No escape from domestic politics for Clinton in Asia

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is missing the Democratic Party convention to build ties in Asia as the US relationship with China increasingly encroaches on politics back home.

Clinton, the most travelled Secretary of State in US history, was heading Sunday from a summit in the remote Cook Islands to Indonesia before she meets China's top leaders Tuesday and Wednesday in Beijing.

She will represent President Barack Obama at an Asia-Pacific summit in Vladivostok on September 8-9. The president formally launches his re-election bid at this week's Democratic convention in North Carolina.

Since narrowly losing the party nomination to Obama in 2008, Clinton has devoted her energy to foreign policy and carefully stayed out of domestic politics -- never showing an inch of public distance with her former rival while also maintaining cordial relationships with the rival Republican Party.

But China -- a major priority throughout her term -- has increasingly become a focus of Republican attacks with Obama's opponent Mitt Romney vowing a harder line on issues including trade, human rights and the military balance.

Representative Paul Ryan, Romney's pick for vice president, said that a Republican administration would do more to crack down on China's "cheating" on trade including "stealing" of US intellectual property.

Obama "said he'd go to the mat with China. Instead they're treating him like a doormat," Ryan told a rally in August in battleground state Ohio.

Romney has vowed that he would declare immediately that China is manipulating its currency by keeping the yuan artificially low and has accused Obama of keeping the US military "vastly under-resourced."

The Obama administration, while supporting some cuts in military spending, plans to reinforce the US presence in Asia and argues that it has filed a record number of trade complaints against China.

Clinton, asked in the Cook Islands about China's growing influence in the South Pacific, said that the United States wanted a "comprehensive, positive, cooperative relationship" between the world's two largest economies.

"We think it is good for our country, it's good for our people and, in fact, it's not only good for this region, it's good for the world," Clinton told reporters.

Clinton said that the United States also spoke "very frankly" on disagreements. She is expected in Asia to reaffirm calls for freedom of navigation in South China Sea, where Southeast Asian nations have accused Beijing of growing assertiveness.

China's state media have accused Clinton of seeking to "contain" the rising power through her trip, although Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai sounded a more conciliatory note in the Cook Islands.

The state-run Xinhua news agency has had harsher words for Romney, accusing him of "poisoning the general atmosphere of US-China relations" through his "blame-China game."

Former US presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush also campaigned for a tougher line on Beijing -- Clinton's 1992 campaign spoke of the "butchers of Beijing" over the Tiananmen Square crackdown -- but chose cooperation once they entered the White House.

Still, Romney's promises are unusually specific. Nina Hachigian, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning think tank, said that branding China a currency manipulator would serve no purpose but potentially set off a trade war.

"It's not that we need to play 'nice' with China. We just need to find the best ways to further American interests. Basic human common sense suggests we should not anger China's top leaders and get nothing for it," Hachigian said.

Romney has also been strongly critical of Obama on Russia, calling Moscow the "number one geopolitical foe" of the United States.

Ernie Bower of the Center for Strategic and International Studies said he expected Clinton to "play it straight" on her trip and leave political squabbles up to Obama and his political team.

"Even for the Republicans, if you talk to the Romney people, they think that she has done a pretty good job," Bower said.

Clinton, who turns 65 next month, has repeatedly said that she will retire at the end of Obama's term in January regardless of the election and is not interested in another run for the White House.

But Clinton -- a hate figure for the right when she was first lady -- is now ranked in polls as one of the most popular US political figures, fuelling constant chatter of a new White House campaign in 2016.

Bill Clinton, who had an uneasy relationship with Obama in 2008 but has since rallied to his side, will deliver a key speech for him at the Democratic convention.

Pakistan imam held for evidence-tampering in blasphemy case

A Pakistani cleric who submitted evidence against a Christian girl accused of blasphemy has been arrested on suspicion of burning pages from the Koran and evidence-tampering, police said Sunday.

Rimsha has been in custody since she was arrested in the poor Islamabad suburb of Mehrabad more than two weeks ago accused of burning papers containing verses from the Koran, in breach of Pakistan's strict blasphemy laws.

Hafiz Mohammed Khalid Chishti, the imam of the mosque in Rimsha's area who first handed over evidence, was arrested on Saturday after his assistants told a magistrate he had added pages from the Koran to the burnt pages to strengthen the case against the girl.

"The imam was arrested after his deputy Maulvi Zubair and two others told a magistrate he added pages from the Koran to the burnt pages brought to him by a witness," police investigator Munir Hussain Jaffri said.

