RIM is taking two BlackBerry 10 beta units on tour soon for carrier previews

As the world awaits the arrival of BlackBerry 10 hardware, the Wall Street Journal has a report from RIM CEO Thorsten Heins that the company is ready to start showing off the "nearly complete" devices to carriers next week. Separately, CrackBerry has heard the same from its sources, along with word that more internal employees are becoming a part of the beta test group (already plugging away since May on alpha dev units like the one shown above) as well. As RIM is preparing to ramp up production of test devices, the CEO was also ready to confirm more details about the hardware, including that two devices are due at launch -- one all-touchscreen and one QWERTY / touchscreen combo -- with plans to expand to six models evenly split between the two options, and that it will stick with removable batteries.

Before RIM tries to convince end users early next year that its new OS was worth the wait, it will have to persuade potential carrier partners. Fortunately, if you believe one unnamed WSJ source, it's already showing a "marked improvement" over existing phones that makes BlackBerry more competitive with Android. We're not sure if that will keep BBM addicts on the hook until new hardware launches, but with the roadshow about to commence we should hear more concrete details soon.

New test may speed detection of heart attacks - Harvard Health ...

A heart attack (more formally known as myocardial infarction) isn?t always an instantly recognizable event. Severe chest pain often has nothing to do with the heart or blood vessels. Some heart attacks are so small they pass almost unnoticed, written off as indigestion or the flu. Others are major catastrophes, causing death or long-lasting disability.

A new blood test may help speed the diagnosis. This is important, because the sooner a heart attack is diagnosed, the sooner treatment can begin. The sooner treatment begins, the more heart muscle can be saved.

Fifty years ago, doctors had to rely on a person?s symptoms and sometimes hard-to-interpret changes on an electrocardiogram to determine if a heart attack was under way. Today, blood tests are available that can detect the chemical signature of dying heart cells. The blood test preferred today is called troponin. Troponin is a protein complex found almost exclusively in heart and skeletal muscle cells. Its sudden release into the bloodstream signals damage to the heart muscle. Combining troponin results with characteristic changes on the electrocardiogram and symptoms is currently the gold standard for identifying myocardial infarction.

Within the first few hours of a heart attack, though, both the troponin level and the electrocardiogram can be normal. That means people with results in the gray zone are observed and monitored for 12 to 16 hours with more troponin tests and electrocardiograms.

The new high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T test can detect smaller amounts of troponin in the bloodstream. This could let doctors identify small heart attacks that would otherwise go undiagnosed, or identify heart attacks earlier?and begin treatment earlier. Results of a study of the test, published online this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine, showed that it helped emergency room doctors rule out heart attack in just a couple hours.

Skip the home diagnosis

While it is important for doctors to quickly tell the difference between a heart attack and something else, like pancreatitis or a panic attack, it?s even more important for people with chest pain to get to the hospital as soon as possible, and not try to make a diagnosis themselves. Far too many people delay calling 911 or going to the hospital, and by the time they do a substantial section of heart muscle has died.

When it comes to chest pain, it?s better to be safe than sorry. (For more information on chest pain and heart attacks, I recommend that you read this article from the Harvard Heart Letter.) Keep in mind that chest pain is only one of the possible signs of an impending heart attack. Call 911 or your local emergency number right away if you have:

  • Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, burning, tightness or pain in the center of the chest
  • Pain, numbness, pinching, prickling or other uncomfortable sensations in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sudden nausea or vomiting
  • Lightheadedness or dizziness
  • Unusual fatigue, especially if accompanied with a great deal of sweating
  • Sudden heaviness, weakness or aching in one or both arms

The PR Industry Is Doing Just Fine, Thanks! - PRNewser

By Patrick Coffee on August 13, 2012 3:56 PM

What recession? Today in Always Look on the Bright Side news (thanks to Eric Idle): Despite a US economy that can?t seem to find its way out of the rabbit hole, the PR business is doing quite well, if we do say so ourselves.

While we can?t quite back up Everything PR?s prediction that the industry ?may well be the barometer of hope many people are looking for,? revenues are clearly rising in 2012 with no slowdown in sight.

