Kobo unveils the Kobo Arc powered by Android 4.0, prices starting at ?160

Android Central

Kobo has today officially unveiled their latest attempt at a 7-inch reading focused tablet, the Kobo Arc, which is the successor to last years Gingerbread powered Vox. The Kobo Arc is a much different proposition to the Vox, and will come running fully Google certified Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The Arc will also be reasonably well priced for a device of this nature, starting at just £159.99.

The Arc is more more design focused than the Vox, and packs more impressive hardware. Powering everything from within is a 1.5GHz dual-core TI OMAP processor, and 1GB of RAM. The 7-inch screen is a 1280x800 IPS panel with a pretty respectable PPI of 215. There's no rear camera on the Arc, but there is a front facing 720p HD 1.3MP camera and a microphone, so video conferencing is a definite possibility. Connectivity is WiFi only, but the Arc is WiFi Direct capable. Rounding out the hardware is a pair of stereo speakers on the front of the device, and in partnership with SRS home entertainment technology volume and sound quality is increased with the function turned on. Battery life is pegged at 10 hours of reading or watching videos with the WiFi off, with standby time of around 2 weeks.

So, the specs are nice. Not ground-breaking, but a definite mark up from the previous Vox. Hardware only tells half the tale though, it's in the software that Kobo is looking to be a little different to the norm. Kobo has designed their own custom interface that they call Tapestries, which is focused on organizing your content into easy to manage chunks -- or Tapestries. We got a look at the device, and the Tapestries interface back at IFA 2012 in Berlin, and it has some interesting features within.

The back story first though. Kobo has decided upon their design based around a principle of tablet use -- they're being used to consume content, be that books, videos, music etc. The UI of more traditional Android tablets is somewhat focused more around applications. Kobo wanted to focus on content, and so Tapestries was born. It's all about creating a personal experience on the Arc, and all about the users content.

As a content focused UI, applications are kept away from being front and center. Instead, the UI gives us a long scrolling wall to fill with content, and the main view shows off all your created Tapestries -- think of them as folders, but folders that open up a whole new home screen. Kobo has included some stock tapestries to organize some basic content such as reading, social media interactions, and entertainment, but the user can create one based around any kind of content they wish. App shortcuts and widgets are still usable as with traditional Android tablets, but it allows for total customization and organization of all your topic specific content.  And it was all developed in house by the Kobo team.

Kobo hasn't forgotten too their reading roots. Integrated into the web browser is a "distraction and ad free reading experience." By partnering with Readability, the Arc's web browser has a reading mode that will just show you the juicy text on a web page. The fonts used are all customized to look best on the Arc's display, and from within this view online content can be pinned to any Tapestry for reading later. It doesn't have offline capabilities however, so you will still need to be connected to WiFi.

The final area of the UI worth noting is the discover area occupying the bottom portion of the display. This learns about the content that you consume, and will start to make suggestions for you. It can even make suggestions based on topics contained within the text of a book. No personal information is given to any services, everything is managed in the cloud by Kobo.

Kobo's social reading features  from the Vox have also made their way on to the Arc. Pre-loaded apps include Facebook, Twitter, Skype, 7Digital and Rdio, along with the full suite of Google apps including the Play Store. It is expected to be available in November at £159.99 ($200) for the 8GB version, and £189.99 ($250) for the 16GB and will be available globally through existing Kobo retail partners. Black and white versions will be available, along with different colored interchangable rear covers.

Insurance program for cherry growers will expand ? Region ...

TRAVERSE CITY ? A program that offers crop insurance to cherry growers in two northern Michigan counties is expanding throughout the region in light of this year's disastrous cherry harvest.

And a movement is afoot to make crop insurance available to all cherry growers in Michigan by 2014.

A federal pilot program previously offered crop insurance to sweet cherry growers only in Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties. Last week, the program was expanded to five more northern counties ? Antrim, Benzie, Manistee, Mason and Oceana, said U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow.

"It's very important for our cherry growers going forward," said Stabenow, who chairs the U.S. Senate Agricultural Committee and lobbied for expansion of the program.