Zubair and the two others, Mohammad Shahzad and Awais Ahmed, told police they had urged Chishti not to interfere with the papers, Jaffri said.

"They protested that he should not add something to the evidence and he should give the evidence to the police as he got it and should not do this," Jaffri said.

"But they said Chishti said: 'You know this is the only way to expel the Christians from this area'."

On August 24 Chishti told AFP he thought Rimsha had burned the pages deliberately as part of a Christian "conspiracy" to insult Muslims and said action should have been taken sooner to stop what he called their "anti-Islam activities" in Mehrabad.

Jaffri said the cleric was arrested at his home on Saturday under the blasphemy law for allegedly burning pages from the Koran to add to the evidence against Rimsha.

"He has committed a greater offence than the girl by burning the pages himself and adding to the evidence that was given to him and he should get punishment," Jaffri said.

A medical report earlier this week said Rimsha appeared to be around 14 years old, which would make her a minor, and had a mental age below her true age, but the court has yet to decide whether to accept the assessment.

Some reports have said Rimsha has Down's Syndrome and her case has prompted concern from Western governments and anger from rights groups, who warn the blasphemy legislation is often abused to settle personal vendettas.

She is being held in a high-security jail in Islamabad's twin city Rawalpindi and on Friday a judge extended her remand for another two weeks.

Blasphemy is a very sensitive subject in the Pakistan, where 97 percent of the 180 million population are Muslims, and allegations of insulting Islam or the Prophet Mohammed often prompt a furious public reaction.

Bombs, fighting as Red Cross chief heads to Syria

The chief of the Red Cross was on Monday headed to Syria on a humanitarian mission, his office said, as an air strike on a northern rebel bastion killed 18 people and a car bomb rocked a Damascus suburb.

Also lining up for a visit to the violence-wracked country was new UN-Arab League peace envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, who has openly admitted that his mission is "nearly impossible."

The high-profile visits come as violence escalates in Syrian flashpoints and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported more than 5,000 people, mainly civilians, killed in August alone.

Peter Maurer, the new head of the International Committee of the Red Cross, was travelling to Damascus on Monday for a three-day visit and would meet President Bashar al-Assad the following day, his office said.

The visit is Maurer's first to Syria since he took up his duties as president on July 1, the ICRC said in a statement.

During his visit, Maurer would meet Assad, as well as Foreign Minister Walid Muallem and several other ministers "to discuss pressing humanitarian issues," it added.

"At a time when more and more civilians are being exposed to extreme violence, it is of the utmost importance that we and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent succeed in significantly scaling up our humanitarian response," Maurer said in the statement.

Jihad Makdissi, a spokesman for Assad's embattled government, late Sunday announced that newly-appointed peace envoy Brahimi would "soon" travel to Damascus, expressing confidence that "he will listen to us." He gave no idea of when the visit would begin.

Brahimi however gave a deeply pessimistic view of the task ahead of him, in an interview with the BBC.

"I know how difficult it is -- how nearly impossible. I can't say impossible -- (it is) nearly impossible," he said.

He said he was "scared of the weight of responsibility. People are already saying people are dying and what are you doing?"

Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoabi told journalists in Damascus on Monday that Brahimi's success depends on states such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

"The success of Lakhdar Brahimi does not depend on Syria," Zoabi said.

"Brahimi's success depends on certain states -- such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey -- respecting his mission, by closing their borders to armed men, and by ceasing to provide weapons," he added.

On the war front, an air strike by a Syrian fighter jet on a building in the northern rebel-held town of Al-Bab in Aleppo province killed at least 10 men, six women and two children, the Britain-based Observatory said.

"The victims included two children, a girl and a boy," Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP. "They died when the fighter jet bombed the building where they were sheltered."

The army also pounded several districts of the nearby city of Aleppo, the Observatory said, more than six weeks after the start of what Assad's regime warned would be "the mother of all battles" in Syria's commercial hub.

The air strike on Al-Bab followed a series of attacks on towns and villages in the Aleppo countryside, as regime forces fight to break rebel supply lines into the city.

The Observatory gave a preliminary toll of 45 people -- 20 civilians, 12 soldiers and 13 rebel fighters -- killed Monday in Syria after 132 people were killed the previous day.

The watchdog, which has a network of activists on the ground, also reported that a car bomb ripped through the mainly Christian and Druze suburb of Jaramana on Monday and that there were unconfirmed reports of several wounded.

