Earth supports less life than thought

The total mass of life on Earth may be one-third less than thought, altering how active we think life on our planet is, researchers say.

Past estimates of how much life there is on Earth suggested living organisms store about 1 trillion tons of carbon, of which about 30 percent dwells in single-celled microbes in the ocean floor, and about 55 percent rests in land plants.

However, it turns out previous estimates of the amount of life in the ocean floor were based on samples taken in very nutrient-rich areas, such as close to shore. About half the world's ocean is extremely nutrient-poor, meaning that comparably little in the way of life should be found there.

"For the last 10 years it was already suspected that sub-seafloor biomass was overestimated," said researcher Jens Kallmeyer, a geomicrobiologist at the University of Potsdam in Germany and the GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences. "Unfortunately there were no data to prove it."

Over the course of six years, Kallmeyer and his colleagues analyzed data on counts of seafloor microbes and collected sediment samples from ocean sites far away from any coasts and islands. Their findings revealed there were up to 1 million times more cells in coastal sediments than in sediments from open-ocean areas ? known as the "deserts of the sea" due to their scarcity of nutrients.

"The huge variability of microbial abundance between sites has really struck me," Kallmeyer told LiveScience. "It was expected for several years now that there is greater variability than previously thought, but not to that huge extent."

All in all, the researchers estimate about 4 billion tons of carbon are stored in microbes in the ocean floor instead of 300 billion tons. This reduces the estimated amount of the world's biomass drastically by about a third. [ 50 Amazing Facts About Earth ]

Kallmeyer and his colleagues now want to consider the age of the sediments where microbes dwell as well, since different parts of the ocean may change and operate on very different time scales.

"For example, a cell in 2-meters (6-feet) depth in the South Pacific Gyre may reside in 20-million-year-old sediment, whereas the same age in a coastal sediment would be in over 100-meters (330 feet) depth," Kallmeyer said.

Wealth managers talk about challenges, risk and what's ahead ...

Monday, August 27, 2012, 6:00 am

By Eric Gneckow, Business Journal Staff Reporter

The Business Journal surveyed wealth management advisers across the North Bay on three questions related to the investment climate today and long term. The responses of nearly two dozen follow.

(Listed alphabetically by company name)

Colleen Supran, principal

Bingham, Osborn & Scarborough, LLC

1201 Vine St., Ste. 102, Healdsburg, 707-433-7300, www.bosinvest.com

Describe one significant challenge that you currently face as a wealth adviser.

Colleen Supran

Fixed income is an important part of our clients? portfolios; however, future bond performance may look very different from the above-average returns we experienced over the past 30 years. Interest rates are at very low levels and if rates rise in the future, bond prices will decline. Although we have been hearing predictions of higher interest rates for years, no one knows for sure when (or if) rates will rise. We address this uncertainty by using short- to intermediate-maturity bonds in client portfolios. These bonds tend to be more stable when interest rates change, steadying portfolio values when stock price volatility increases.

What mistakes do you see individual investors making in the current financial climate?

Interest rates (as measured by the 10-year U.S. Treasury) are near record lows and the Federal Reserve has vowed to keep yields low for the foreseeable future. Investors starved for yield are buying higher-risk securities that they may not understand or want to own if they could earn some interest on CDs or a money market account. To achieve high yields in this environment an investor must take on more risk. This is often an unacceptable tradeoff for the portion of a portfolio that should be invested in stable, low-risk assets.

What plot lines are you following as you look towards the future for investing?

We live in an uncertain world and investors will always have plenty to consider. As much as the world around us changes, we recognize that the plot line for the future is based on each client?s unique situation. Changes in a client?s work or family situation are often more meaningful inputs than the myriad of economic and global worries that are an inevitable part of the investment landscape. We spend a significant amount of time understanding individual risk tolerance and building portfolios that are customized to meet each investor?s needs.

Charles Root, managing director

Double Eagle Financial

2300 Bethards Dr., Ste. R, PO Box 2790, Santa Rosa, 707-576-1313, www.double-eaglefinancial.com

Describe one significant challenge that you currently face as a wealth adviser.??

Charles Root

The major challenge is that too many clients watch the nightly news and see the overly negative news about the economy and everything in general. Rarely one sees any positive reinforcement to the changes that have been taking place and there have been many good ones that allow one to take advantage of business opportunities.