Tart cherry growers remain without any crop insurance coverage options. Stabenow said the U.S. Department of Agriculture is working on a "fast track" to make crop insurance programs available to all cherry farmers, sweet and tart, by 2014.

"It's big news," said Jim Bardenhagen, a Leelanau County fruit and vegetable grower who grows about 30 acres of cherries. "There's a lot of stress out there right now for growers."

Northern Michigan cherry growers are suffering through one of the worst crop harvests on record due to an unusually warm March followed by frosts that destroyed cherry blossoms. The USDA reports the tart cherry crop in 2012 was almost a complete loss, and losses of sweet cherries were estimated at 80 percent or higher.

"We harvested about 1 percent of the crop," said Suttons Bay cherry grower Don Gregory.

Gregory said he was encouraged by the movement to make crop insurance available to all cherry farmers. He said it's long overdue and gives fruit growers a risk management tool common among other farmers who grow wheat, corn and other traditional crops.

"We have not been able to provide ourselves with any kind of safety net," Gregory said. "It really becomes important working with lenders. You need to provide them with assurance that they are going to get some type of payment even in a year where you don't have a crop. It will improve the financing of growing cherries in northern Michigan."

Phil Korson of the Cherry Marketing Institute agrees. He said crop insurance for fruit growers protects the long-term interests of farming in northern Michigan ? particularly helping younger farmers manage risk.

"It's very important for the region and the people who live there," Korson said. "We can't control the weather and our producers didn't do anything wrong this year. We had a very unusual warm-up that set us up for a crop disaster."?

batholomew jungle: News and Society Blog-Economics: Is The US ...

This is a medical term used by hospital staff when a patient is beyond all hope of saving but is still alive, still clinging to the very last bit of life till it too is gone, and the patient slips quietly into death. They are no longer a part of this world and gone forever. Is this an accurate description of our economy right now in its present state of being. Has the real estate market hit bottom? How much longer can the federal reserve print money before our dollar is worth absolutely nothing? How much time do we have before our economy is severely effected by the reform of Petrodollar recycling, which would result in the ultimate collapse of the US dollar here in America and abroad. These are all questions investors want to know in today's uncertain economy.

According to The Wall Street Journal's, "Money Watch", a recent study has shown the housing market is slowly on the rise 7.5% over last year at this time. Interest rates have never been lower for financing single family housing. The only problem with this situation is that it really does not matter how low the interest rate is, if your worried about whether you will have a job from one day to the next. The result is that the average citizen is going to hold on to what ever money they have due to a lack of consumer confidence in an uncertain economy. People worried about jobs and the future don't spend money. They also don't spend money on consumer goods which further hurts our already stressed economy. What money they do spend on housing and consumer goods is getting even smaller due to shrinking value of our American dollar which has been quoted to be worth only 4 cents per dollar, thanks to the federal reserve banking system of America.

Every time, the federal reserve creates a need to print more money, it connects with the US Congress to make that happen. In the past, every dollar printed by the fed used to be backed by gold. This law was done away with in 1971. After that date, the federal reserve had a free reign to create money out of nothing and backed only by a promise to pay. The Fed will not account for what they do nor do they feel that they should. This what they believe as they control the cash flow of America's private citizens. Since they are a private company, and connected to the us congress, much information is withheld from the American public on their activities, intentions, and ownership of the federal reserve banking system. They are no more Federal than Federal Express. How is it that an independent company in the private sector has a hold on this country's finances without a transparent view of them by the American public and without accountability of any kind. They basically have a free reign to do what they want when they want it, which will bring this country down financially to its knees. This will not stop unless the federal reserve banking system is abolished, and our governing bodies are separated from the financial institutions of the private sector. In addition, corporations should not be allowed to contribute any monies to any political parties of any kind ever again.

Before the US dollar totally collapses, American citizens will only have to monitor of collapse of the "Petrodollar System, "which now is in the process of reforming negotiations with OPEC and other foreign nations. Their goal is to change the currency for buying oil from US dollars to Eros. First, one must understand the petrodollar system and how it works. For foreign countries to buy oil, they must first exchange their own currency for US dollars. That is what the US world leaders decided. Foreign countries in turn sell the US their products to get a higher rate of exchange for US dollars. All excess profits made by these countries are then recycled back into a US Federal Reserve Account. So as a result, the federal reserve is able to make major profits from the out going dollars to other countries and again when they recycle their excess profits back into private federal reserve accounts. This could also account for the secrecy of the owners of these accounts.

