Mike Huckabee Slams The GOP For Their Unfair Treatment Of Todd Akin

video

Former Arkansas governor and radio personality, Mike Huckabee, appeared on Fox News Channel with Neil Cavuto on Friday to defend Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin. Huckabee said that the party is being unfair to the Missouri Congressman. He also said the GOP is squandering an opportunity to frame Akin?s comments as a battle over right to life issues, which he believes the party can win on as easily as they can on economic issues.

Huckabee said that Akin apologized for his remarks and he should be forgiven for them. He went on to say that, on abortion issues, the nation is closer to Akin?s position than then are to President Barack Obama and Akin?s opponent, Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO).

Huckabee went on to say that it?s difficult to ask a candidate who has spent the past two years fighting to win a primary to drop out right after victory.

?Do you think the party has been unfair to him,? asked Cavuto.

?I do,? replied Huckabee. ?This can be a teachable moment. It?s not that this is unrecoverable.? He advised the party to make abortion issues a central point in the Missouri Senate race.

?She doesn?t want him to drop out,? interrupted Cavuto.

?I?m sure she doesn?t,? said Huckabee. ?She didn?t want him, probably you know, to drop in.?

Cavuto asked Huckabee for his opinion on how the social conservative movement was dealing with the way in which conservative pundits and lawmakers alike have turned on Akin and publicly sought his withdrawal from the Missouri Senate race.

?I think there?s great disappointment because there was such a chorus ? an orchestrated chorus that went after him,? said Huckabee. ?This was a public humiliation. And I think it created a real conflict.?

Huckabee said that the GOP could have taken the opportunity that Akin?s comments presented to create a contrast between the Republican party and the Democrats on the issue of life. Cavuto challenged that Akin?s comments did not present the GOP with any opportunities.

?Well, he didn?t get to direct the news coverage,? replied Huckabee.

Lawyer in Bieber case fights anti-paparazzi law

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A paparazzo charged with recklessly pursuing Justin Bieber for photos will challenge the constitutionality of the law targeting aggressive celebrity-hounding tactics, his attorney said Friday.

Attorney David S. Kestenbaum filed a motion asking a judge to declare that the 2010 California statute penalizing those who drive recklessly in pursuit of commercial photos is unconstitutional.

The 17-page motion argues the law used to charge his client, Paul Raef, violates First Amendment protections for the press and is too broad.

Kestenbaum filed the motion during a brief hearing that neither Raef nor Bieber attended. The photographer was charged last month with four misdemeanor counts after a July 6 high-speed pursuit on a Los Angeles freeway involving the pop singer and other paparazzi.

Raef is the first person charged under the law.

The motion does not address the specifics of the incident, but rather challenges the law on constitutional grounds. It contends the law is vague because state vehicle codes do not adequately define what would be a photo taken for commercial purposes.

"First and foremost, the statute unconstitutionally singles out the press for a special penalty," the motion states.

A judge will hear the motion during a hearing on Sept. 24. Raef has not yet entered a plea in the case.

Raef, 30, was not arrested during the chase. However, his license plate was reported to police, who investigated and presented the case to city prosecutors. They charged Raef on July 25, but when the photographer appeared for booking, Kestenbaum said police were unaware of the new law and he was not processed.

Kestenbaum said he expects the case will likely end up in an appeals court, regardless of any ruling by a criminal court judge.

Raef has also been charged with more traditional reckless driving and for following other cars too closely.

Prosecutors allege he chased Bieber at more than 80 mph and forced other motorists to avoid collisions while Raef tried to get shots of the teen heartthrob.

Tensions in East China Sea indicate changing dynamics

When the flotilla of 21 fishing boats arrived at an island chain at the center of a growing territorial dispute with China, the captains warned the dozens of activists and politicians aboard not to attempt a landing.

Ten of the activists jumped into the shark-infested waters anyway, swimming ashore on Sunday last week and planting the rising sun flag that evokes painful memories of Imperial Japan?s 20th-century march across Asia.

