Crows can 'reason' about causes

Tool-making crows have the ability to "reason", say scientists.

In an experiment, researchers found that crows were more likely to forage when they could attribute changes in their environment to a human presence.

This behaviour may suggest "complex cognition", according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Until now the ability to make inferences based on causes has been attributed to humans but not animals.

The study was a collaboration between researchers from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, the University of Cambridge, UK and the University of Vienna, Austria.

In their experiment eight wild crows used tools to remove food from a box.

Inside the enclosure there was a stick and the crows were tested in two separate series of events that both involved the stick moving.

In one instance a human entered the hide and the stick moved. In the other, the stick still moved but no human entered.

On the occasions when no human was observed entering the hide, the crows abandoned their efforts to probe for food using a tool more frequently than they did when a human had been observed.

According to the scientists, the study proved that crows attributed the stick's movement to human presence.

The results indicated that neither age nor sex was a predictor of the behaviour with juveniles, males and females displaying the same behaviour.

Scientists said that the kind of "reasoned inference" shown by the New Caledonian crows under these controlled conditions could also be utilised in the wild to anticipate danger or food.

The study is the first to suggest that animals have the ability to make reasoned inferences, although scientists added that the phenomenon could be more common among animals than previously thought.

SHREWSBURY, MA A new article published today in International Journal of Obesity found there is no evidence to suggest the current obesity epidemic in the United States can be specifically blamed on consumption of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).

The commentary concludes that after an extensive review of all available HFCS research, there is overwhelming evidence showing HFCS is nutritionally equivalent to sugar. This opinion is in-line with the American Medical Association and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, both of which concluded that HFCS is not a unique cause of obesity.

The authors state that while there has been a large amount of debate in the media about the impact of HFCS on obesity levels, the fact is "Sucrose (sugar) and HFCS are very similar in composition.and are absorbed identically in the human GI tract."

"The public discussion about HFCS will likely continue to rage on and more studies will be conducted," said James M. Rippe, M.D., Founder and Director of the Rippe Lifestyle Institute, and Professor of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Central Florida, one of the article's authors. "However, at this point there is simply no evidence to suggest that the use of HFCS alone is directly responsible for increased obesity rates or other health concerns."

The article goes on to discuss a number of research trials that have been conducted on the issue of HFCS and obesity, and concludes that at this time the evidence shows no short-term health differences between the use of HFCS or sugar could be detected in humans. Weight gain, glucose levels, insulin and appetite were not adversely affected by the use HFCS over sugar.

The commentary was co-authored with Dr. Rippe by David M. Klurfeld, Ph.D. of the USDA Agricultural Research Service, John Foreyt, Ph.D. of Baylor College of Medicine, and Theodore J. Angelopoulos, Ph.D., MPH Professor and Director, Laboratory of Applied Physiology Department of Health Professions at University of Central Florida.

HFCS was developed in the mid-1960's as a more flexible alternative to sugar and was widely embraced by the food industry. The use of HFCS grew rapidly from 1970-1999 where usage peaked. Since 1999, the use of HFCS has declined while obesity rates have continued to rise. Sucrose is still the dominant sweetener worldwide with over nine times the consumption of HFCS.

GENWI Nabs $2M From Mike Maples, Roger McNamee To Help Publishers Go Mobile

GENWIDailyW_ArticleWhile magazines and newspapers have slowly made the transition from print to digital, they're still coming to grips with mobile. For publications (big and small) to survive amidst the industry's declining ad revenues, it's imperative for publishers to be able to push their content on every available platform, particularly tablets, the device that's really best suited to consuming digital content. Founded in 2010, GENWI has developed a cloud publishing solution and mobile Content Management System (mCMS) that gives publishers an easy way to re-purpose their content and create engaging mobile apps. The startup's platform provides templates and tools that make it easy for both small and enterprise publishers to customize both native and HTML5 apps and push their content out across those devices. Based on this functionality, the platform has attracted publishers like Conde Nast, IndiaTimes, Forbes, PBS Kids and The Hollywood Reporter, and is today receiving further validation of its model from Mike Maples and Roger McNamee, who are investing $2 million in the startup, bringing its total funding to $7.1 million.

Assessing a new technique for ensuring fresh produce remains Salmonella-free

Researchers at the Institute of Food Research have tested a new technique to ensure fresh produce is free of bacterial contamination.

Plasmas are a mix of highly energetic particles created when gases are excited by an energy source. They can be used to destroy bacteria but as new research shows, some can hide from its effects in the microscopic surface structures of different foods.

Eating fresh fruit and vegetables is promoted as part of a healthy lifestyle, and consumers are responding to this by eating more and in a greater variety. Ensuring fruit and vegetables are free from contamination by food poisoning bacteria is crucial, as they are often eaten raw, without cooking or processing that kills off bacteria.

A move away from current chlorine-based decontamination is driving the search for new, safe ways of ensuring fresh fruit and vegetables are free from bacterial contamination without reducing quality or flavour. One technique being investigated is cold atmospheric gas plasma technology.