If OPEC and other foreign countries are successful in changing the currency for buying oil, the US dollar will no longer be needed. The Russian Securities Exchange recently opened direct trading between the Chinese currency, the Renminbi, and the Russian Ruble. Other smaller foreign nations are presently discussing switching to the Euro. At this point, two things will happen. The US will go to war(WWIII) to keep of oil and the mega profits they are making as a result of the petrodollar recycling process. They did it in Iraq when the Bush administration found out Saddam Hussein was in the process of changing the currency to gold for all Iraq's oil. The Bush administration put a stop to that by going to war to fight the so called war against terrorism, which was pure bullshit. They gave the same reasons for going to war with Afghanistan when they really wanted to secure the Caspian Oil Pipeline that extended through that country.

Every year the federal reserve must create debt in excess of the debt and interest of the previous year to keep the petrodollar system functioning. The results are clear. When debt is created, money is created. When debt is paid off, money is destroyed. There will never be enough to pay off the debt which leaves consumers stuck in a never ending rat race to keep up. So do not expect for things to get better. They will only get worse at this point and there is a reason for that. Its because the owners(1%) of this country want more for themselves and less for us (99%). So, their bottom line is their master and they do not give a dam about the American people, never have and never will. As long as the owners of this country have control of nation's money, they do not care who makes the laws.

Abolish The Federal Reserve Banking System of America. Our nation's leaders must push towards free energy and a sustainable way of life. If this sounds like the American dream, your right because you have to be asleep to believe it. If you are a firm believer that the US dollar will collapse, and it eventually will, call "Orange Blossom Note Services",at (512) 417-2933 and ask for Kenneth Kern. He can provide you with a fast reliable cash solution for any owner financed contract you want to sell. Why wait? Call now while there is still time.

35 years later, Voyager 1 is heading for the stars

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) ? Thirty-five years after leaving Earth, Voyager 1 is reaching for the stars.

Sooner or later, the workhorse spacecraft will bid adieu to the solar system and enter a new realm of space ? the first time a manmade object will have escaped to the other side.

Perhaps no one on Earth will relish the moment more than 76-year-old Ed Stone, who has toiled on the project from the start.

"We're anxious to get outside and find what's out there," he said.

When NASA's Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 first rocketed out of Earth's grip in 1977, no one knew how long they would live. Now, they are the longest-operating spacecraft in history and the most distant, at billions of miles from Earth but in different directions.

Wednesday marks the 35th anniversary of Voyager 1's launch to Jupiter and Saturn. It is now flitting around the fringes of the solar system, which is enveloped in a giant plasma bubble. This hot and turbulent area is created by a stream of charged particles from the sun.

Outside the bubble is a new frontier in the Milky Way ? the space between stars. Once it plows through, scientists expect a calmer environment by comparison.

When that would happen is anyone's guess. Voyager 1 is in uncharted celestial territory. One thing is clear: The boundary that separates the solar system and interstellar space is near, but it could take days, months or years to cross that milestone.

Voyager 1 is currently more than 11 billion miles from the sun. Twin Voyager 2, which celebrated its launch anniversary two weeks ago, trails behind at 9 billion miles from the sun.

They're still ticking despite being relics of the early Space Age.

Each only has 68 kilobytes of computer memory. To put that in perspective, the smallest iPod ? an 8-gigabyte iPod Nano ? is 100,000 times more powerful. Each also has an eight-track tape recorder. Today's spacecraft use digital memory.

The Voyagers' original goal was to tour Jupiter and Saturn, and they sent back postcards of Jupiter's big red spot and Saturn's glittery rings. They also beamed home a torrent of discoveries: erupting volcanoes on the Jupiter moon Io; hints of an ocean below the icy surface of Europa, another Jupiter moon; signs of methane rain on the Saturn moon Titan.

Voyager 2 then journeyed to Uranus and Neptune. It remains the only spacecraft to fly by these two outer planets. Voyager 1 used Saturn as a gravitational slingshot to catapult itself toward the edge of the solar system.

