

PARIS (AP) ? French actor Gerard Depardieu will not show up at a Paris court Tuesday to face drunken driving charges because he has clashing professional commitments abroad, his lawyer said Tuesday.

Depardieu's lawyer Eric de Caumont said his client was not trying to dodge French justice, but is abroad "meeting the producers of a movie," whose filming in New York will begin in January.

Caumont suggested on BFM-TV that the movie in question will see Depardieu play the disgraced former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn.

The 64-year-old star of films such as "Green Card" and "Cyrano de Bergerac" was picked up last November by police after he fell off his scooter in northwest Paris.

The drunken driving hearing will now be deferred to a criminal court, and he could lose his driving license and could face up to two years in jail, Caumont said.

Depardieu has caused controversy in recent weeks for other reasons. On Saturday he received a Russian passport from President Vladimir Putin, after threatening to return his French passport after Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault called him "pathetic" for deciding to move to tax-friendly Belgium.

In a much publicized letter in December, Depardieu also made reference to his headline-grabbing lifestyle: "I won't cast a stone at (people) who have cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes or too much alcohol or those who fall asleep on their scooter: I am one of them, as you dear media outlets like so much to repeat."

Back in 1998, Depardieu also crashed his motorcycle when his blood-alcohol limit was five times over the legal limit, escaping with leg and face injuries.

AIG may join bailout lawsuit against U.S. government

NEW YORK/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - American International Group Inc, the insurer rescued by the U.S. government in 2008 with a bailout that ultimately totaled $182 billion, may now join a lawsuit against the government alleging the terms of the deal were unfair, the company said on Tuesday.

Negative reaction was swift. A leading congressional Democrat called criticism of the deal's terms "utterly ridiculous," and former New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer - who probed AIG when he was in office - called the prospect of a suit "insulting to the public."

The move would be something of a shock, given that AIG just launched a high-profile television ad campaign called "Thank you, America," in which it offers the public its gratitude for the bailout. On Tuesday, the company promoted the ads again on Twitter, even as it came under fire over the lawsuit.

AIG said its board would meet Wednesday to discuss joining a lawsuit filed against the government by the insurer's former chief executive, Maurice "Hank" Greenberg.

Greenberg, whose Starr International owned 12 percent of AIG before its near-collapse, has accused the New York Fed of using the rescue to bail out Wall Street banks at the expense of shareholders, and of being a "loan shark" by charging exorbitant interest of 14.5 percent on the initial loan.

"If AIG enters this suit it would be the equivalent of a patient suing their doctor for saving their life," said Mark Williams, a former Federal Reserve bank examiner who teaches in the finance department at Boston University.

'CHOICE WAS BANKRUPTCY'

A federal judge in Manhattan dismissed one of Greenberg's suits in November; it is being appealed.

A separate suit under different legal theories is still pending in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims in Washington.

In his ruling dated November 19, Judge Paul Engelmayer said AIG had notified the court it would hold a board meeting January 9 to discuss joining one of the suits, with a decision expected by the end of the month.

In a mid-December hearing in the Washington case, a lawyer for AIG told the court that all sides had already made three written submissions to the board and that the board would spend half the day on January 9 discussing the suit.

An AIG spokesman declined to comment beyond confirming that the board would meet as planned. The deliberations were first reported by the New York Times.

The New York Fed said Tuesday there was no merit to any allegations that the bank harmed AIG.

"AIG's board of directors had an alternative choice to borrowing from the Federal Reserve and that choice was bankruptcy. Bankruptcy would have left all AIG shareholders with worthless stock," a representative of the bank said Tuesday.

Elijah Cummings, the ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, also said the company had a choice in 2008 and picked what it considered the better option.

"The idea that AIG might sue the government is an unbelievable insult to our nation's taxpayers, who cleaned up the mess this firm created," he said in a statement.

Cummings' former colleague, the recently-retired Barney Frank, said he was "stunned" by the news and added that AIG was a fully willing participant in the rescue.

"There was not the hint of a suggestion of any coercion. They did this very voluntarily, very gratefully. And if the company were now to go around and join this lawsuit, that would be outrageous," Frank said in an interview.

