AT&T and IBM Create Breakthrough Global Cloud Service for ...

DALLAS?and?ARMONK, NY,?Oct. 9, 2012?/PRNewswire/ ??AT&T* (NYSE:?T) and IBM (NYSE:?IBM) today announced a business agreement to deliver a highly secure, first-of-its-kind ?network-enabled??cloud service?that uses private networks rather than the public Internet.

The companies are combining AT&T virtual private networking and IBM SmartCloud Enterprise+ cloud capabilities with breakthrough technology from AT&T Labs to create a new, fast and highly-secure shared cloud service. Targeted to Fortune 1000 companies globally, the service will be offered in early 2013 as a powerful new option for clients who are deploying cloud solutions that demand high levels of security and availability. Many businesses often cite security as a key inhibitor to cloud computing adoption.

When customers of the new service connect to IBM cloud computing resources across AT&T?s?virtual private network, the innovative technology tightly integrates the security protections of both, allowing customers to quickly and reliably shift information or applications between their own data centers (private clouds) and this new cloud service. This is critical for businesses that want the flexibility of the cloud but also need to protect applications and data as they move between data centers and wired or wireless computing devices such as tablets, smartphones, personal computers, retail kiosks or other?machine-to-machine?devices.

For example, a financial services company using the new service could move and manage critical customer data between its and IBM?s cloud data centers without the data ever leaving the security protections of the virtual private network.

AT&T?s breakthrough technology dynamically allocates networking resources to computing resources, automating functions that are often performed manually. This allows the network and compute resources to rapidly scale or contract in tandem to support the fluctuating demand on systems that an online retailer might experience before, during and after the holiday buying season; or that a large employer might experience before, during, and after their annual employee health benefits enrollment period.

?AT&T and IBM are delivering a new, network-enabled cloud service that marries the security and speed of?AT&T?s global network?with the control and management capabilities of IBM?s enterprise cloud,? said?Andy Geisse, CEO of AT&T Business Solutions. ?This new service gives companies yet another way to innovate, create new value, and transform their businesses and industries.?

A key element of the cloud service is?IBM SmartCloud Enterprise+, an IBM Infrastructure-as-a-Service optimized for mission-critical, enterprise workloads. As a managed and hosted cloud environment, it offers many advantages of a private cloud ? such as choice of dedicated physical servers and storage ? but also adds the scalable flexibility of a public cloud. Customers using the new service will have access to IBM SmartCloud Enterprise+? s broad spectrum of secure managed services and be able to run processes in both public and private cloud models.

?As more organizations realize that cloud can be secure, easily managed, and a key part of their business strategy, cloud will quickly evolve as a tool for innovation rather than just for infrastructure,? said?Erich Clementi, senior vice president, IBM Global Technology Services. ?We believe this new service from two recognized leaders in cloud computing provides a compelling way for large organizations to exploit cloud?s transformational power.?

Other features of the new cloud service include:

  • A variety of customization options to meet specific customer needs;
  • Committed service-level agreements (SLAs) aligned to business and usage requirements to increase accountability for response time and availability;
  • More than 70 automated built-in security functions; and
  • High levels of security extended to wired and wireless devices authenticated to the customer?s virtual private network.

All of the Fortune 1000 companies are currently customers of AT&T.

Financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.

LG Optimus L9 for T-Mobile hands-on (update: video)

LG Optimus L9 for TMobile handson

Just a day after it announced the LG Optimus L9, T-Mobile showed the smartphone off at MobileCon 2012. It's definitely a worthy member of the L-series of stylish (yet mid-range) handsets, sporting the same signature look and feel that the Korean manufacturer has taken to heart over the past few months. The device features a 4.5-inch qHD display, 2,150mAh battery, 1GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4430 processor with 1GB RAM, Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), 5MP rear camera with 1080p video recording capability, Gorilla Glass 2, 4GB internal storage and external storage capacity and support for the usual T-Mobile HSPA+ radios. Power users may not have a lot of love or appreciation for this device, given its rather mediocre processor compared to the rest of the giants on the market today. In our brief time using the L9, we witnessed a few bouts of lag, though we won't take too much of that seriously for now since this isn't the final retail product. But it feels comfortable in the hand, well-built and boasting the same leathery-textured battery cover as most of LG's recent phones. Check out our collection of images below then hit the break for our hands-on video!

(AP) ? NATO is ready to defend alliance member Turkey amid artillery exchanges along its tense southeastern border with Syria, its top official said Tuesday.

Turkey and Syria have exchanged mortar and cannon fire across their common border since errant Syrian shells killed five Turkish civilians last week, sparking fears of a wider regional crisis.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen backed Turkey's right to defend itself.