Plasmas can effectively inactivate microorganisms, and as they don't involve extreme conditions such as high temperature they have been suggested for use in decontaminating food surfaces without affecting the structure. Dr Arthur Thompson has been investigating how well cold atmospheric plasmas (CAP) inactivate Salmonella under different conditions and on different fresh produce foods at the Institute of Food Research, which is strategically funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.

Publishing in the journal Food Microbiology, Dr Thompson found Salmonella could be effectively inactivated by plasmas, but the length of exposure varied greatly depending on the type of produce. Other variables, such as the ambient temperature of the produce or the growth phase of the Salmonella had no significant effect. Inactivation on food surfaces took longer than on an artificial membrane filter surface.

To understand why, the researchers looked at the food surfaces with an electron microscope. At this microscopic level of detail, it was possible to see how Salmonella could 'hide' from the effects of the plasmas. Different structures, such as the bumps on the strawberries, the pores in lettuce leaves or the cell walls of potatoes create shadowed zones that block plasma reaching bacteria.

This study was conducted using a laboratory scale plasma device, used as part of ongoing research at IFR to study operational parameters and investigate precisely how cold plasma's destroy bacteria.

"The results suggest scaled up devices or combinations with other mild treatments could provide a very effective solution for destroying bacteria with little or no effect on the produce itself." said Dr Thompson. "What this study shows is that it will be important to take into account the type of food and its surface structure."

Real Madrid in real mess

By JOSEPH WILSON

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:35 a.m. ET Sept. 16, 2012

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -After dominating the Spanish league last season, defending champion Real Madrid was supposed to brush aside its lesser domestic rivals in this campaign and focus on winning a coveted 10th Champions League trophy.

But after losing its second league match 1-0 at Sevilla on Saturday, Madrid is reeling only two days before facing Manchester City in the Champions League.

Coach Jose Mourinho says he "doesn't have a team," forward Cristiano Ronaldo is "sad," and the entire club is wondering what has so quickly gone so wrong.

Through four rounds, Madrid has just one win to go with a draw and a pair of losses and already trails pacesetter Barcelona by eight points as it languishes in the middle of the standings.

Mourinho has to find a quick turnaround as Madrid plays English titleholder Manchester City on Tuesday in their Champions league opener, a game that it can ill afford to lose in a challenging group that includes German champion Borussia Dortmund and Dutch team Ajax.

"We didn't expect to have this start," said Madrid club spokesman and former star Emilio Butragueno. "(Eight points) are a lot of points. We have a very important game on Tuesday. It's critical."

In his first two seasons at Madrid, Mourinho rarely blamed his players for a bad result. But he has been openly critical of his squad from week one when it slipped to a home draw with Valencia.

After its loss at Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium on Saturday he was brutal in his judgment of his team's effort, saying that for many of his players "football is not a priority."

"I am worried because since the beginning of the season we have only played well in the Spanish Supercup (vs. Barcelona), but nothing else," said Mourinho, whose team hadn't dropped this many points until week 15 last season.

"More than being worried about the points, what worries me at this moment is that I don't have a team."

Madrid-friendly Spanish sports daily Marca's cover on Sunday read: "Eight points from Barca in week four, Mou declares a state of alarm in Madrid."

Barcelona, meanwhile, remained perfect through four games after Lionel Messi scored a brace to take his league-leading tally to six goals in its 4-1 rout at Getafe on Saturday.

"The gap (with Madrid) is surprising," said Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets on Sunday. "But there is still a long way to go."

Mourinho said Madrid's poor form predated Ronaldo's enigmatic comments two weeks ago that he wasn't happy with the Spanish club, sparking speculation that he was seeking a better contract or even a move to another team.

"This game wasn't very different from the other games," Mourinho said after the defeat in Seville. "Therefore I don't think it has any relation with the rumor of the last two weeks."

Either way, Ronaldo was key to Madrid's title fight last season with a club-record 46 league goals. So far this season he has scored two, both coming against the modest Granada at home when he showed his displeasure with the club by not celebrating his goals.

To Mourinho's chagrin, Madrid has proven to be particularly vulnerable on set pieces, despite having physical defenders like Sergio Ramos and Pepe along with imposing midfielders in Sami Khedira and Xabi Alonso.

Madrid left Sevilla midfielder Piotr Trochowski unmarked to blast a corner kick into the top of the net two minutes into Saturday's match, and then failed to mount a comeback. In previous rounds, Madrid conceded goals off set pieces in its 1-1 draw with Valencia and its 2-1 loss at Getafe.

"The problem is the attitude from minute one," a perplexed Mourinho said. "We cannot work more on set pieces. Every player knows his role, the opponent he has to mark, the zone he has to cover, and yet we concede a goal just a minute into the game. It is an image of a team without focus or a willingness to suffer."

Ramos did not dare contradict his coach's opinion.

"(Mourinho) is the best at seeing football. It is true that the moment has arrived to look at what we can improve and what things we need to change," he said. "It is time to change our attitude."
