Egypt bans online porn, causing split in society ? RT

Egypt has officially banned sexually explicit websites, three years after the country?s administrative court denounced pornographic content as ?venomous and vile.?

?The country?s Prosecutor General has ordered government ministries to block porn from the web, after ultraconservative Salafis launched a campaign called "Pure Net" to prohibit pornography online, according to an anonymous government official, AP reports.

The move by Prosecutor General Abdel Maguid Mahmoud has caused a split in Egyptian society. Conservatives welcomed the order as the first step towards an Islamic Egypt, while liberals denounced the move as a government crackdown on freedom of expression.

Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Mahmoud Ghozlan described the decision as ?a first step towards establishing a society based on ethics,? in a statement to Al-Ahram's Arabic-language news site.

The Salafist Nour Party also welcomed the decision, adding that the ban would not impact personal and public freedoms. ?Egyptian society is conservative by nature and rejects these websites,? Mohamed Nour, the party?s spokesman, asserted.

One politician called the move ?a first step towards applying Islamic Law in Egypt,? MP Ali Wanis was quoted by news website ahramonline as saying.

Others in Egypt, especially from liberal circles, were quick to criticize the ban.

?Those who are preoccupied with banning websites (which they will not be able to block for technical reasons) should be more concerned about the drafting of Egypt's new constitution,? Ayman El-Sayad, a liberal journalist and advisor to President Mohamed Morsi, tweeted.

The high costs associated with the blocking of thousands of websites have prevented the three-year-old ban ruling from being fully implemented.

In 2009, under the Hosni Mubarak government, a Cairo court ruled that ?freedom of expression and public rights should be restricted by maintaining the fundamentals of religion, morality and patriotism,? condemning graphic websites and ruling to ban them.

A scheme of how the ban would be implemented has not yet been provided to the public.

Valuable Instructions For Self Improvement In Your Life | Rob Moore ...

Making the choice to pursue personal development can be an energizing experience, and it can give you a feeling of being in control of your life. Start off by finding ways to increase your energy levels so that you have the oomph you need to put in the hard work that lies ahead. The article below has several great ideas you can use right away.

One of the most important elements of self improvement is taking proper care of your health. Being healthy correlates directly to feeling good. Not only will you perform better physically and mentally, but you?ll save yourself the time and stress of unnecessary health scares. Make better choices, dedicate yourself to it.

It is essential to have a clearly outlined goal, when working toward improving self improvement. Make sure to come up with a target goal for yourself. Having a specific goal will help you to get better results.

Leaders are tough and strong, but also humble. There is an element of service that makes up the character of a leader, as it enables them to lead with gentleness. Being a great leader requires that you uphold a standard of integrity and values that others are proud to follow, no matter what the capacity is in which you lead.

Perhaps you have set high goals for yourself and keep failing to attain them. If this is the case, it is a good idea to stop and think why. Check online and find others whom share similar goals with you and find out what they are doing compared to what you?re doing. You might discover that your aim is too high, you are missing something, or you are not putting enough into it.

Be ready to write down ideas wherever you are. Use a notepad app on your phone or even carry a real notepad with you. Write down your idea in detail, then implement it at a later time when you can expand on the issue.

Read about how your heroes became successful. A good way to not make mistakes with your career and personal life would be to learn how other people discovered their path to success. By reading what they have learned, it will give you a positive boost on your self improvement.

Stress is what often brings down happiness. When the human mind is preoccupied with a state of stress, damage can be caused to both physical and mental aspects of the body. Make sure to deal with stress in order to always think clearly and calmly about your goals. Schedule some time every day simply to unwind. Just sit back, let your mind go blank, and think about what?s important to you. Following this practice will improve your inner peace.

Personal Development

If you care for your body, you will get the most out of your personal development. You can do this by getting a sufficient amount of sleep, exercising frequently, and maintaining a healthy diet. You will have more energy if you are in shape, and therefore will be more successful in your personal development efforts. This may sound simple on paper, but it is actually quite hard.

These tips are here to help you plan successful projects on the path of personal development. It may be hard and take a great deal of effort, but you can work on your self-growth knowing you have gotten some excellent advice to help you.

The Nursery | Penelope and Me

I?ve been meaning to post pictures of Genevieve?s nursery for weeks, and I am finally getting around to it! ?These were taken two days before she was born. ?This is the color the room was painted when we moved in. ?At first, I was very unhappy with the color, but it ended up working out with all of the colors I added!

We?ll begin with the crib wall. ?This is the wall with the door into the room.

