This weekend?s column. Peruse and comment.

? Religion replaced by civil society ? George Pyle | The Salt Lake Tribune

... A Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life survey puts the number of Americans who follow no organized religion at nearly 20 percent of the adult population, and growing. For the first time in American history, mainline Protestant churches claim the loyalty of less than half of us.

Following no organized religion does not mean that individuals do not believe in God, or a higher power. It just means they are compelled to define and follow that power on their own, being responsible for their own decisions, not outsourcing their thinking to any Earthly leader. And that should make democracy easier, not harder.

When no single religion is in a superior position of power, participants in a democracy must find another common language, the language of civil society, in which to converse. Preferred policies must be argued in terms of rational facts, because no one can simply claim it is God?s will and shut down the conversation.

Think it won?t work? It worked for Martin Luther King Jr. Yes, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., best known for his I Have A Dream Speech, 99 percent of which could have been embraced, even delivered, by the staunchest of atheists. Because it was all about America?s civil creed of equality and freedom. Because it was about man?s laws, not God?s. Because we, not our religions, are responsible for the choices we make. Or, in the case of the Pakistani Taliban, the little girls we shoot. ...

? Rise of ?nones? huge change ? Scranton Times-Tribune

... For the nation the trend is a step into historically uncharted territory that might leave voids in society beyond diminished religious practice itself.

Chicago schools chief out after run-ins with Mayor Rahm Emanuel

Chicago schools chief Jean-Claude Brizard, recruited just 17 months ago by Rahm Emanuel, is stepping down nearly four weeks after the teachers strike. He reportedly infuriated the mayor.

By Mark Guarino,?Staff writer / October 12, 2012

Nearly four weeks since the end of the first teachers strike in 25 years, and 17 months after being recruited from Rochester, N.Y., by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel in May 2011, Chicago Public Schools CEO Jean-Claude Brizard is stepping down.

Mr. Brizard?s resignation, announced in a statement released early Friday, highlights the difficulties school administrators face in the Chicago system, where school officials are more directly answerable to City Hall and vulnerable to the political pressures on the mayor.

Unlike previous administrators of what is the nation?s third largest public school system, Brizard was touted as an educator first and a business administrator second. His battle scars earned by dealing with a teachers union in his previous job showed Mayor Emanuel that Brizard had similar mettle for dealing with contentious labor issues in Chicago.

Brizard also believed in many of the reforms Emanuel wanted to implement, such as pushing forward more charter schools, closing underperforming schools, and establishing pay grades based on teacher performance and not seniority.

But Brizard was largely absent from view during last month?s strike, a combative standoff that left Emanuel vulnerable to criticism by voices on both the political right and left. Brizard reportedly infuriated Emanuel by taking a vacation in the days leading up to the strike, and his absence from the public eye during negotiations raised questions among Chicago Public Schools (CPS) employees whether he had resigned. That led Brizard to send an e-mail to staff denying the rumor.

In an interview with the Chicago Tribune Friday, Brizard suggested that his management style did not fit well with City Hall. ?I call it a marriage that was perhaps imperfect. My style and personality is maybe not what the mayor wants. I have felt he is not comfortable with me,? he said.

Media accounts suggest Emanuel was critical of Brizard?s management decisions involving key hires within the system, and as mounting news stories made that displeasure public, it became clear Brizard was a liability.

?The questions about J.C. became a distraction from what we had to do. We had a mutual agreement [that the distraction was] not helpful.? It kept on becoming about the static and noise about J.C. He said, ?Look, getting the schools right is more important than me,? ? the mayor told the Chicago Sun-Times Friday.

Iran's Salehi visits Qatar to discuss Iranians seized in Syria

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi visited Qatar in the past week to discuss the fate of 48 Iranians kidnapped by rebels in Syria, a deputy foreign minister said on Saturday, according to Iran's Fars news agency.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian did not say who Salehi met while in Qatar, whose government is a major supporter of rebels fighting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Iran's closest ally in the region.

Syrian rebels fighting to overthrow Assad seized the group of 48 Iranians in August, accusing them of being members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards sent to help Syrian government forces crush the uprising which began in March last year.

Iran says the group was on a religious pilgrimage and has called for their immediate release.