"I would add to that that obviously Turkey can rely on NATO solidarity, we have all necessary plans in place to protect and defend Turkey if necessary," he said ahead of a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels.

NATO nations expressed solidarity with Turkey after errant Syrian shells killed five Turkish civilians last week. But analysts say the alliance is reluctant to involve itself militarily in another conflict at a time when its main priority is the war in Afghanistan and the handover of responsibility for security to Afghan government forces.

"We hope that all parties involved (in the Syrian crisis) will show restrain, and avoid an escalation of the crisis," Fogh Rasmussen said. "I do believe that the right way forward in Syria is political solution."

Fogh Rasmussen's comments came as the Dogan agency quoted unidentified military sources as saying that at least 25 additional F-16 fighter jets were deployed at Turkey's Diyarbakir air base in the southeast late Monday.

The Turkish military's chief of staff inspected troops along the border with Syria on Tuesday.

The move is also seen as bolstering Turkish forces along the Iraqi border. Turkish jets struck Kurdish rebel targets in two separate cross-border raids in northern Iraq on Sunday despite warnings from Baghdad.

(AP) ? The St. Louis Cardinals enjoyed a typical high-output day against Jordan Zimmermann. The bats came alive when they needed it most.

Allen Craig and Daniel Descalso homered early to build a nice cushion and Carlos Beltran added two long shots in a 12-4 rout over the Washington Nationals on Monday night that evened the best-of-five series at a game apiece.

"If we get things going, we feel like we can carry the team," Craig said. "As you saw tonight, we put a lot of good swings on the ball and really drove the ball. It was a lot of fun."

The Cardinals chased Zimmermann after three innings, his shortest outing of the season, and took care of business in what could be the final home game of the season. A day after managing just three hits, there was no carry-over.

"You've got to be confident," third baseman David Freese said. "We're one of the few teams left. They still think they can take the series, and so do we."

Johnson said Zimmermann, pitching on eight days' rest, relied too heavily on outside fastballs that the Cardinals were able to time. The right-hander's next-shortest outing this year also was against the Cardinals, when he coughed up a four-run, first-inning cushion and was chased after yielding eight runs in 3 2-3 innings during a 10-9 loss at home.

He's 0-2 with a 9.45 ERA in five career regular-season starts against St. Louis, which was 3 for 5 with runners in scoring position against a pitcher who led the majors in holding opponents to a .160 average in that category.

The Cardinals had more than enough to compensate for a two-inning start from an ailing Jaime Garcia, who had an MRI exam for a shoulder injury. The lefty missed two months with shoulder fatigue during the season.

"I don't know how it happened, I don't know when it happened," Garcia said. "I'm just hoping it's not too bad."

Ryan Zimmerman and Adam LaRoche hit consecutive homers in the fifth for the Nationals, who head home for the remainder of the series. The NL East champions are without All-Star ace Stephen Strasburg, shut down for the rest of the season early last month to protect his surgically repaired arm.

"I miss him not experiencing this with us and he misses not experiencing it with us," Nationals manager Davey Johnson said. "But we did the right thing, there's no question.

"He'd have been the guy that opened the series."

Game 3 is Wednesday afternoon at Nationals Park, the first postseason contest in the nation's capital since the original Senators played the New York Giants in the 1933 World Series. Edwin Jackson starts for Washington against longtime Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter, who made only three starts during the regular season because of injury.

"You hate to get blown out, but you get walked off, it probably hurts a little bit more," the Nationals' Jayson Werth said. "The game was out of reach for a while.

"No big deal, a loss is a loss. We'll head home and feel good about it."

Jackson pitched on the Cardinals' World Series title team last fall before signing a free-agent deal with Washington.

"Having E-Jax on the bump is going to be great for us," Nationals 19-year-old rookie Bryce Harper said. "He's unbelievable in the postseason, unbelievable in the playoffs. The Cardinals know that.

"Facing Carpenter is going to be tough for us but playing at home will be a lot of fun."

Beltran homered twice in the postseason for the third time in his career, connecting in the sixth off Mike Gonzalez and eighth off Sean Burnett. Jon Jay had two hits and three RBIs, plus an outstanding catch at the center-field wall to deprive Danny Espinosa of extra bases in the sixth.

St. Louis was 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position during Game 1 and totaled just three hits, but the Cardinals had five hits in a four-run second Monday. Descalso hit his first postseason homer in the fourth, a day after getting robbed by Werth's leaping catch at the right-field wall. Beltran's drive off Gonzalez in the sixth banged off the facade in the third deck in left, estimated at 444 feet.