What changed? Well, after five years of declining recession-era budgets, businesses and public figures seem to have rediscovered their favorite hobby: spending lots of money to make themselves look good! In case you haven?t heard, corporate profits have emerged from the downturn in excellent health despite the fact that millions of Americans continue to struggle. It?s really common sense: An era producing record-low levels of trust in government, media and big business entities makes PR services more valuable than ever.

Now that you?ve got money to burn, you can pay for the full report here.

Three Mango Seeds: Branson Landing

I wanted to share a little about our weekend trip we took a couple weekends ago. ?Our family really enjoys going to Branson, MO. ?It's a relatively short drive from where we live so it's just far enough away to feel "gone" but close enough that it's an easy weekender, it also doesn't hurt that a friend of ours owns a condo there!

Here's a picture of the backside of the condo's...

They are located right next to the Payne Stewart Golf Course and are really lovely! ?It's never crowded and we normally have the pool all to ourselves. ?It's a great place to just hang out as a family and recharge.

This time we visited the HOLLYWOOD WAX MUSEUM and surprisingly it was really fun! ?We got some great pics of the kids hanging with their celebrity friends however those are my phone and for some reason it's being a jerk by not allowing me to share them!

We love to go to the downtown area and explore the antique shops & BRANSON LANDING. ?One of our favorite places that is a must go to each time is Dick's 5 and Dime. ?You would not believe all the stuff jammed into this place! ?Our kids really have a field day in there! ?Although, you'll need more than a dime if you want to buy something! Ha! ?

We've never really taken the time to wait around for the water, light & fire show at the Fountains. ?We did this year and it was awesome! ?It was so hot that the mist from the water cannons really cooled us off! ?On our next visit we're going to make sure to visit the Fountains at night, we were told that was something we shouldn't miss. ?I'm not a great videographer but here's a short clip of what it was like... Can you imagine how awesome that must be a night?! ?Just watching our video's makes me ready to go back already! ?I can't believe we are right around the corner from school starting back again. ?Summer has flown by this year for us. ?What about you?

Actress Kelli Kirkland Gives Us the Dish on Motherhood and Healthy ...

Kelli Kirkland wears many hate; actress, mom, multi-tasker but even the greatest superhero had her downfall. Kirkland admits that her kryptonite?was her cooking. After joining the cast of Worst Cooks in America, she learned to battle that unhealthy demon.?

SM: What inspired you to join the Food Networks? Worst Cooks in America team for their 3rd season?

KK: ?The desire to feed my son good, healthy food was the impetus for me applying to Worst Cooks.?

SM: What kind of tricks/tips did you learn in the kitchen throughout your stay on the show?

KK: ?The 3 best tips I learned during my Worst Cooks experience were 1) Taste your food numerous times throughout the cooking process. If you taste while you cook you can correct mistakes, but once it?s done it?s too late. 2) Use fresh ingredients, herbs and spices whenever possible to get the best flavor imaginable. ?Fresh is best! 3) Don?t be afraid to try something new. Experimenting is the only way you?ll ever improve.?

SM: How has your experience on the show changed your at-home work in the kitchen?

KK: ?No one frowns or cries when I say ?dinner?s ready?!?

SM: As a mother, please provide our busy moms with tips on how to make healthy, balanced meals for a family with little time to prepare.

KK: ?My #1 tip is the crock pot! No oil, no hassle, no mess. You can put tons of healthy ingredients in the crock pot before you get the kids off to school in the morning and by the time you get home dinner is ready! It just doesn?t get any easier than that. ?So invest in a crock pot ($45 or less) and look online for awesome slow cooker recipes.?

SM:?How do you stay healthy throughout the week? Do you prepare food? Do you follow a certain diet plan?

KK: ?I stay healthy by planning my meals for the week ahead of time and only buying healthy snacks. If chips and cake are in the house I will eat them, but if I only have fruit, veggies and whole grain healthy snacks that?s what I?ll eat. You have to think ahead to stay in shape!?

SM: What is your favorite recipe to bring to parties/events?

