Activists rally to end prison torture in Egypt

CAIRO (Reuters) - About 1,000 activists rallied in Cairo on Saturday demanding an end to brutality in Egyptian prisons and calling for a ban on torture in the new constitution.

Islamist president Mohamed Mursi was elected in June following 16 months of rule by the army council that took over after Hosni Mubarak's overthrow last year. During the council's rule, some 12,000 civilians were tried by army courts and many of them were tortured in prisons, according to rights groups.

Aida Seif al-Dawla, of the El Nadeem Center for Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence, spoke on a stage on Saturday and told the crowds that the group has documented 150 cases of torture in the 100 days since Mursi took office.

"Mursi is following in Mubarak's footsteps," Dawla said.

"Oh martyrs rest in peace, the struggle continues," chanted the demonstrators, who hung up on nearby street walls posters showing the disfigured faces and bodies of torture victims.

"No torture - is that too much to ask?" read a poster carried by members of campaign group A Nation without Torture.

The protest, which took place near the Interior Ministry, commemorated the death of Essam Atta, a young Egyptian whose family said he was tortured to death by authorities in October last year while held in Torah prison south of Cairo.

An army court had jailed Atta for two years in February 2011 for offences including "thuggery". His family accused prison officers of torturing him by inserting a hose in his mouth and anus and pumping water and soap into his body causing mass bleeding that led to his death.

"All I ask of our new president is to treat Essam as though he were one of his own children and seek justice for him and for the other martyrs," cried Enaam Youssef, Atta's mother, who was present at the event with her daughters.

Rights groups have compared Atta's death to that of online activist Khaled Said, whose disfigurement and killing at the hands of police in Alexandria in 2010 was one of the factors that helped ignite the revolt that toppled Mubarak.

Human rights groups have demanded that Egypt's new constitution, which is being drawn up by a 100-strong assembly, explicitly ban torture.

Aged white cheddar and broccoli soup with chorizo

Cheesy and warm, but also spicy and smokey, this soup will please both kids and parents. The chorizo and aged white cheddar make it different from your average bowl broccoli cheddar soup.

By Amy Deline,?The Gourmand Mom / November 3, 2012

Intensely cheesy and extra comforting, serve this soup on a chilly day for a delicious dinner.

I am one of those parents who flood their Facebook page with pictures of my children. Yes, I?m?that?person. Everyone knows at least one these people. For my friends, it?s me. My Facebook wall reads like most parents? baby books ? full of photos, videos, firsts, favorites, and funny anecdotes. (They?re funny to me, at least.) And my profile pictures are mostly pictures of my kids, rather than of myself.

I have heard comments such as?You are not your kids, in regards to this issue. And it?s true. I am my own person. I am?not?my kids ? at least not completely. But the truth is, my children are a huge part of me. They are the very best representation of me. They are my finest creation and my life?s grandest purpose. If I do nothing else of importance during the rest of my life, I can rest easy in knowing that I grew, loved, and nurtured these precious little people.

Why wouldn?t I associate part of my identity with that of my children? Aren?t we all little bits of every person and every event we?ve experienced. And don?t we all continue to change as our lives change courses? Why wouldn?t my children shape me in the same way that I shape them? Why wouldn?t my children be irreversibly intertwined with my identity?

At this point in my life, perhaps for always and forever, my children are the center of my world. They are my passion and my motivation. They are at least as much a part of me as my love of cooking, my fear of failure, or my passion for bacon.

And in my children?s eyes, I see the me I strive to be. In their eyes, I am love. I am security. I am healing. I am their mom.?I have never felt more beautiful than the way I look in my children?s eyes. I?am?in those profile pictures I post of my children. I?m right there, in their eyes.

This soup is beautiful in?my?eyes. I may make it my facebook profile pic. It?s broccoli cheddar soup for grown-ups. Spicy chorizo gives the soup a smokey bit of heat, while the aged white cheddar (get the good stuff) adds intense cheesy flavor. There?s nothing like eating a big bowl of cheesy soup on a chilly winter day. Ultra-comforting.

Enjoy, friends.

Aged white cheddar and broccoli soup with chorizo

Ingredients
1 tablespoon olive oil
4 ounces spicy Spanish chorizo, halved and sliced
1 small onion, finely diced
3-4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced or minced
1/4 cup flour
4 cups milk (skim milk works well)
8 ounces aged white cheddar, shredded
3 cups broccoli, steamed until tender and well chopped
about 1 teaspoon salt

Directions
1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chorizo and cook for a few minutes, until the chorizo begins to release its oil.

2. Add the onion and garlic. Cook for 3-5 minutes. Sprinkle the flour over the mixture and continue cooking for a minute or two, stirring constantly.

3. Add the milk and whisk until well combined. Bring the milk to a simmer as you continue whisking. Simmer for about 3 minutes, until the milk begins to thicken.