The U.S. Treasury declined to comment. It completed its final sale of AIG stock in mid-December, concluding the bailout with what Treasury called a positive return of $22.7 billion.

AIG shares fell 1.2 percent to $35.49 in afternoon trade. After losing half its value in 2011, the stock rose more than 52 percent in 2012, tripling the gains of the broader S&P insurance index.

GREENBERG ROLLS ON

If AIG decides to join Greenberg's suit, it would be another legal victory for the man who once ran the world's largest insurance company but was ultimately forced to leave under a cloud of scandal.

On Monday, a federal judge ruled that New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman does not have standing to object to a $115 million settlement between AIG shareholders and the former chief executive. Schneiderman wanted the deal rejected.

The judge's ruling apparently clears the way for approval of the deal, whose broad releases would preclude New York from pursuing its high-profile 2005 fraud case against Greenberg, according to court papers.

The state case, brought by Spitzer, accuses Greenberg and former Chief Financial Officer Howard Smith of using sham transactions to mask the company's financial position.

The claims, which Greenberg and Smith have fought through three New York attorneys general, await an appeal at the state's highest court.

Wrist and Hand Conerns: Carpal Tunnel and Compression ...

If you are suffering from numb hands and shooting aches on your palms, you might be suffering from compression of the nerve in your hands. The carpal canal is a passageway which makes it possible for tendons, nerves and joints to pass through and reach the hands.

Wrist troubles are frequently from the inflammation of this carpal tunnel area. Once the tendons found in this canal would swell or are inflammed, it will absolutely change the integrity of the median nerve. As soon as the tendons are inflamed, it could certainly squeeze or compress the median nerve. This would lead to uncomfortable signs and symptoms involving wrist movements and the sensation of your entire hand.

Basically, the carpal tunnel is made up of eight comparatively small bones known as carpal bones in the wrist. The retinaculum ligament is also found here. There are long flexor tendons which assists in movement of the wrists and hands. The space between the carpal bones and the ligaments is known as the carpal tunnel canal. The median nerve goes through this area which divides into various branches to innervate the palms.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a problem which is classified as a compression neuropathy of the median nerve. The median nerve permits sensation of the middle, thumb and index finger. The movements of the muscles beneath the thumb is under the control of the median nerve. This carpal tunnel issue will certainly cause a great deal of painful symptoms in the hand and wrist.

Though carpal tunnel syndrome can occur at various age groups, those who are 40-50 years old are more susceptible for obtaining this wrist problem. This is also most frequent among women who are pregnant and diabetics. Furthermore, women are more inclined to experience problems related to the compression of the median nerve.

The symptoms of compression neuropathy of the median nerve:

* The sensation of needles and pins pricking on the hand. That has a burning or tingling area of the fingers and wrists.

* Pain on the fingers particularly the middle and index fingers. Shooting pain anywhere up to the forearm

* Weakness of the entire fingers and muscles of the wrists and hands might worsen. Thereby lessening grip strength.

Carpal tunnel is one condition which can be prevented. You have to learn how to deal with your symptoms. Master basic stretching exercises to prevent the appearance of this type of injury.

Margaret Paul, Ph.D.: 6 Reasons to Make Kindness Your Highest Priority

"I'm not a smart man but I know what love is." -- Forrest Gump

When I was in school, kindness never seemed to be valued by the teachers. What was valued were grades -- being smart. Obviously today, with the rampant prevalence of bullying, being kind still doesn't have a high priority. So many other things seem to have far more value -- being powerful and in control, being famous, being brilliant, being rich and successful. Whether on the school playground or in business or government, being smart and in control is given a higher value than caring and kindness. In fact, being a caring and kind person seems to have acquired a bad rap:

    • If I'm kind, I will be duped and taken advantage of.
    • If I'm kind, people will see me as weak and not respect me.

Why is kindness linked with weakness? Is it possible to be kind as well as smart, successful and powerful? Are they mutually exclusive?

Of course, the answer to the last question is "no" -- these qualities are not mutually exclusive at all. Let's see why.