"Time after time, Voyager revealed unexpected ? kind of counterintuitive ? results, which means we have a lot to learn," said Stone, Voyager's chief scientist and a professor of physics at the California Institute of Technology.

These days, a handful of engineers diligently listen for the Voyagers from a satellite campus not far from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which built the spacecraft.

The control room, with its cubicles and carpeting, could be mistaken for an insurance office if not for a blue sign overhead that reads "Mission Controller" and a warning on a computer: "Voyager mission critical hardware. Please do not touch!"

There are no full-time scientists left on the mission, but 20 part-timers analyze the data streamed back. Since the spacecraft are so far out, it takes 17 hours for a radio signal from Voyager 1 to travel to Earth. For Voyager 2, it takes about 13 hours.

Cameras aboard the Voyagers were turned off long ago. The nuclear-powered spacecraft, about the size of a subcompact car, still have five instruments to study magnetic fields, cosmic rays and charged particles from the sun known as solar wind. They also carry gold-plated discs containing multilingual greetings, music and pictures ? in the off chance that intelligent species come across them.

Since 2004, Voyager 1 has been exploring a region in the bubble at the solar system's edge where the solar wind dramatically slows and heats up. Over the last several months, scientists have seen changes that suggest Voyager 1 is on the verge of crossing over.

When it does, it will be the first spacecraft to explore between the stars. Space observatories such as the Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes have long peered past the solar system, but they tend to focus on far-away galaxies.

As ambitious as the Voyager mission is, it was scaled down from a plan to send a quartet of spacecraft to Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto in what was billed as the "grand tour" of the solar system. But the plan was nixed, and scientists settled for the Voyager mission.

American University space policy expert Howard McCurdy said it turned out to be a boon.

They "took the funds and built spacecraft robust enough to visit all four gas giants and keep communicating" beyond the solar system, McCurdy said.

The double missions so far have cost $983 million in 1977 dollars, which translates to $3.7 billion now. The spacecraft have enough fuel to last until around 2020.

By that time, scientists hope Voyager will already be floating between the stars.

Newfound 'Tatooine' alien planet bodes well for E.T. search

The discovery of the first alien planet with two suns ? like the "Star Wars" world Tatooine ? residing in its parent star's habitable zone is good news for the search for life beyond Earth, scientists say.

The planet, known as Kepler-47c, is a gas giant and therefore probably not suitable for life as we know it. But its existence hints that smaller, rockier worlds may inhabit other two-star systems' habitable zones ?that just-right range of distances where liquid water can exist.

And that's important, because there are a lot of binary systems out there, scientists say.

"Roughly half of the stars in the galaxy are in binary systems," study lead author Jerome Orosz, of San Diego State University, told SPACE.com. "I thought it would only be a matter of time before we found a system like Kepler-47 where a planet is in the habitable zone." [Gallery: The Tatooine-Like Kepler-47 System]

The Kepler-47 system, whose discovery was announced Tuesday (Aug. 28), dwells about 5,000 light-years away, in the constellation Cygnus (The Swan). It is a close binary system, with two stars orbiting near each other at its center. Around these stars whirl two planets known as Kepler-47b and Kepler-47c.

They make Kepler-47 the first system seen with multiple worlds circling a pair of stars.

"If single stars and close binary stars can host planetary systems with an equal probability ? that is not at all clear at the moment ? then it would follow that life could be just as common on circumbinary planets as on planets with single stars," Orosz said.

Kepler-47c, which appears to be slightly larger than Uranus, is the outer world. It takes the planet 303 days to complete an orbit, placing it squarely in the system's habitable zone. (Kepler-47b is a bit smaller than its planetary sibling but much closer-in, making it likely too hot to host life.)

Kepler-47c itself is likely not a good bet to support life. But any large moons of the planet ? if they exist ? would be very intriguing to astrobiologists, said study co-author William Welsh at San Diego State University.

Scientists have already found several exoplanets that are Earth-size or smaller, and they hope to discover many more. NASA's prolific Kepler space telescope, which discovered Kepler-47b and c, is a key tool in this search.