That said, businesses are concerned about costs and uncertainty, as well as future increase in taxes and healthcare costs.

With all these uncertainties, no one wants to make a move other than to hold on to their cash and resources.

What mistakes do you see individual investors making in the current financial climate???

Individual investors always make the same mistakes every cycle, which is one of the reasons the cycles are accentuated. They get impatient and sell at the worst critical part of the market and then wait until most of the recovery has taken place to buy back in. As a result they usually are out of phase with the market. Surveys have shown that individual investors have lower returns than professionals. One needs assurance by an expert adviser that will keep the investor calm in any kind of a market. Also, few investors or advisers for that matter know how to implement proper risk management when the market does start to go south.

What plot lines are you following as you look towards the future for investing?

Our game plan has few changes. We use an Offense plan and a Defense plan. We are now in the early stages of our Offense plan, that is to begin with serious money into the market when our charts give correct signals. During the period from May to October, the historical returns are minimal, so we are very cautious about putting large amounts into the market unless we have a strong signal to do so. We are always cautious unless we see strong signals for market bottoms.

As always our first rule is risk management, not to lose client money. Gain is secondary, since with small draw downs, one doesn?t need to get huge returns.

Gonzalez homers in debut, Dodgers beat Marlins 8-2

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Adrian Gonzalez hit a three-run homer on the second pitch he saw in a Los Angeles Dodgers uniform, and Andre Ethier tied a franchise record with his 10th straight hit in an 8-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on Saturday night.

Clayton Kershaw pitched three-hit ball over eight innings for the new-look Dodgers, hours after they acquired Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett in a blockbuster trade with Boston.

Ethier and Mark Ellis also went deep for Los Angeles.

Gonzalez, a four-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove first baseman, batted cleanup between Matt Kemp and Hanley Ramirez, with Ethier dropped to sixth despite his four hits and four RBIs in Friday night's 11-4 win over the Marlins in the series opener.

Complete Guidelines to Health and Fitness: 5 Tips To Increase HDL ...

Thanks to powerful cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, driving down low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or "bad" cholesterol, has been the primary approach to improving cholesterol levels. But there's more to the story of cholesterol and cardiovascular risk than LDL alone. Another key player is high-density lipoprotein (HDL), the "good" cholesterol. Higher levels of HDL are associated with lower cardiovascular risk. The good news about this good cholesterol is that simple lifestyle changes can help boost HDL, reports in issue of Harvard Women's Health Watch.

HDL removes LDL from artery walls and ferries it to the liver for processing or removal. HDL also fights potentially dangerous inflammation and clot formation. According to a recent review of research on HDL, there's some evidence that increasing HDL can reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke even without changes in LDL.

Harvard Women's Health Watch suggests several things people can do to nudge up HDL levels. Most of these strategies also improve health in other ways.

1. Get aerobic exercise. Moderate to vigorous aerobic exercise can boost HDL by 5% to 10%. Aim for five 30-minute sessions per week.

2. Lose weight if you need to. If you're overweight or obese, you can boost your HDL level by about 1 mg/dL for every seven pounds lost, although any amount of weight loss will help.

3. If you smoke, quit. HDL levels rise by as much as 15% to 20% after you quit.

4. Eat a healthy diet. Avoid trans fats, which increase bad cholesterol and decrease good cholesterol. Avoid highly refined carbohydrates, such as white-flour products.

5. Consider medications. Niacin, available over the counter, is the most effective HDL-raising medication available. Niacin can be strong medicine work with your clinician if you want to try it.

Martians, flying saucers discovered on Mars, report extremely unreliable sources ( video)

Online news outlets that should not under any circumstances be trusted report that NASA's Curiosity Mars rover has captured images of advanced life on the Red Planet.

According to the fringe sector of the Internet, Mars is practically teeming with aliens.

Since NASA's Curiosity rover touched down on the Red Planet two weeks ago and powered up its cameras, it has already managed to photograph several alleged UFOs and other "anomalies" in the surrounding landscape.

From classic flying saucers to an absurdly out-of-place fossilized human finger, here's a rundown of what UFO believers claim to have found in Curiosity photos so far. [Gallery of Mars 'UFO' Photos]

Horizon anomaly (aka impact cloud)

Speculation about Martians in Curiosity's midst got off to a running start when the very first sequence of photos taken by the rover raised questions. A hazy, distant object mysteriously appeared and then disappeared in consecutive images of the Martian horizon, perplexing even NASA scientists at first.