?We feel that they dragged us into an international incident,? said Masanori Tamashiro, one of the boat captains.

That feeling is widely shared in Japan, where a small band of nationalists has pushed the country to assert itself more boldly to counter China?s and South Korea?s economic rise and the former?s quickly evolving territorial ambitions. The conflict with China has raised the specter that the US, Japan?s longtime defender, could be pulled into the fight.

The nationalists have gained traction for their cause in recent months by taking advantage of the Japenese government?s political weakness, forcing the governing party to take a tougher stand on the islands, known as the Senkakus in Japan and the Diaoyutais (???) in China and Taiwan, which also claims them.

Yet the activists are also tapping into a widespread anxiety over China, which intensified two years ago during the last major flare-up over the Diaoyutais. China retaliated then for Japan?s arrest of a fishing captain by starving Japan of the rare earths needed for its already struggling electronics industry. That anxiety became more pronounced in recent months as China expanded its claims in the nearby South China Sea, challenging Vietnam, the Philippines and others over more than 40 islands in a vast area, and backing its statements with aggressive moves that included sending larger patrol boats to disputed waters.

There is still little appetite in pacifist Japan for a full-blown confrontation with China. However, analysts say consensus is growing on the need to stand up to China as power in the region appears to slip further from economically fading Japan and the US.

?We are all gearing up for an international tug of war in this region,? said Narushige Michishita, an expert on security issues at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo. ?Whenever the distribution of power changes in a dramatic way, people start to redraw lines.?

That is what is happening in the South China Sea, which has received more international attention than Japan?s territorial battles. However, experts say the increasingly shrill war of words over disputed islands between Japan and its East Asian neighbors, including China and South Korea, is potentially more explosive. Unlike in the South China Sea, where the frictions center on competition for natural resources, the East Asian island disputes are more about history, rooted in lingering ? and easily ignited ? anger over Japan?s brutal dominance decades ago.

Those raw emotions were loosed over the weekend, as hundreds and possibly thousands of Chinese ? in protests that were at least tolerated by the government ? poured into the streets in several cities to denounce Japan?s claims over the Senkakus.

?The stakes are much higher in East Asia because you have bigger countries in close proximity, and the conflicts are more direct and emotional,? said Kent Calder, director of the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies at Johns Hopkins University.

Canada's leaders slammed over drug shortages

Canada needs a national approach to managing its supply of medicines, starting with a mandatory reporting system for drug shortages, two leading professional journals have urged.

Compared with the more decisive action taken by other nations, Canada has demonstrated a lack of preparedness for - and ability to cope with - the recent "unprecedented" levels of shortages, particularly of antiepileptic, chemotherapy, antibiotic and anaesthetic agents, says an editorial published jointly in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) and the Canadian Pharmacists Journal (CPJ).

These shortages result in poorer health, with consequences such as worsening of medical conditions, negative reactions to substitute drugs, cancellation of surgeries and procedures, and increased costs to patients and the health care system, say authors Dr Matthew Standbrook, deputy editor of the CMAJ, and Rosemary Killeen, editor-in-chief of the CPJ.

"This situation will not improve in the foreseeable future without major changes in how Canadian governments - federal, provincial and territorial - respond to it," they warn, and go on to ask: "if governments do not start showing leadership on this issue, who will act in the interest of Canadian patients?"

While Europe and the US require drugmakers to inform governments in advance of possible drug shortages, Canada is relying on industry to establish a voluntary reporting system. But a mandatory reporting system for impending shortages should be created and maintained, so that healthcare stakeholders at all levels have adequate and timely information with which to make decisions, the authors urge.

"Canada cannot cope adequately with a problem of this scope with 14 regional health systems operating independently - federal involvement in this issue is unavailable," they say, and suggest that, with national leadership to manage the issue, Canada could take other steps to minimise the effects of shortages, including:

- expanding the national pharmaceutical stockpile;

- mandating that there must be at least two or more suppliers for essential drugs; and?