"I hope I never see this offense again," Johnson said in the postgame interview room.

Shadows creeped past the pitcher's mound around the third inning and didn't seem to be as big of an issue in Game 2, which started 1? hours later than the opener. Both teams had issues with the playing conditions after the opener.

Late last season, after complaints from Albert Pujols and Lance Berkman, the Cardinals said they'd try not to schedule late afternoon games that might be affected.

Harper went 1 for 5 and struck out four times. He also was thrown out at third base on an ill-advised attempt to advance. He's 1 for 10 in the series with six strikeouts.

"Do I look overanxious? You think so?" Harper said to a reporter. "Maybe you should be a hitting coach."

Lance Lynn, an 18-game winner who would likely replace Garcia in the rotation, struck out five in a three-inning stint marred by the consecutive homers.

St. Louis opened the second with four straight hits, singles by Craig and Yadier Molina that set the table followed by an RBI double from Freese and a run-scoring single from Descalso. After the Cardinals went down in order in the first, seven of their next 11 hitters reached safely.

"They have a great lineup," Zimmermann said. "You get a few guys out and then you've got Beltran, (David) Freese and it never stops. You have to make your pitches and I wasn't able to do that tonight."

NOTES: Cardinals RHP Jake Westbrook, rehabbing from a pulled oblique, will leave the team for a few days to be with his wife, due to deliver the couple's fourth child. GM John Mozeliak said it's "not likely" that Westbrook, a 13-game winner, will be able to pitch this fall. ... Beltran has 13 career postseason homers. His last two-homer game in the postseason was Oct. 15, 2006, with the Mets against St. Louis in the NLCS. ... The Cardinals matched the franchise high for runs in a division series game. They also scored 12 in 2002 against Arizona.

Andiamo in Charlestown Has Apparently Closed | Boston ...

It looks like a takeout restaurant and caterer in Charlestown has closed its doors.

According to a poster on the Chowhound site, Andiamo in the City Square section of this Boston neighborhood is shuttered. A call to the place seems to confirm this, as their phone is no longer in service, and a check on their website shows that it is down.

Andiamo first opened in the summer of 2011, offering mostly Italian items such as pizza and pasta dishes, with one feature being the "faux home-chef" option, which let customers take their food with them in Pyrex dishes. The eatery was part of the Legendary Restaurant Group, which operates Papagayo Mexican Kitchen and Bar, Scollay Square, Tavern on the Water in Charlestown, Max and Dylan's, Sip, and Avery Provision Co.

The address for this dining spot in Charlestown was: Andiamo, 100 City Square, Charlestown, MA, 02129.

Are Blue Cross And Blue Shield's Childhood Obesity PSAs Smart Or ...

In an effort to help combat rising obesity rates in Minnesota, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota recently released two public service announcements (PSAs) focusing on how adult behaviors and choices affect kids. Since the videos were released, there?s been a slew of?criticism?tossed at Blue Cross and Blue Shield for ?shaming overweight people.? One YouTube viewer notes, ?Shame on you BCBS for continuing the thought process that shaming people is healthy and appropriate.??Others like the ads. For example, another YouTube viewer points out, ?I see nothing offensive about this ad. Sometimes we make decisions and we don?t think about the effect they have on the younger ones.??Marc Manley, the vice president and chief prevention officer of?Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota makes no?apologies?for the ads, telling NPR that he was ?Very involved with the creation and messaging behind the ads? and that the intent was to create ads that, ?Show good parents having moments of realization that they needed to change their own behavior in order to send the right message to their kid.?

All over the Internet people have taken sides over the anti-obesity ads. Keep reading to see where people stand and to see some important statistics about obesity in the USA.

This isn?t the first time we?ve seen debates like this. Last year?Children?s Healthcare of Atlanta kicked off a grim, yet realistic and highly controversial anti-obesity campaign Strong4Life?that included billboards and commercials.?About 700 mom and dad bloggers, fitness professionals, Registered Dietitians, doctors and other individuals called the ads shaming, put up a huge fight and rallied together to end the campaign -?and they succeeded. Strong4Life took down their billboards and created more?neutral messages?about how parents can talk to their kids about weight, exercise and food choices. The end of the?campaign?wasn?t met with total joy though. Many felt the ads did make a difference ? including Maya Walters, a teenager with high blood pressure who appeared in one of the ads. Walters told the Atlantic Journal-Constitution, ??I think it?s really brave to talk about the elephant in the room.?It?s very provocative and makes people uncomfortable, but it?s when people are uncomfortable that change comes.?