Indeed, Kepler's main mission is to determine just how commonly Earth-size planets occur in their stars' habitable zones throughout the galaxy. The telescope detects alien planets by flagging the telltale brightness dips caused when they cross in front of, or transit, their stars' faces from the instrument's perspective..

"I expect that the transits of an Earth-sized planet will be very hard to spot by eye, so we will need to refine our automated search programs to work for binary systems," Orosz said. "As Kepler gets more and more data, the chances go up that we can identify the smaller transits due to terrestrial planets."

The scientists published their findings online Aug. 28 in the journal Science. They also detailed their results Aug. 29 at the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union in Beijing.

Any Person Can Develop And Use Lucid ... - Critical Care 2011

Everybody dreams each and every night regardless of whether they know it or not. Some people swear that they never ever dream, however the reality is that they do. Those who believe they do not dream simply aren?t remembering their dreams. It is crucial to know that everybody not just dreams, but all of us have the potential to vastly boost the quantity of dreams we experience. There?s a special class of dreams known as lucid dreams, and you will find lucid dreaming techniques which can enable you to trigger this special encounter at will.

To be clear ? a lucid dream is a dream in which the dreamer is aware that he or she is dreaming. This can be occasionally named ?coming awake inside a dream? in some cases it occurs spontaneously. No doubt, some of you reading this at this time have most likely experienced at the least one lucid dream at some time in your life.

In case you have experienced a lucid dream, you realize what a wonderful experience it can be! As an example, let?s say you happen to be having a dream which you are flying among the clouds Superman style ? no airplane necessary inside the dream world! Suddenly, you recognize that you are dreaming! You now will not be only soaring through the air like a bird, but have the option of exactly where you would like to fly next!

In the lucid dream world, the sky is literally the limit. But wait! Even the sky isn?t the limit inside the dream world. In the event you can induce a lucid dream and take control, it is possible to do absolutely anything ? fly to Mars, travel the Universe, date a movie star, drive a tank ? anything!

But how do you do it? How do you create the capability to enter the lucid dream state at will? HOW YOU DO IT

The initial step toward raising your capability to control your dreams is always to learn to have much more dreams, and recall them better. The most beneficial approach to do that is to keep a dream journal. Each night just before you go to sleep, set a notepad and pen by your bed. Tell yourself that you will awaken numerous times a night to write down your dreams. Or, you may just write down what you remember very first thing in the morning.

The moment you develop the ability to dream much more vividly and frequently, you?re prepared to go to the next level ? learning lucid dreaming methods!

M.I.L.D.

One of the most effective lucid dream induction procedures is known as MILD, which stands for Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams. MILD is designed for beginners. It is a four-step procedure, and we?ve already talked in regards to the first ? learning to recall far more dreams.

After you have achieved that, the following step will be to carry out some thing referred to as a ?reality check? numerous times a day. The concept would be to, several times every day, just stop what you are doing and ask your self: ?Am I dreaming at the moment?? Of course, most of the time you are going to be awake, so you are going to swiftly answer, ?No! I am awake!?

But after you get in to the habit of frequently checking on your state of reality, you?ll often start undertaking the same thing inside your dreams as well. Sooner or later, you are going to be dreaming, you will carry out a reality check, and you will realize: ?Hey! I am dreaming!?

The following step in MILD would be to carry out lucidity affirmations. This is merely telling yourself as you prepare for sleep that you will remember to realize that you simply are dreaming, and to ?come awake? within your dream. You ought to repeat these affirmations quite a few times as you fall asleep. Just keep reminding your self: ?Tonight I?ll remember that I?m dreaming, and that I can become aware of my dreaming state.? You may also say things like, ?Tonight, I?ll lucid dream.? Repeat this several times.

The final step in MILD is to visualize the kind of dream you wish to have. For example, let?s say you want to have a dream about walking on the surface of the moon. Just use your imagination to play the scene out in your mind. Make your visualization as vivid and genuine as possible ? and try to hold it inside your mind as you drift off to sleep.

MILD is just one of several lucid dreaming techniques. A terrific resource to discover more is the Lucidity Institute, which you?ll be able to find on-line for a lot more suggestions and instruction learning the ability of lucid dreaming.