But the?much-discussed "anomaly"?turned out not to be a sign of alien activity, but rather the plume of dust kicked up by the sky crane that delivered the rover close to the Martian surface, then veered off and struck the ground some 2,000 feet (600 meters) away.

"We believe we've caught what is the descent stage impact on the Martian surface," said NASA engineer Steven Sell, sky crane specialist on the Curiosity mission.

Flying saucers (aka dead pixels)

In footage posted?to YouTube Aug. 18, user "StephenHannardADGUK" applies a series of filters to a Curiosity image of the nearby rim of Gale crater, revealing what he says are four flying saucer-like objects stationed in the sky. More than 700,000 people have since given the video a gander.

"Four objects caught by Mars Curiosity, very difficult to make out on original image so I have used a few filters to highlight," he said in the video description. "What are these four objects? UFOs, Dust particles, or something else? As always you decide."

Experts say the four "objects" are actually just dead pixels in the rover's CCD camera ? single points in the camera's imager that have lost functionality and register as white. Marc D'Antonio, a photo and video analyst for MUFON [Mutual UFO?Network], told Huffington Post, "I fully concur at this point that these are dead pixels on the imager. All CCD [cameras] have them, and in a bland atmosphere like that at Mars, they would be very obvious as opposed to an active atmosphere like Earth, where they could end up hidden for a long time before anyone noticed them."

Photoshop filtering processes often blend, color-correct or contrast-heighten images in ways that turn single dead pixels into larger, more prominent shapes. In other words, "using a few filters" is exactly what the YouTube user should not have done in trying to clarify the contents of the Curiosity photo. ??

Japan finds 'banned N. Korea items' on ship: report

Japanese customs officials have found goods believed to be from North Korea and whose export is banned aboard a cargo ship in Tokyo, a report said Saturday.

The ship entered a container terminal on Wednesday after officials obtained information North Korea might have loaded internationally-banned items onto the vessel, Kyodo news agency reported citing unidentified sources.

The customs officials found several containers believed to have been exported from North Korea. They contained items including aluminum rods which could be converted for military use and steel products, the report said.

The products in the containers had markings which showed that they were manufactured in the reclusive communist state, Kyodo quoted the sources as saying.

It is the first probe carried out under a cargo inspection law, which came into force in 2010 following a United Nations Security Council resolution adopted in 2009 to punish North Korea for its second nuclear test.

The law allows Japanese authorities to inspect foreign-flagged vessels suspected of carrying banned materials from or to North Korea.

The cargo ship was believed to have set sail from the northeastern Chinese city of Dalian, heading to Southeast Asian countries via Tokyo, Kyodo said.

Isaac hugs Cuba coast; Cat 2 hurricane likely in Gulf

Haitians this morning are assessing the damage from Tropical Storm Isaac's landfall on a vulnerable country still recovering from the earthquake of 2010.

By NBC News and wire services

Updated at 3 p.m. ET:?Tropical Storm Isaac was hugging the northern coastline of eastern Cuba on Saturday after claiming at least three lives in Haiti. Isaac should become a Category 1 hurricane on Sunday just as it nears the Florida Keys, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said, and then grow into an even stronger Category 2 storm.

"Hurricane conditions are expected in the hurricane warning area in southwest Florida and the Florida Keys on Sunday," the center said in an advisory.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott on Saturday declared a state of emergency to make sure local and state agencies would be ready.

The center now expects Isaac to build to a Category 2 hurricane, with winds around 100 mph, after it enters the warmer waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Isaac is a massive storm, with tropical storm-force winds extending 230 miles from the center. Key West International Airport was halting all flights at 7 p.m. Saturday until the storm had passed.

In Haiti, a woman and a child in the town of Souvenance were killed in the storm, a local official reported.

In the capital Port-au-Prince --?where some 350,000 people are still living in tents or shelters after the 2010 Haiti earthquake --?a girl, 10, was killed when a wall fell on her.

Dieu Nalio Chery / AP

Residents wade through a flooded street in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on Saturday.

Power outages and flooding were reported as Isaac moved across the hilly and severely deforested Caribbean country.

"There's a lot of rain, a lot of wind," said Magdala Jean-Baptiste, who huddled with her frightened children in their home in the southern coastal city of Jacmel. "We haven't had any power since the storm started yesterday. We passed the night with no sleep."?