KK: ?Brie with apricot jam, candied walnuts and craisins wrapped in a crescent rolls and baked. This is a treat (definitely not for when I?m watching my weight), but it?s super easy and is always a crowd please. My friend Dana gave me the recipe and I will love her forever for it!?

SM: If you could indulge in one meal as often as you wanted, regardless of the nutrition, what would it be?

KK: ?BBQ baby back ribs. My guilty pleasure!?

SM: If you could cook with any celebrity, dead or alive, who would it be?

KK: ?I would cook with Pat and Gina Neely. They sure know how to cook and seem like they?re having a ball while doing it!?

SM: What is one appliance in your kitchen that makes your life that much easier?

KK: ?My crock pot, I couldn?t live without it.?

SM: Could you please provide us with 1-2 skinny recipes in any of the following categories: Skinny Meals, Skinny Snacks, Skinny Sides, Skinny Apps, Skinny Desserts, or Skinny Drinks.

Lemon & Garlic Kale Cups with heirloom tomatoes.

?Lightly saut? 1 pound of chopped kale in garlic flavored olive oil, add in 3-4 cloves of freshly crushed garlic and 15 heirloom tomatoes that have been cut in half, add kosher or sea salt and pepper to taste. Dress with juice from half of a freshly squeezed lemon. Remove from heat and serve?in small bowls or ramekins.?This makes for a colorful, delicious and healthy appetizer at any party.?

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) ? LSU coach Les Miles on Tuesday declined to close the door completely on the possibility, however remote, of Tyrann Mathieu playing football for the Tigers in 2013.

"Tyrann can be a student at LSU," Miles said after practice, adding that he is "not in any way speculating" about whether Mathieu could conceivably play for the Tigers again. "He will not be on this football team this year ? I guarantee that's a fact. So I have no idea beyond that."

Miles indicated he was ready to put his emphasis back on preparing the Tigers for the upcoming season. He stressed that it was time to be concerned about getting the Tigers ready for the season-opener against North Texas on Sept. 1.

However, questions kept coming about the dismissal of Mathieu, an All-America cornerback and 2011 Heisman Trophy finalist.

"I certainly am rooting for Tyrann and whatever his future is. But I'm not focused on that," Miles said. "I've got games to play and I've got 104 guys I have to be ready for. I know that this is a very key time in his life and I hope the decisions that he makes are in his best interest for the long-term. So we'll help in any way we can."

Mathieu was dismissed from the LSU team last Friday for what reportedly was the latest of several failed drug tests.

At that time, LSU Athletics Director Joe Alleva said that Mathieu lost his scholarship and was not expected to remain enrolled in school. Miles also said last Friday that he could not foresee Mathieu choosing to pay to remain at LSU this academic year and not play football when scholarships were awaiting him at other schools.

If Mathieu joined a program at the FCS level, the second tier of Division I, he could play this season before becoming eligible for the 2013 NFL draft.

Mathieu has already visited McNeese State, an FCS school in Lake Charles, La., and is expected to make a decision by Wednesday.

Mathieu also has the option of sitting out this season and transferring to another FBS school. But under NCAA rules, LSU will retain the right to refuse to grant Mathieu's release if the coaching staff or administration does not approve of his choice.

"When schools call about Tyrann, I recommend him," Miles said. "He's a wonderful young man. I think he's a team player. I think he has improved in his maturity and that's kind of how I would speak about him ? that he deserves every opportunity. ... His decision as to where he would transfer is not necessarily going through me. We've done what needs to be done up to this point."

Military sexual assault is focus of YouTube series

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? The enormous obstacles and emotional torment that a female solider confronts in reporting a sexual assault in the military is the focus of the three-part Web series "Lauren" debuting Monday on YouTube's new channel WIGS, which focuses on drama for women.

Featuring "Flashdance" star Jennifer Beals and Troian Bellisario, "Lauren" gives a close-up look at the challenges women service members face in trying to find justice after being raped. It's a problem that military leaders have given unprecedented attention to this year.

The Defense Department has estimated that 86 percent of sexual assaults go unreported, an indication that some women are worried about the effect reporting an assault may have on their career and that they mistrust the military prosecution system. Nearly 3,200 sexual assaults were reported in the military last year.