The southeastern suburb was previously hit by a car bomb on August 28, when at least 27 people attending a funeral for two supporters of the Damascus regime were killed.

"There is an increase of the use of car bombs in Syria," Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Observatory, told AFP.

Concerned by the escalating violence, monarchies in the Gulf on Sunday sharply criticised Syria's regime for deploying heavy weapons against its own civilians and urged a peaceful transition of power in the country.

The six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council at a meeting in Jeddah also urged the international community to "assume their responsibilities and take measures to protect civilians" in Syria.

The GCC -- which comprises Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait -- in a statement issued after the meeting in the Saudi city condemned "the ongoing massacres which are due to the obstinacy of the regime in using heavy weapons, including planes and tanks" against civilians.

According to the Observatory, at least 26,283 people have been killed in Syria since the revolt began in March last year -- 18,695 civilians, 1,079 defectors and 6,509 troops.

Cousins Johnson, Rawlins enjoyed a feast of college recruiters

By Jeff Oliver

Published: Friday, August 31, 2012, 12:01?a.m.
Updated 13 hours ago

Over the course of the early committing period for high school football players, Belle Vernon Area?s Dorian Johnson and Monessen Chavas Rawlins received a combined 55 offers from Division I schools.

No other area players in the last two decades had been in such demand on the national level and received the number of offers that Johnson, a 6-6, 290-pound tackle, and Rawlins, a 6-3, 188-pound quarterback, were inundated with.

And what adds to the intrigue of the recruiting of the two is that they are cousins.

Both committed early to avoid the distraction of the college wooing during their senior seasons. Rawlins said ?yes? to West Virginia University while Johnson committed to Penn State.

However, in light of NCAA sanctions against Penn State over the Jerry Sandusky incidents, Johnson has since de-committed and said his top three choices are Pitt, Ohio State and Virginia Tech.

He does not plan to make an announcement any time soon as he said he wants to concentrate on the upcoming season with the Leps.

The duo feasted on opposing players and enjoyed a cornucopia of colleges and universities seeking their services.

Now they both hope to enjoy a championship banquet their senior seasons.

Family ties

When Johnson and Rawlins are asked about their family relationship, they both laugh and say they are ?distant cousins? and claim that while families are what got them together in the first place, they just had a natural friendship that has blossomed over the years.

?We got to know each other when he lived next to my family in Monessen when we were little kids,? said Rawlins. ?He moved away at an early age, but we always stayed friends.?

?We hung out as little kids,? Johnson said. ?And even though we go to different schools, we always stayed in touch. Obviously, once we got in high school and started playing football, we talked a lot more often.?

?The way we talk, it?s almost like he?s my brother, not my cousin,? Rawlins said. ?We share a lot, especially during the recruiting process.?

Although Johnson and Rawlins admitted that their immediate families don?t gather for family functions, they both take pride in the fact that they are related.

?I think it?s pretty cool that two cousins have managed to do what we were able to do to get so many schools to want us,? Johnson said.

?My mother always told me our family was special,? said Rawlins. ?I just think the fact that Dorian and I have gotten to this point proves she was right. Plus, when you add the fact that Pitt has already offered my (younger) brother, Justice, a scholarship, well, it shows you just how special our family really is. I think we?re all proud of that.?
Johnson, who said his mother and grandmother are two of the people who most influenced his development as a person and athlete, said his family gets together at his grandmother?s every Sunday for dinner.

Both he and Rawlins smiled when asked what family get-togethers might be like five or six years from now if both make it to the NFL.

?We might have to all get together if that happens,? Johnson said with a grin.

?That would be something,? said Rawlins. ?I think we both have the ability to get there one day. If we do, then those get togethers would be something.?

And the food would taste pretty good, too.

Football roots

Johnson started playing football when he was five years old in the Belle Vernon Midget Football League for the Washington Township Redskins.

He actually recalls starting his career as a linebacker before moving to the line.

?I was a lot bigger than most of the kids in midget league, so I everntually moved to the line,? he said.

Rawlins started playing football eight years ago for Monessen?s flag football team in the Mon Valley Midget Football League.

?That?s a long time ago,? he said, rolling his eyes.

While Johnson said he found out he was ?pretty good? at football when he reached middle school, Rawlins said it was a little later for him.

?My junior year is when I realized I was going to take my football career further,? Rawlins said. ?I always thought I was a basketball player until the way my junior season played out. I had a breakout year and the first scholarship offer came and they kept coming. I was like, ?wow.??