"During this trip in addition to the developments in Syria, specifically the 48 kidnapped Iranian pilgrims in Syria were discussed," Amir-Abdollahian said, according to Fars.

Iran has called on Turkey and Qatar to use their links with rebel groups to help secure their freedom.

The al-Baraa brigade, part of the main rebel group, the Free Syrian Army, said last week it would start killing the Iranians within 48 hours unless Assad freed Syrian opposition detainees and stopped shelling civilian areas.

But Qatar, following a request from Iran, urged the rebels not to carry out the threat. Amir-Abdollahian said on Saturday the kidnapped Iranians were in good health.

Saudi Arabia's intelligence chief, Prince Bandar bin Sultan, also visited Qatar this week, Qatari news agencies reported. Saudi Arabia is also supporting the Syrian rebels.

There was no indication of any link between the two visits.

World of Finance.: Relaxed Investor.

Evolution is a process which guarantees the survival of those who adapt to the changing environment. This is true of nature. This is equally applicable to the world of investing.

The readers of this blog come from many walks of life and from different countries. There are day traders, traders who specialize only in emini or options and a vast majority who are not traders at all but simply want to preserve and grow their capital and want to take control of their financial independence in their own hand. These vast majorities of readers are folks who work full time, have 401K accounts, and feel that they are not being served by their financial?advisor.? Obviously the needs of each group are different and how each would approach their trading / investment approach is also different. For e.g. ?a day trader who is very active in the market (has to be) can move between positions multiple times in a day. But that option may not be available to someone who is working in the law enforcement and is busy chasing the crooks.

I want to share some of the emails from readers (I have obtained their permission):

Don asked:

I have started Swing Trading, but not very successfully so far. What is a reasonable expectation of returns after a ramp up period of say a year, if someone works at it diligently? I recently sold my business and have invested the proceeds. I find it interesting to observe and explore?the patterns I seen in the markets and would I believe be happy spending my time being active in the financial markets by taking advantage of these patterns.? This form of? "trading" would only make sense if I can significantly outperform the returns I could achieve with index investing.? As well I am in my 50's so I am concerned with capital preservation.? I should say as well that my spouse is concerned that this form of "speculation" is too risky for us at this stage in our life. And, I of course want to be respectful of her concerns.

Robert said:

grateful if you could add my email to your list. I ?have tried to day trade, mainly ES futures but never made money so I need more of your 'relaxed' investor methods whilst still putting in time on technical, risk/ ETF picks etc. find your blog and twitter always worthwhile

And they are not alone. Possibly over 90% of the readers will find themselves in that position, of not making enough money, consistently, over long period of time. In the process, the capital pool is depleted and the dream of achieving financial independence and securing the retirement remains just that, a dream.

I have renamed a page in blog as ?Relaxed Investor?. There, I have outlined 16 investment strategies of Sir John Templeton: (H/T Ritholtz.com) 1.Invest for maximum total real return
2. Invest ? Don?t trade or speculate
3. Remain flexible and open minded about types of investment
4. Buy Low
5. When buying stocks, search for bargains among quality stocks.
6. Buy value, not market trends or the economic outlook
7. Diversify. In stocks and bonds, as in much else, there is safety in numbers
8. Do your homework or hire wise experts to help you
9. Aggressively monitor your investments
10. Don?t Panic
11. Learn from your mistakes
12. Begin with a Prayer
13. Outperforming the market is a difficult task
14. An investor who has all the answers doesn?t even understand all the questions
15. There?s no free lunch
16. Do not be fearful or negative too often

All his advices are worth listening to, but what I like most is point # 2. Invest ? don?t trade or speculate. However, Sir Templeton possibly wrote these rules during bull market and we may have to adapt them a bit in this secular bear market. (yes, I think we are in a secular bear market rally, which will end soon)

To elaborate more on point # 2:

The stock market is not a casino, but if you move in and out of stocks every time they move a point or two, or if you continually sell short? or deal only in options?or trade in futures?the market will be your casino. And, like most gamblers, you may lose eventually?or frequently. You may find your profits consumed by commissions. You may find a market you expected to turn down turning up?and up, and up?in defiance of all your careful calculations and short sales. Every time a Wall Street news announcer says, ?This just in,? your heart will stop. Keep in mind the wise words of Lucien Hooper, a Wall Street legend: ?What always impresses me,? he wrote, ?is how much better the relaxed, long-term owners of stock do with their portfolios than the traders do with their switching of inventory. The relaxed investor is usually better informed and more understanding of essential values; he is more patient?and less emotional; he pays smaller capital gains taxes; he does not incur unnecessary brokerage commissions; and he avoids behaving like Cassius by ?thinking too much.??