Children?s Healthcare, who created the ads were happy with their results in spite of the ads being taken down. ?Linda Matzigkeit, a senior vice president at Children?s Healthcare noted,??In the end, I think people are saying it really is time for a wake-up call. It?s not good for business if your state has the second-highest obesity rate.? Matzigkeit also points out that?Children?s Healthcare commonly sees children with heart disease and diabetes, or who need knee replacements, all due to excess weight. On top of this, when the Strong4Life?campaign was tested, Matzigkeit said 85% of those who saw the ads said the approach seemed appropriate. Plus, and this is key, Trust for America?s Health research shows that after?Strong4Life launched, ?Georgia?s?obesity rate?dropped from 28.7% to 28%, a small but very significant shift.

Vice presidential debate could be a tale of two Ryans

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Reuters) - Republican Congressman Paul Ryan is a changed man. Presidential candidate Mitt Romney's running mate made a name for himself as a bold fiscal crusader, willing to make big, unpopular cuts to entitlements to get U.S. finances in order.

But since Romney tapped him in August to join his campaign, the vice presidential candidate has become more prudent, avoiding detailed discussion of his budget plan and earning the nickname "mini-Mitt" for displaying a cautious streak like his boss.

For Vice President Joe Biden, a major question heading into his debate with Ryan in Kentucky on Thursday is "a choice of which Ryan we're going to see," a Biden adviser said.

Instead of promoting his own budget plan, which includes caps on future Medicare spending, Ryan is talking up Romney's more voter-friendly version, which has no spending limits, at campaign events.

"The vice president has been studying up on (Ryan's) real positions and is prepared to call him out on his actual positions," said the adviser, who warned that "maybe there will be some dishonesty," from the Republican.

The stakes are high for Biden, who is charged with righting a listing ship after President Barack Obama's disastrous first debate against Romney in Denver last week, which lost him the momentum in polls ahead of the November 6 election.

Democrats have targeted Ryan's budget, a severe series of spending cuts, as proof that he would hurt seniors and the middle class.

One top Republican strategist said the best way for Biden to battle his opponent is to tease out the "wonky" Ryan, the congressman who loves mind-numbing fiscal details.

"If I was prepping against Ryan, I would be looking for issues that Romney and Ryan disagree on and try and pull out Ryan the wonk, as opposed to Ryan the running mate," the strategist said.

That would turn off television viewers not used to detailed policy arguments, and could give Biden a chance to paint the Republican team as holding different positions on Medicare.

The Romney campaign has worked overtime to emphasize that House Budget Committee chairman Ryan has fallen in line with the presidential candidate on fiscal issues.

"You have to remember this is a Romney-Ryan ticket, and there's one presidential candidate, there's one person at the top of the ticket," Romney spokesman Kevin Madden told reporters on Tuesday.

NO RYAN DOCTRINE

An image of Ryan as a congenial Midwesterner rather than a congressional budget hawk has been enhanced on the campaign trail, where he has worked to build a reputation for an easy manner with voters.

Much was made in the media of Ryan cutting short an interview this week with a local television reporter whose questions he did not like, but the Wisconsin congressman was in good spirits immediately after the interview, and did not storm off as was suggested.

Economic issues aside, Ryan is clearly taking his lead from Romney on foreign policy, a weak spot for the 42-year-old congressman against Biden, who spent more than 10 years on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

In Ohio on Monday, Ryan echoed much of the language and themes that the former Massachusetts governor laid out in an attack on Obama's handling of world events during a speech at the Virginia Military Institute.

"The president is not offering the kind of spirited and principled leadership we need to create jobs here at home or to keep us safe," Ryan said.

At a rally, he pressed home criticism of Obama over the killing of four Americans in Libya, a favorite foreign policy attack line of Romney.

Ryan told voters to just turn on their televisions: "You will likely see the failures of the Obama foreign policy unfolding before our eyes," Ryan said. "You see if you look around the world, what we are witnessing is the unraveling of the Obama foreign policy."

Leading up to Thursday's debate, Ryan retreated to Florida to prepare, spending Tuesday morning focused on policy briefings before switching to debate prep.

Ryan aides in recent days have begun the typical campaign ritual of playing up your opponent before a debate, portraying Biden as a seasoned professional.

"Vice President Biden has done 18 presidential or VP debates over the years - 14 in 2008," said one Ryan aide. "He's always a focused debater. It's not a setting in which he makes gaffes."

Brendan Buck, a Ryan spokesman, noted that Thursday night will be Ryan's "first time on the big stage."

"After the president's performance last week, we know Joe Biden will (be) coming at us like a cannonball," Buck said.