In neighboring Dominican Republic, Isaac felled power and phone lines and left at least a dozen towns cut off by flood waters. The most severe damage was reported along the south coast, including the capital Santo Domingo, where more than half the city was without power.

Cuba prepared by closing beaches and evacuating tourists in vulnerable areas, NBC's Mary Murray and The Weather Channel's Mike Seidel reported from Havana. Flights across Cuba were also suspended.?

In Baracoa, a city on Cuba's eastern side, high seas began topping the seawall Friday night, Radio Baracoa reported.?

Now with 60 mph winds, Isaac should exit Cuba on Sunday and then move south of the Florida Keys and into the Gulf.

Republicans are preparing to gather in Tampa, on Florida's central Gulf Coast, for Monday's start of their national convention ahead of the November presidential election.

The convention is expected to proceed as planned but Gulf of Mexico operators began shutting down offshore oil and gas rigs on Friday ahead of the storm.?

Follow Isaac's path with our storm tracker
Live updates and analysis from weather.com

Tampa's weather forecast includes rain and high winds Sunday night and into Monday, The Weather Channel reported. The winds could gust up to 60 mph.

Monday and Tuesday include a risk of tornadoes across south Florida.?

Officials were handing out sandbags to residents in the Tampa area, which often floods when heavy rainstorms hit. Sandbags also were being handed out in Homestead, 20 years after Hurricane Andrew devastated the community there. Otherwise, however, convention preparations were moving ahead as usual.

Isaac's exact path is still unclear, but the hurricane center said models suggest it will make landfall somewhere?between the Florida Panhandle and New Orleans on Tuesday night.

The storm's anticipated path did shift closer to the Keys than previously forecast and emergency managers urged tourists to leave the islands if they could do so safely. A single road links the chain of islands to the Florida Peninsula.?

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Apple triumphs over Samsung in landmark patent case | Firstpost

SAN JOSE, California (Reuters) ? Apple Inc (AAPL.O) scored a sweeping legal victory over Samsung (005930.KS) on Friday as a U.S. jury found the Korean company had copied critical features of the hugely popular iPhone and iPad and awarded the U.S. company $1.05 billion in damages.

The verdict ? which came after less than three days of jury deliberations ? could lead to an outright ban on sales of key Samsung products and will likely solidify Apple?s dominance of the exploding mobile computing market.

Apple?s victory is a big blow to Google, whose Android software powers the Samsung products that were found to infringe on Apple patents. Google and its hardware partners, including the company?s own Motorola unit, could now face further legal hurdles in their effort to compete with the Apple juggernaut.

Samsung lawyers were grimfaced in the quiet but crowded San Jose courtroom as the verdict was read, and the company later put out a statement calling the outcome ?a loss for the American consumer.?

The jury deliberated for less than three days before delivering the verdict on seven Apple patent claims and five Samsung patent claims ? suggesting that the nine-person panel had little difficulty in concluding that Samsung had copied the iPhone and the iPad.

Because the panel found ?willful? infringement, Apple could seek triple damages.

Apple upended the mobile phone business when it introduced the iPhone in 2007, and shook the industry again in 2010 when it rolled out the iPad.

It has been able to charge premium prices for the iPhone ? with profit margins of as much as 58 percent per phone ? for a product consumers regarded as a huge advance in design and usability.

The company?s late founder, Steve Jobs, vowed to ?go to thermonuclear war? when Google launched Android, according to his biographer, and the company has filed lawsuits around the world in an effort to block what it considers brazen copying of its inventions.

The legal win on Friday came one year after CEO Tim Cook assumed the helm of the company. Shares in Apple, which just this week became the biggest company by market value in history, climbed almost 2 percent to a record high of $675 in after-hours trade.

Brian Love, a Santa Clara law school professor, described the verdict as a crushing victory for Apple: ?This is the best-case scenario Apple could have hoped for.?

CHALLENGE FOR COMPETITORS

The verdict comes as competition in the mobile device industry intensifies, with Google jumping into hardware for the first time with its Nexus 7 tablet, and Microsoft?s new touchscreen friendly Windows 8 coming in October, led by its ?Surface? tablet.

Apple?s victory could present immediate issues for companies that sell Android-based smartphones and tablets, including Google?s own Motorola subsidiary, which it acquired last year for $12.5 billion, and HTC (2498.TW) of Taiwan.