And a little bit on point # 3:

There are times to buy blue chip stocks, cyclical stocks, corporate bonds, U.S. Treasury instruments, and so on. And there are times to sit on cash, because sometimes cash enables you to take advantage of investment opportunities.
The fact is there is no one kind of investment that is always best. If a particular industry or type of security becomes popular with investors, that popularity will always prove temporary and?when lost?may not return for many years.

It is difficult to make money day trading when your only resource is your home computer, some technical analysis tools and an internet connection. You are competing against those bots that are able to front run every order. You are competing against those four massive US TBTF banks that control 70% of the derivative market and can employ the best and brightest to write program for trading. Against those hedge fund genius that trade on insider information and have a wide army of expert network. ?Above all, your worst enemy is you yourself, your emotions, fear and greed. Very few day traders make money on a regular basis, (over 90% lose money) year after year and those who do, deserve a special salute.

I have been writing about being patient, cash is king etc. Because I have done that mistake of jumping from trade to trade. I have now given up on that and I only trade only when I think it is a long term trend. I would rather not make money, than risk losing it. Capital saved is capital earned. That is why I am not interested in shorting the market for 30 or 50 points?any-more?nor do I want to go long for that many points. I am waiting for the clear sell or buy signal which will run for 100+ points or more. These opportunities come once in a while but when they come, we are too exhausted or emotionally drained from our failed trades to take advantage of them. The markets are tradable only two or three times in a year, rest of the time; it is not worth the risk. At least from the ordinary investors? point of view.

There are some sectors, some industries which will go up even when the rest of the markets are down and we have to identify those. I quote this from Josh Brown of reformed broker: The consumer staples sector of the S&P is up 47% since the peak of the S&P 500 in 2007 while the broader market is still down 7% five years later. Did you learn anything? Here's what you should have learned: Even in the very worst of times, people still have to get out of bed, make their kids breakfast and put them on the bus to school. They will die before they stop doing that, no matter what kind of recession/depression/crash you think is afoot. Before I let my kids go hungry, I will work three jobs and then kill a hobo to sell his organs. And you will too. Invest accordingly, end of lesson.

The post is getting too long so I better finish it now. In conclusion, let?s just have a longer time horizon and at the same time be nimble. We are not going achieve our financial nirvana tomorrow and it is going to be a long journey. (We also need bit of luck with us.) Hope I will be able to share the journey with you.

(AP) ? Nnamdi Asomugha sat at his locker stall in full uniform with his head down long after the Philadelphia Eagles blew one they had in their grasp.

It'll be a long bye week for this turnover-prone team.

Matthew Stafford rallied desperate Detroit back from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit, Jason Hanson kicked a 45-yard field goal in overtime and the Lions beat the Eagles 26-23 on Sunday.

"This is pretty bad because this was a big game for us," said Asomugha, the two-time All-Pro cornerback. "We lost last week and going into a bye this hurts a lot because it would have helped us. If we can't win a game like that, we have to go back to the drawing board. We have to close out a game like that."

A defense that held Stafford and Calvin Johnson in check for 3? quarters collapsed at the end for the second straight week, and the Eagles (3-3) enter the bye with consecutive late losses. Ben Roethlisberger led Pittsburgh on a long drive that ended with a final-second field goal for a 16-14 win last Sunday.

"They wanted it more. We blew it," cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie said.

Stafford led Detroit to 17 points in the last 10 minutes to force overtime, throwing a TD pass and running for a score. He finished with 311 yards passing, one TD and one interception.

The comeback kept Lions (2-3) from a 1-4 start a year after opening 5-0 en route to their first playoff appearance since 1999.