Crib Wall

With the Play Mat

Now, for some of the details. ?The first detail I will mention are the pom-poms. ?Jennifer was the driving force behind one of my baby showers, and when she plans decorations for events like that, she always tries to pick things that might be able to be used later. ?She did a great job! ?She called me for colors, and the pom-poms ended up matching the room perfectly. ?Mom and I spent an afternoon arranging and rearranging all of the colorful balls until we were pleased with the results.

The next item on that wall I will mention is the owl play mat.

Play Mat

This mat is totally cool! ?My grad-school friend, Ashlee, made it for us. ?She saw something like it in a store, and she decided to expand her sewing skills and make one for Genevieve! ?Ashlee designed it herself and sewed it all together. ?I love it! ?Cooper occasionally claims it as her own, but I know we?ll be using this more and more as Genevieve becomes more mobile.

Coat Hanger

This coat hanger came from Dale and Lisa (Megan?s Mom and Dad). ?Lisa found it and couldn?t resist. ?I love having her little coats on it, and I have also hung notes that the ladies from our church wrote at my first baby shower. ?The notes had prayers and thoughts for sweet miss Genevieve. ?I love reading through them!

The Crib

I am quite proud of how this came together. ?Our crib was given to us by Jill and ?Josh. ?They are quite done with making kids, so they gave us a lot of their kid stuff! ?The paisley-print bumpers and bedskirt also came from them. ?I am SO happy with how the pink fit right it. ?The owl was given to us by Blakely, a friend of mine from our church. ?The blanket, of course, came from Genevieve?s Mimi, who crocheted it especially for our little one. ?The last item I added to this wall was the mobile. ?I had everything else put together when I realized it still needed something, and the mobile made it feel complete.

We?ll move one wall over now to the window wall. ?This window looks out onto the backyard, which means the room usually gets good afternoon light.

Curtains

Folded Curtains

It just dawned on me that I didn?t get a great picture of the ?toy chest? beneath the window. ?There are six square compartments in it that I am able to slip boxes into. ?I have three of them filled with large boxes where I can put her toys. ?In the other empty spaces, I have a few of her stuffed animals, some books, and some of her blankets.

Now, as for the curtains, I am SO very happy with them. ?Like I said above, I got Genevieve?s paisley crib bedding from Jill and Josh. ?The challenge then became finding pre-made curtains or fabric that I liked to make curtains that would match the crib bedding. ?I searched high and low for pre-made curtains and was unhappy with everything I found. ?At the same time, I searched the fabric stores and wasn?t ever extremely attached to anything I saw there. ?I finally found some home decor fabric that matched better than anything else I had found and was just about to buy it when I went to Target to find a shower curtain for our bathroom. Lo and behold, what should I find but a fabric shower curtain that matched the bedding PERFECTLY! ?Seriously. ?I couldn?t believe it! ?I saved over $50 on two shower curtains compared to what I was going to have to spend on the fabric that didn?t match as well as this did. ?I came home, measured the area, and cut the curtains to size. ?This was my first time attaching and using grommets, and I am so happy with the results. ?I love the way the curtains fold up when they are open, and they slide back and forth really easily. ?This will not be my only time using grommets!

Now, on top of the toy chest I have the ?scary? owl (according to David) that Joann gave to Genevieve and a Scentsy warmer that I bought not too long after we got pregnant. ?I knew I wanted to use shades of teal in the nursery, and this warmer fit the bill perfectly!

The last item I will mention on this wall is the bow frame.

Bow Frame

Technically, this is on the adjacent closet-door wall, but since the closet door stays open on this wall the majority of the time, I?m mentioning it here. ?My sweet friend, Tiffany, started a business called Tenny Toes Bows, and she made this frame and all of the bows for Genevieve. ?If you saw the newborn photos that were taken by our friend Phil Cassell, Tiffany also made the two elegant bows that we used.

Now on to the wall with the closet door and the bookshelf!

Bookshelf Wall

Note: the computer chair is just a stand-in. ?Once we move Genevieve up to her nursery, the rocker that Grandma June gave us will be moved into its rightful place in her room. ?I really loved putting this wall together, mostly because of the beautiful frames that Kara made us.

Owl Frames and ?G? for Genevieve

Each and every one of these owls (there are 64 of them!) are unique. ?Kara made all of them herself, and Grandma June suggested the tilting eyes. ?So cute!

The ?G?

When we were fairly certain we were choosing the name Genevieve, I bought this G from Hobby Lobby. ?It was only a simple brown G at the time, and after putting it up, I knew it needed something. ?I added the sparkly ribbon thread, but that still wasn?t enough. ?To top it off, I asked Tiffany to make a bow for it. ?The cool thing is that she added an alligator clip on the back of it, and I made a connector on the G so that it can be taken off for Genevieve to wear! ?How cool! ?David is excited for when she can wear it.