?When I was in seventh grade and I started playing with kids my own size and I still was pushing them around, I figured I could play,? Johnson said. ?Before that, I was way bigger and I just thought it was my size.?

Coachspeak

BVA coach Aaron Krepps and Monessen mentor Andy Pacak know the talents of Johnson and Rawlins, respectively, better than anyone else. And they aren?t shy about singing their stars? praises.

?I haven?t seen another lineman like Dorian at this stage of his career,? Krepps said. ?I don?t have a ton of years under my belt, but I do know I?ve never had a lineman of his caliber.

?He is very worthy of all the scholarship offers he received.?

Pacak, who has been at Monessen 30 years as a player, assistant coach and now head coach, said that Rawlins has attracted more attention than any Greyhound he was ever around.

?The old-timers here say you have to go all the way back to the 1960s and early 70s to when there were that many big-time colleges coming to Monessen,? Pacak said. ?And even then, they weren?t all coming for one player.?

Krepps said that Johnson has the energy to be successful, along with the talent. He added that the facts that he is so coachable and is a hard worker make him even more of a pleasure to coach.

?He?s a great kid,? Krepps said. ?He listens and he works to get better. He doesn?t have a superstar attitude.?

Pacak claims that not only does Rawlins have the talent to play at the next level, he has the leadership charisma as well.

?Colleges saw his highlight tape and couldn?t wait to talk to him,? Pacak said. ?But once they sat down with him, when they were done all of them told me, ?I gotta have this kid.?

?Some of them wanted him as a quarterback and others as a defensive back, but they all said the same thing. They said by the time he is a junior, he will be a captain on their team because of his leadership qualities,? Pacak said. ?He?s that special of a kid.?

Krepps said he feels for Johnson about the Penn State situation, saying his star lineman did everything the right way to make an early decision and things outside of his control changed that.

?He (decided early) for a reason and now he has to go through that process again,? Krepps said. ?But I admire the way he is handling it. He has put the colleges on hold because he wants to concentrate on being a leader for this team and having a successful senior year. Recruiting is on the backburner now for him. Not many kids would make that decision.?

2012 expectations

Neither Johnson nor Rawlins are looking past their senior seasons. Both said they have waited a long time to be seniors and they not only want to enjoy their last year of high school football, but want to make the most of it.

?The first goal for us is to win the conference and then win the WPIAL,? said Johnson. ?Those are our goals. I just want to have a great senior season. That?s all I?m concentrating on.?

?This team is more determined than any other team I ever played with,? said Rawlins. ?We know our conference is stronger and we have worked hard all off-season and during camp to be ready.

?I know where I?m going to college,? he added. ?But there are places I want to take this team first.?

Let the feast begin.

First since '52: No talk of war in GOP speech

WASHINGTON (AP) ? With America embroiled in its longest armed conflict, Mitt Romney became the first Republican since 1952 to accept his party's nomination without mentioning war.

Three election cycles after the 2001 terrorist attacks, neither Romney nor his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, had anything to say about terrorism or war while on his party's biggest stage Thursday. The only one who did was actor Clint Eastwood, who won cheers for suggesting invading Afghanistan was a mistake and calling for an immediate withdrawal of troops ? a line that might have earned boos and catcalls four years ago.

The Romney strategy reflects the weak public support for the Afghanistan war, fatigue over a decade of terrorism fears and the central role of the economy in the campaign. But it was still a remarkable shift in tone for a party that, even in times of peace, has used the specter of war to call for greater military spending and tough foreign policy.

Candidates Barry Goldwater and Richard Nixon criticized the handling of the Vietnam War. Bob Dole said the way to prevent conflict is to prepare for more, greater wars than a country will need to fight. Ronald Reagan warned that a weak nation would tempt the Soviet Union.

"Four times in my lifetime America has gone to war, bleeding the lives of its young men into the sands of beachheads, the fields of Europe and the jungles and rice paddies of Asia," Reagan said in 1980. "We know only too well that war comes not when the forces of freedom are strong, but when they are weak."

Even President Gerald Ford, who in 1976, a year after the last U.S. troops left Vietnam, declared that, "not a single American is at war anywhere on the face of this Earth tonight," went on to say, "A strong military posture is always the best insurance for peace."

Things are different now, 11 years after President George W. Bush pledged to "starve terrorists of funding, turn them one against another, drive them from place to place, until there is no refuge or rest."

Osama bin Laden is dead. The Iraq war is over. Al-Qaida is weakened. The color coded alerts that for years warned of a constant, unseen danger have faded away. None of the presidential or vice presidential candidates for either party has ever served in the military, a first in 80 years.