"It takes lot of heart," Stafford said. "It would have been a lot easier to just pack it in. This team has lot of fight. We didn't play great. We did on defense, not on offense. Every guy in that locker room didn't stop playing and that's what got us the win."

Michael Vick threw for 311 yards and two TDs, but he also had two interceptions and a botched snap led to another lost fumble. The Eagles now have 17 turnovers in six games, including 13 by Vick on eight picks and five fumbles.

"This is going to hurt for a long time," Vick said. "We put ourselves in position to win and didn't finish."

Down 23-13 after Vick's 70-yard TD pass to Jeremy Maclin with 5:18 left, the Lions answered.

Detroit had two shots from the Eagles 1 following a pass interference penalty on Colt Anderson with 13 seconds left in regulation. But Stafford misfired on both passes and Hanson kicked a 19-yard field goal to send it to overtime.

"I don't know what to tell you other than we have to do better," coach Andy Reid said. "We've got to learn how to win football games. You have a 10-point lead with 10 minutes left, you have to learn how to finish."

The Lions sacked Vick on the first two plays of the extra quarter, forced a punt out of the end zone and started at midfield.

Stafford hit Johnson for a 17-yard gain to the Eagles 27 on first-and-20. A few plays later, Hanson nailed the winner.

"I was nervous," Hanson said. "We needed it bad. We needed it to get our season on track."

Johnson had 135 yards receiving, but the All-Pro wide receiver still has no TD catches from Stafford this season. He was called for offensive pass interference to negate his 11-yard TD grab in the fourth quarter.

The undisciplined Lions overcame 16 penalties, most in the NFL this season.

After Detroit closed within 16-13 in the fourth, the Eagles got their biggest play of the season when Vick connected with Maclin on a deep slant pass. It was Philadelphia's first play for more than 49 yards all season.

No problem for the Lions. Stafford had found his groove.

Stafford threw a 57-yard pass to Tony Scheffler to get deep in Eagles territory and then tossed a 17-yard pass to Nate Burleson to cut it to 23-20 with 3:32 left.

The Eagles went three-and-out and Stafford drove the Lions downfield to tie.

Vick shook off a poor start and the offense finally got going late in the second quarter. He hit LeSean McCoy on a 2-yard pass to put Philadelphia up 7-6.

The Eagles increased their lead to 10-6 on Alex Henery's 26-yard field goal on the first series of the second half.

Henery kicked a 32-yarder to make it 13-6 after Brent Celek was called for offensive pass interference to negate his 3-yard TD catch.

That penalty turned out to be the difference.

Henery's 49-yarder early in the fourth extended the margin to 16-6 for Philadelphia's biggest lead of the season.

But the Lions got right back in it when Stafford led an 80-play drive, finishing it with a 1-yard run to make it 16-13. Johnson, held to just one previous catch, caught passes of 37 and 20 yards on the drive.

On Philadelphia's next play, Chris Houston intercepted Vick's deep pass to DeSean Jackson at the Lions 34. But the Eagles held on defense, setting up Vick-to-Maclin.

NOTES: Eagles rookie Fletcher Cox was ejected in the fourth quarter after getting an unnecessary roughness penalty for punching a player on Detroit's extra point. ... Lions CB Jacob Lacey left with a concussion. ... Johnson's only TD catch this season came on a pass from Shaun Hill. ... Lions FS Louis Delmas was active and starting for the first time this season after having knee surgery in August. ... Ricky Watters was the honorary captain for Philadelphia.

I am 23 and unfourtantly I am on the short side for a guy standing at 5ft 8 1/2.

I weigh roughly 144 lbs but I am thinking of putting on more weight. I probably could be much heavier if I wanted too be.

Given my height and my age what do you think would be my ideal weight?

guys get 110# for the first five feet and then 6# per inch, so 151#, give or take 10#, would be ideal. you're perfectly fine where you are. at least that's what they taught me in medical school.

If you want to gain weight, make sure to gain it in muscle and not fat! For your height you're in a healthy weight range.

Pick up heavy logs and rocks? There's bodyweight exercises, but I find those tedious.

There is no such thing as "ideal" weight, unless you're competing in weight divisions. Check your body composition.

Also you can gain weight in muscle by eating a lot and utilizing your muscles by progressively stressing them.