4. Turn down the heat and stir in the cheese. Continue stirring until melted. Stir in the broccoli. Season with salt, to taste.

Secondary school science talent rewarded at prestigious event ...

Twenty of New Zealand?s most talented science students have been selected by the Royal Society of New Zealand for the Genesis Energy?s Realise the Dream. This prestigious event rewards and celebrates secondary school students who have undertaken an excellent science or engineering project.

The Chief Executive of the Royal Society of New Zealand, Dr Di McCarthy, said the students have shown great determination and imagination with their projects. ?The inventiveness that comes through in these projects is quite outstanding. Many of them have the potential to solve some very tricky problems. We believe all the students selected show great promise and we hope they will continue with their studies.?

According to Albert Brantley, Chief Executive of Genesis Energy, sponsorship of the Realise the Dream initiative is linked to one of the organization?s key values. ?As an organisation we believe in challenging how things are done today in order to change tomorrow. Consequently it is great to be able to support these students to do just that through the Realise the Dream initiative. Having tackled a problem and come up with an inventive response, these students are epitomizing the behavior we, as an organization, try to work by each day.?

Genesis Energy?s Realise the Dream begins in Auckland where the students will be hosted by scientific organisations such as the Leigh Marine Science Centre and the Liggins Institute. They travel down the North Island by coach and in Hamilton will be hosted by DairyNZ for the day.? In Tokaanu the participants will visit Genesis Energy and in Wellington they will be hosted by Massey University and NIWA.? The purpose of these visits is to inspire and introduce the participants to the many different science and engineering careers that are possible, and to experience first-hand cutting edge science in New Zealand.

?To get selected for this event is not easy, and it?s not meant to be,? says Debbie Woodhall, Talented School Students? Programmes at the Royal Society of New Zealand.? ?We are rewarding only the very best pieces of research and technology. These students have worked on their project for a year or more and have gone through several judging stages before they are even nominated for Genesis Energy?s Realise the Dream. There are only so many places available at Realise the Dream and so unfortunately students do miss out.?

The week concludes with an award ceremony hosted by the Governor General at Government House on Friday 14 December where the following awards will be announced.

Your Post-Hurricane Home Inspection Checklist

Hopefully you and your home made it through Hurricane Sandy in one piece, without much more inconvenience than losing power. But before you try to get back to your normal routine, now is the time to take a careful look at your house and catch subtle damage such as missing shingles or vents plugged by wind-blown debris.

1. Start at the roof and work your way down. If the roof is steep and high, use binoculars to inspect it. If it?s shallow and you?re comfortable on a roof, get up there and have a peek. Look carefully at valleys where roof planes intersect. Check anything that comes up through the roof, such as vent stacks. Look at the chimney top and flashing.

? In all these places, look for anything loose or missing. If you do see that some pieces blew away, roofing cement and other materials can provide a temporary repair to seal out water. But you?ll need a permanent repair for loose or missing shingles before winter comes.

2. Have a look at the dryer vent outlet. Is it plugged with debris that flew in during the storm? If necessary, get up on a ladder and look inside with a bright flashlight to see if there's anything you need to remove. When the dryer?s running, the louver flaps should open easily and you should see signs of a steady stream of warm, moist air coming out of it.

3.?The same goes for your home?s furnace or boiler vents if they run directly through the wall. Inspect the vent opening for damage and look inside to make sure it's not plugged by debris, especially bits of shattered leaves hurled into it by hurricane force winds.

4.?Visually inspect your home?s electrical service entrance. It should look as it did before the storm. If it?s sagging or leaning you?ve got trouble. Contact an electrician immediately.

5.?Are the shutters and exterior trim okay? If anything looks like it?s loosened, get up there on a ladder and have a closer look.

6.?Check gutters and downspouts, which can come loose if the wind catches them. If you can, have a look from a ladder. A gutter loosened by high winds will eventually swing loose; it can do some real damage when it finally works itself free, such as breaking a window or flying off the house and onto a car parked in the driveway. If you suspect you have a loose gutter and it?s too tall for you to get at with your ladder, call a roofing and gutter company immediately.

7. Fences are notorious for suffering post-storm problems. Take a walk down your fence row and push against it to check for storm-weakened areas. Also check features such as vine-covered lattices or house-mounted flag pole brackets, which could be hanging by a thread after the storm. Manually inspecting these takes just a few minutes, and securing them takes not much more. Do it now, before damage happens in winter, when such features will be harder to fix.

8.?Finally, if you?ve got large trees on your property, this is the time to reconsider them. The bigger they are, the more likely it is that you?ll need a licensed arborist to give them a thorough inspection. Think twice about whether you even want those big trees anymore. In the post-Sandy world, big trees are as likely to devalue your property as they were to contribute to it.