And although 79,000 troops remain in Afghanistan, public support has eroded for the decadelong campaign there. An AP-GfK poll found in May that 66 percent of voters believe the country should not be involved in Afghanistan anymore. That same poll found that only 37 percent of Republicans backed the war.

Republican strategist Tony Fratto said was it odd, personally, to hear a major Republican speech with no mention of the issue that has so dominated the past decade. Fratto served as a White House spokesman and aide to the younger Bush, whose presidency was consumed by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But with 8.3 percent unemployment nationwide, Republicans see the economy as the driving issue this year. And Fratto said Romney's primary goal Thursday night was to connect with voters on a personal level and redraw the caricature of him as wooden and out of touch.

"If you're going to leave some things out, you're going to leave out things that aren't highest on the list of concerns of voters," Fratto said. "It's more reflective of what Americans are interested in hearing from their candidates right now."

Romney did briefly refer to Iran and said President Barack Obama had not done enough to prevent that country from pursuing nuclear weapons. But his only mention of war was not Iraq or Afghanistan. It was World War II, and he used it as a way to frame his life story.

"I was born in the middle of the century in the middle of the country, a classic baby boomer," Romney said. "It was a time when Americans were returning from war and eager to work."

Conservative commentator William Kristol criticized Romney's decision.

"Leave aside the question of the political wisdom of Romney's silence, and the opportunities it opens up for President Obama next week," Kristol noted on his blog. "What about the civic propriety of a presidential nominee failing even to mention, in his acceptance speech, a war we're fighting and our young men and women who are fighting it?"

At no point was the incongruity more apparent than during Eastwood's unscripted speech. The renowned filmmaker suggested that invading Afghanistan was a foolhardy decision and teased Obama for it.

"You thought the war in Afghanistan was OK. You know, I mean, you thought that was something worth doing. We didn't check with the Russians to see how they did there for 10 years," Eastwood said to great laughter.

Then, talking about Obama's schedule for bringing troops home by the end of 2014, Eastwood said the sensible question was, "Why don't you just bring them home tomorrow morning?"

The quip earned him applause and cheers.

September Staycation | SilverTiger

Friday, August 31st 2012

Starting tomorrow, we are on holiday. (Yes, again!) This one will last from this Saturday until Sunday next week. Unfortunately, it will be interrupted by my follow-up follow-up at the clinic (see The follow-up or Nothing concluded), though I am sure we will take this calmly in our stride.

So where are we going and is Freya already languishing in her holiday camp in Chingford? To the second question, no, Freya is at this moment sitting beside her food bowl staring hopefully at me. She?s not going anywhere. The answer to the first question is both ?I?m not sure? and ?Oh, lots of places?. In other words, we our holidaying from home, going on day trips either in town or beyond as mood (and the weather) prompts us. A classic ?staycation?, in other words.

I am not sure at this stage whether I will save up my experiences and photos and write the blog posts afterwards (if I do this, it will take some time to complete as I still haven?t got into my stride in writing the blogs of our Glasgow trip) or whether I will put up temporary posts, as I did while we were in Glasgow. I think the temporary blogs were quite successful in their way so I may well try to do the same this time around. It will at least give you something to chew on until the finalized posts appear.

So there you have it: we are both going away and staying at home. It at least saves on the hotel bill?

More on all that anon.

WSJ: Amazon is building an ad-supported tablet Update: two Kindle Fire devices coming next week

WSJ: Amazon is building an ad-supported tablet

If you can't quite scrounge up the $200 it takes to buy a quality 7-inch slab these days, Amazon may have a solution for you: sell them your attention. According to the Wall Street Journal, the company plans to develop a ad-supported tablet that would display advertisements whenever the screen is turned on. Sound familiar? Like the ad-supported Kindle readers Amazon's already dabbled with, subsided tablets would ring in at a lower price tag then their ad-free counterparts. WSJ sources also mentioned that some versions of the device would be WiFi only, potentially lowering the price even further. No word yet, if you'll be able to buy yourself out of the ads later, of course.

Update: Care for a thicker plot? CNET is now reporting that Amazon will reveal two new Kindle Fire tablets next week -- an all new 7-inch wonder and a slightly reworked version of the original. While a brand new slab could be an obvious contender for the 7-inch tablet crown, a refreshed version of Amazon's original hardware could very well fit the ad-supported bill. Check out CNET's full report at the source link below.