Amazon (AMZN.O) ? which has made major inroads into the tablet market with its cheaper Kindle Fire ? uses a modified version of Android for its Kindle products but has not yet been subject to legal challenge by Apple.

Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu said the entire Android universe may now have to consider ?doing something different.?

?It doesn?t take a rocket scientist to look at it and figure it out,? he said. ?Prior to the iPhone, none of the phones were like that. Android, if you look at it, is very similar.?

Some in the industry say Apple?s legal offensive is bad for consumers.

?Thx Apple it?s now mandatory for tech companies to sue each other. Prices go up, competition & innovation suffer,? Mark Cuban, an Internet entrepreneur and owner of the Dallas Mavericks basketball team, said in a Twitter message.

But the legal battles are far from over. In a separate but related case, Apple has won a pre-trial injunction against the Google Nexus tablet. Another lawsuit, against Motorola, was thrown out recently by a federal judge in Chicago, but litigation between the two at the International Trade Commission continues.

Earlier on Friday, a South Korean court found that both companies shared blame for patent infringement, ordering Samsung to stop selling 10 products including its Galaxy S II phone and banning Apple from selling four different products, including its iPhone 4.

Still, the trial on Apple?s home turf ? the world?s largest and most influential technology market ? was considered the most important test of whether Apple would be able to gain substantial patent protection for the iPhone and the iPad.

FAST-PACED, HIGH-STRESS TRIAL

The legal fight began last year when Apple sued Samsung in multiple countries, and Samsung countersued. The U.S. jury spent most of August in a packed federal courtroom in San Jose ? just miles from Apple?s headquarters in Cupertino ? listening to testimony, examining evidence and watching lawyers from both sides joust about patents and damage claims.

Jurors received over 100 pages of legal instructions from U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh on August 21, prior to hearing the closing arguments from attorneys.

Lawyers from both tech giants used their 25 hours each of trial time to present internal emails, draw testimony from designers and experts, and put on product demonstrations and mockups to convince the jury.

At times, their questions drew testimony that offered glimpses behind the corporate facade, such as the margins on the iPhone and Samsung?s sales figures in the United States.

From the beginning, Apple?s tactic was to present what it thought was chronological evidence of Samsung copying its phone.

Juxtaposing pictures of phones from both companies and internal Samsung emails that specifically analyzed the features of the iPhone, Apple?s attorneys accused Samsung of taking shortcuts after realizing it could not keep up.

Samsung?s attorneys, on the other hand, maintained Apple had no sole right to geometric designs such as rectangles with rounded corners. They called Apple?s damage claim ?ridiculous? and urged the jury to consider that a verdict in favor of Apple could stifle competition and reduce choices for consumers.

Samsung?s trial team appeared to suffer from strategic difficulties throughout the case. Judge Koh gave each side 25 hours to present evidence, but Samsung had used more time than Apple before Samsung even began calling its own witnesses.

By the end of the trial, Samsung attorneys had to forgo cross-examination of some Apple witnesses due to time constraints. During closing arguments, Samsung lead attorney Charles Verhoeven played mostly defense, spending relatively little time discussing Samsung?s patent claims against Apple.

The jury had not been expected to return a decision so rapidly. Even on Friday, Samsung?s lead lawyer was spotted casually clad in a polo T-shirt and jeans.

But late Friday afternoon, a court officer announced a verdict had been reached. After the verdict was read, Koh found some inconsistencies in the complex jury form and asked the jury to revisit it, ultimately resulting in a reduction of about $2 million in the damages award.

The jury decided Samsung infringed six out of seven Apple patents in the case, and that Apple had not infringed any of Samsung?s patents. Apple?s protected technology includes the ability for a mobile device to distinguish one finger on the screen or two, the design of screen icons, and the front surface of the phone.

The jury also upheld the validity of Apple?s patents, and said Samsung acted willfully when it violated several of Apple?s patents. That could form a basis for Koh to triple the damages tab owed by Samsung.

?This is a vindication of Apple?s effort to create significant airspace around their design, and that?s relevant not just for Samsung, but for firms coming over the horizon,? said Nick Rodelli, a lawyer and adviser to institutional investors for CFRA Research in Maryland.

Apple?s lawyers said they planned to file for an injunction against Samsung products within seven days. Koh set a hearing for September 20.

The case in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, is Apple Inc v. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd et al, No. 11-1846.