- establishing a system to share supplies across the country and to restock quickly from international supplies if there is a shortage.

They also point out that while regulatory authority for drugs belongs to Health Canada, the agency has "only belatedly" started to inform the public about drug shortages and to expedite approval of alternate suppliers of products that have been in short supply.

Moreover, the authors suggest, delays at Health Canada in approving new drugs and production process improvements for existing drugs have likely exacerbated the shortages.

"The people of Canada deserve greater responsiveness and action from their elected officials to safeguard the supply of some of the most critical components of health care delivery," write Dr Standbrook and Ms Killeen.

"It is ridiculous and intolerable that a wealthy, developed nation like Canada cannot reliably provide medicines to its people," they add.

- The "unnecessary" length of Canada's review and approval process for new cancer drugs was strongly criticised last month in a report by the Fraser Institute, a Canadian free-market policy think tank.

Of the 33 oncology drugs slated for market approval between 2003 and 2011, 30 were approved in the US, 26 in the European Union (EU) and just 24 in Canada, it says. And Health Canada took longer to approve every new cancer drug (apart from one) than the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), where the median review time was 182 days compared to 356 days in Canada.

Moreover, by the end of March 2012, almost 60% of these 24 approved drugs were not covered under public drug plans in any Canadian province, says the Institute.

Coroner: Scott's notes didn't say reason for death

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Los Angeles County coroner's officials say notes left behind by "Top Gun" director Tony Scott did not give a motive why he would kill himself.

Coroner's office spokesman Ed Winter also said Friday the notes didn't mention any health issues.

The 68-year-old Scott died Sunday after leaping from the Vincent Thomas Bridge into Los Angeles Harbor. An autopsy was performed on the British-born director's body Monday, but it will be a month or more before an official cause of death is determined.

Coroner's officials are treating Scott's death as a probable suicide.

Winter says one of the notes left in his car was a list of emergency contact numbers and another included messages to friends and loved ones.

Woman who ruined painting says priest knew

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

People around the world were shocked Wednesday when images of a ruined 19th century Spanish painting of Christ were revealed. But now the woman who altered the painting is saying a priest in the church that was home to the artwork knew she was attempting to touch up the faded piece.

Centro De Estudios Borjanos / EPA

The century-old painting of Christ is seen before and after an elderly woman took paints and brushes to the artwork.

Cecilia Gimenez, identified only as being "in her 80s," spoke to Televisi?n Espa?ola after the story spread.?A reporter asked Gimenez?if she had been instructed to?paint on the artwork.

The BBC provides an English translation of her answer as, "Of course! It was the priest! The priest knew it, he did!"

When asked if she did the work secretly, Gimenez's translated response is, "Of course not! Everybody who came into the church could see I was painting."

But the New York Times reports that authorities in the region at first suspected vandalism, and said Gimenez had acted on her own. Authorities are considering legal action against Gimenez, the Times reports.

Television Espa?ola also spoke with Teresa Garcia, the granddaughter of Elias Garcia Martinez, the artist who painted "Ecce Homo (Behold the Man)" more than a century ago. Garcia seemed to be OK with part of Gimenez's restoration work.

"Until now, she had just painted the tunic, but the problem started when she painted on the head as well," Garcia told the reporter. "She has destroyed this painting."

Officials in the area, near Zaragoza, Spain, have contacted professional art restorers to examine the painting and suggest how it might be repaired.

Reaction to Gimenez's work has been overwhelming. Many who posted responses on TODAY's Facebook page?found the final result humorous, some were outraged that Gimenez attempted to alter the work and others begged for sympathy for the would-be artist.

Wrote Geraldine Hamtil Cassidy, "Look, nobody knows what Jesus really looked like. Maybe her rendition is more accurate..."?

The BBC Europe correspondent described the painting's current state as resembling "a crayon sketch of a very hairy monkey in an ill-fitting tunic."

Should officials take legal action against Gimenez, or just try and fix the artwork as best they can? Tell us on Facebook.