Military leaders say sexual assault is not only dehumanizing to the victims but threatens operational readiness. The Pentagon has set up hotlines and has been trying to encourage service members to help victims. High-ranking Navy leaders have likened their campaign to the crusade years ago to stop rampant drug abuse, although activists say sweeping institutional changes are needed for victims to find justice.

Directed by Lesli Linka Glatter, "Lauren" sets out to show viewers how unfair and unsympathetic the military can be toward the abuse of female service members. At the same time, it depicts the turmoil of many of the victims ? who have a deep love and respect for the military but often feel betrayed after coming forward.

The series opens with an Army commanding officer ? Maj. Jo Stone, played by Beals ? scrutinizing a report made by a sergeant named Lauren about being raped by three fellow soldiers. Stone asks the young soldier if she ever considered a career as a fiction writer and then asks how many drinks she had the night of the "incident." She provides an ominous warning if she pursues her accusations.

"Even if the men are deemed guilty, they're likely to suffer a reprimand or a slight pay cut, nothing more," Stone tells the soldier. "But WHAT will happen to you may expose you to repercussions for your entire career."

After Monday's debut, the second and third episodes in the series will be available Wednesday and Friday.

Beals told The Associated Press her character's words may at first seem hurtful and harsh but later viewers realize it's more complex for the commanding officer, who herself has had to fight her way up through the ranks.

"Even though she seems so hard, there is one little flicker of humanity," Beals said, adding later: "You have to get to the end (of the series) before you realize what the real story is."

Bellisario said in an interview that she was drawn to the script because even though her father, "NCIS" and "JAG" producer Donald P. Bellisario, served in the Marine Corps, she was not aware of the institutional barriers in today's military that deter many female service members from reporting sexual assaults.

"The biggest problem when you're overseas and you're serving, is all you have is the guy or girl next to you and your commanding officer," Bellisario said. "If your commanding officer does not want to do it (report the rape), then you have nowhere else to go."

More than a dozen U.S. veterans who say they were raped or assaulted by comrades filed a class-action suit in federal court last year attempting to force the Pentagon to change how it handles such cases. The current and former service members ? 15 women and two men ? described circumstances in which servicemen allegedly got away with rape and other sexual abuse while their victims were ordered to continue to serve with them. In several cases, the aggressors continued to call them names and taunt them.

Bellisario hopes the series will help push efforts to prevent sexual assault and prosecute it to the full degree.

"My hope is people will see that this is not slandering this great institution but rather holding it up to a high standard and asking it to recognize there is an issue and that it should be addressed," she said. "It's not anti-military at all."

Anuradha Bhagwati is a former Marine Corps captain and executive director of the Service Women's Action Network, which advocates for such policy changes. She was allowed to preview the series and says it gives a realistic picture of what thousands of female service members face, especially its depiction of the retaliation and name calling victims often suffer.

According to Bhagwati's organization, the Defense Department's own statistics show that fewer than one in five of these cases are even referred for court martial. She says part of the problem is unit commanders are the judge and jury in these types of cases and there needs to be an impartial party involved. Too often, she adds, perpetrators are given nonjudicial punishments.

"One of the key things that the series brings up," Bhagwati said, "is this idea that you often don't get a fair shot within the military judicial system."

FTC considering new settlement process so companies can't deny wrongdoing

FTC considering new settlement process so companies can't deny wrongdoingGoogle recently paid the FTC $22.5 million and Facebook was ordered by the commission to change the way it handles data, but you might be surprised to hear that both companies did nothing wrong. Well, not exactly, but by settling their privacy violation cases, the internet giants are entitled to deny any misconduct. The New York Times reports that J. Thomas Rosch, a commissioner who voted against both settlements, feels that current rules will invite "denials of liability in every case in the future." Rosch wants the policy changed so companies can't deny responsibility when settling, much like the way the SEC handles similar indiscretions. Most of his colleagues weren't in a hurry to back his opinions, but three did say that refining the process could "avoid any possible public misimpression" of how the FTC strikes such deals. The commission is expected to look at the issue in the near future, but until then, we're sure you're more than able to separate the reality from the legalese.