    1. Happiness, Joy and Inner Fullness

One of my favorite movies, which we see every Christmas Eve, is A Christmas Carol with Alastair Sim -- who does an incredible job of playing Ebenezer Scrooge. For most of the movie, he is a power-hungry rich miser who cares for no one. Once the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future show him what he has been denying, he changes from being a totally miserable, empty man to being a light and joyous man, filled to the brim with loving kindness. I am always thrilled to see the moment of his redemption!

Kindness to ourselves and with others takes away emptiness, replacing it with the fullness of love, inner peace and a sense of personal power.

    2. Personal Power -- Power Within Versus Power Over

Just because Scrooge became kind rather than miserly and controlling, doesn't mean he became weak. In fact, he became filled with personal power -- the power that comes from truly valuing oneself. We value our intrinsic selves when we are kind and caring. When we are mean, controlling, miserly and always having to win and be right, we create an inner emptiness that leads to a lack of self-worth.

Gary, one of my clients, is a very smart and financially successful man. His millions give him a lot of power over others and over situations. Gary lives in a big house, drives expensive cars, and has a beautiful wife and three lovely children. Yet Gary often feels anxious and empty inside. He lives in fear of being rejected and taken advantage of. Gary tries to protect himself from what he fears by being harsh and judgmental toward himself and others -- his way of maintaining power and control. With all his millions, Gary consistently experiences low self-worth, which is the consequence of his harsh self-judgment.

Being kind scares Gary. He is certain that if he is kind to others, they will think less of him. But the result of his lack of kindness is that he has very few friends.

The problem lies in the fact that Gary has never learned to be kind to himself. It is his harsh self-judgments that make him inwardly weak and afraid of being used and rejected. His self-judgments create his feelings of never being good enough, so he has to achieve more, make more money and appear smarter to appease the anxiety and emptiness that result from his self-judgments. Gary is constantly trying to have power over others because he actually has no personal power.

Personal power is the result of knowing and valuing your intrinsic qualities -- your caring and compassion, your unique forms of intelligence, your unique forms of creativity. Personal power is the result of knowing that you are a good person -- that you are worth loving. We achieve personal power when we learn how to take loving care of ourselves and share our love with others, and when we can stay centered and connected within even in the face of others' unloving, rejecting behavior.

We are weak when we think so little of ourselves that we allow others to use and abuse us. We are powerful when we have the courage to take kind, loving action in our own behalf and in behalf of others, which includes being so inwardly centered that we no longer allow others' beliefs and behavior toward us to define our worth. There is no way we can achieve this level of personal power without kindness toward ourselves and others. No matter how smart and successful you are, if you are unkind to yourself and others, you may continue to feel empty and anxious within. You may never feel consistently full of love and joy within until you make kindness toward yourself and others your highest priority.

Are you afraid to do this? You might want to explore your false beliefs about kindness, and where you got these beliefs. You cannot feel full within and personally powerful as long as your fears of being weak and taken advantage of control your life. We cannot be personally powerful and come from fear at the same time. We are personally powerful when being kind is more important than what others think of us -- more important than being seen as smart, more important than having power over others, more important than huge wealth, more important than being right.

    3. Loving Relationships

Having counseled couples for 44 years, I know that kindness -- not money, fame, controlling behavior, being right or being smart -- is an essential ingredient in creating loving relationships.

However, it's very important to understand that it's not just kindness to others that creates loving relationships. First and foremost, you need to learn to be kind and caring toward yourself. If you are kind to others but harsh and judgmental toward yourself, you are emotionally abandoning yourself, which is the single most prevalent cause of relationship failure.

    4. Kindness is a Powerful Route to Success

In the excellent book, Good To Great, the author Jim Collins presents his research on major companies that went from good to great, as well as research on companies that never became great. He was surprised to find that much of the success of the great companies had to do with the CEOs' kindness and caring.[1] He wrote about the steel giant, Nucor:

Executives did not receive better benefits than frontline workers. In fact, executives had fewer perks. For example, all workers (but not executives) were eligible to receive $2,000 per year for each child for up to four years of post-high school education. In one incident, a man came to [Nucor Executive] Marvin Pohlman and said, "I have nine kids. Are you telling me that you'll pay for four years of school -- college, trade school, whatever -- for every single one of my kids?" Pohlman acknowledged that, yes, that's exactly what would happen. 'The man just sat there and cried,' said Pohlman. "I'll never forget it. It just captures in one moment so much of what we were trying to do."

    5. Impact on the World

Just as violence often breeds more violence, kindness often leads to more kindness. Individuals such as Mother Teresa and Gandhi have had a huge impact on the world with their kindness. Each one of us has the opportunity to impact many people with our kindness toward ourselves and others.

    6. Connection With Spirit

It is my experience, in working with thousands of people over these many years, that those who learn to be kind to themselves and others have an easy time accessing their spiritual guidance -- whatever this is for them. Whether they experience it as God, energy, inner wisdom, intuition, higher self, universal intelligence -- they have an easy time experiencing their higher source of wisdom, love and guidance.

The six reasons above show how kindness and love have a positive effect on all areas of our lives. But it doesn't stop there. I believe that when we die our soul does not die, but leaves our body and goes back to the spiritual realm. I believe that we are asked one question: "How kind were you -- how well did you love?" We are not asked how much money we made, how big our house was, how famous we were, or how many people admired us.

How would you answer this question today?

Cameron and Clegg pledges no split before 2015 vote

LONDON (Reuters) - The leaders of Britain's governing coalition parties put on a show of unity on Monday, saying they would stay together until 2015 to try to reduce a large budget deficit despite policy differences over the European Union and state handouts.

Under pressure from supporters to reassert their own party identities, Prime Minister David Cameron, a Conservative, and Nick Clegg, his deputy and a Liberal Democrat, appeared together to list their past achievements and future aims.

Both poured cold water on the idea that policy differences over the possibility of repatriating powers from the EU, and over the pace and severity of budget cuts, had undermined their alliance or might one day rip it apart.

"This is a full five-year coalition. The public wants us to work hard on their behalf right through this parliament," Cameron said at a joint news conference with Clegg.

Ratings agencies and Britain's creditors have until now given the government's flagship austerity programme time to work, but are monitoring the coalition closely for any sign it may falter in its commitments, get bogged down in internal bickering.

Clegg said the choice when they formed an alliance in 2010 had been to either "throw rocks at each other .... when we were teetering on the edge of an economic cliff" or to work together.

"What you rightly expect is for politicians to set aside their differences and just get on with the job," Clegg said.

With both parties badly trailing the opposition Labour party in opinion polls, supporters are calling for them to begin to disengage from one another ahead of an election in 2015 to boost their electoral prospects.

The left-leaning Liberal Democrats have seen their popularity slump due to policy compromises, while many Conservative lawmakers see the Lib Dems as a brake on the party's ambitions.

Presenting what they branded as a mid-term "stock take" two and a half years into their coalition, Cameron and Clegg listed the coalition's achievements to date.

These included cutting the budget deficit by a quarter, boosting private sector jobs, removing income tax from the lowest-paid and freezing local council and fuel duties, they said.

However, their main aim of staging a stable economic recovery from the 2008 financial crisis has remained elusive. Economic growth remains anaemic and support for both parties has ebbed as voters' incomes have been squeezed.

    LABOUR CRITICISM

Outside the news conference at Cameron's Downing Street residence, Labour activists distributed a spoof government publication labelled "A programme for no change" with the sub-heading "Out of touch, unfair, incompetent".

"Their true record is one of failure. They failed on growth and jobs," the document said.

In the coming two and half years, Clegg and Cameron promised to limit the amount the elderly pay for long-term healthcare, reform state pensions, build more houses, help parents with childcare costs and find ways to boost investment in transport.

One factor keeping the coalition together is the prospect of electoral annihilation for the Lib Dems if they force an early election, given their current low poll ratings.

Cameron's stance on Europe could further strain ties, with the prime minister expected to make a key speech on Britain's relationship with the EU this month.

Cameron is under pressure to appease his increasingly eurosceptic Conservative colleagues' desire for looser ties with the bloc but must also be careful not to alienate his pro-Europe Lib Dem partners.

Asked about the pair's differences on Europe, Clegg said both leaders agreed on the need to reduce the EU's budget and on the need for EU reform.