The next part is the bookshelf.

Bookshelf

For the moment, this is the bookshelf that is being used in sweet Genevieve?s room for the wonderful books people gave her. ?We got this from our church in Lubbock when we needed room for our many books in our tiny apartment. ?:-) ?Eventually, I would like ?a larger one that is darker. ?The bookshelf has already come in handy, though! ?Genevieve and I have spent time reading in her room. ?That is only a tiny bit of years of reading to come. ?(How fun: the first thing we read together was Three Billy Goats Gruff, and the next day I got to watch my nephew?s version of the same story. ?So cute!)

The three owls standing together on books were from our friend, Tony. ?He took a trip to Japan a few weeks ago, and he picked these up for Genevieve. ?There are the three sizes: one for David, one for me, and one for the little one!! ?Cute! ?:-)

Owl from Jill

How great is this: Jill had this made for us before I had even said that I would be using both teal and owls for the nursery. ?She knows me so well! ?I love this.

Bucket Full of Owls

Mom came up with this idea. ?These were the owls that Kara made for our baby shower back home, and they were loved by all! ?I brought some of them home, and Mom used a pink basket from Jennifer to put them in. ?I love how they look with the books!

Now on to the last wall!

Changing Table Wall

We weren?t originally going to get a changing table for her room, but I am now extremely pleased we have it! ?This was given to us by some sweet friends at church that no longer had a need for it. ?Yay! ?You can see our cloth diapers on the middle shelf of the table. ?I?ll be writing a post about them soon. ?I love them!

I?m glad that I added the cabinet on the wall next to the table. ?This was a cabinet we bought to add storage to our itty-bitty bathrooms in our apartments. ?It makes it extremely convenient to grab what we need while we are changing her.

Owl and Frames

This is the last bit that I will explain! ?These frames were from our first baby shower here in town that our friend, Tamara, made for us. ?The frame on the left is a verse ? Psalm 139:16-18. ?You can?t tell in this picture, but the frame also represents David and me. ?There are 0?s and 1?s in yellow representing David?s computer skills, numbers in blue for my math skills, and math symbols in the back in pink. ?I love the attention to detail!! ?(You can?t expect anything less from Tamara, though!) ?The frame on the right has a tree, and everyone at the shower signed the branches of the tree. ?So sweet.

The owl was from my ?San Antonio Grandma,? Maxine. ?She said she was at a craft store and couldn?t resist getting it for us. ?This was just a few days before Genevieve was born, and it happened to match the nursery PERFECTLY! ?I absolutely love it!

The thing I love about Genevieve?s nursery is that it is a picture of the sweet family members and friends that love us. ?So much of what we have in the room came from others, and it all fit together perfectly! ?How cool is that?! ?I am always so happy when I walk into the room. ?It?s the only one in our new house that is basically finished. ?I?m ready to put my decorating skills to the test in the rest of the house!

Al-Qaida leader urges Muslims to fight in Somalia

(AP) ? Al-Qaida's leader is urging Muslims to join militants in Somalia in the battle against African Union troops, which he says have been boosted by U.S. support.

Ayman Al-Zawahri says Somalia's al-Qaida branch, al-Shabab, should use guerrilla tactics and suicide bombings to wage jihad, or holy war.

Somalia had been in chaos for years, ruled by warlords and insurgents bent on creating an Islamic state. The militants, who once controlled nearly all of Mogadishu, have been gone from the capital for more than a year, and in September the African troops booted them out of their last urban stronghold, the port city of Kismayo.

In his seven-minute audio message posted late Tuesday on militant websites, al-Zawahri says the loss of Kismayo came after "clear, direct and flagrant support from the Americans."

Bay Area Nonprofits Defend Some Tax Breaks for The Wealthy - KQED

by Amy Julia Harris, The Bay Citizen

They help drug addicts in the Tenderloin, feed hungry children and aid struggling public schools. They?re also big fans of tax breaks for America?s millionaires.

Bay Area nonprofits, which often advocate for some of the neediest Americans, are finding themselves the unlikely defenders of a politically unpopular stance: keeping some tax loopholes for the rich.

(Jupiter Images)

?It?s a paradox,? said Jan Masaoka, CEO of the California Association of Nonprofits, a coalition of more than 1,600 charities. ?The nonprofit sector, which roots for the underdog, supports tax breaks to the wealthy because charitable deductions help us.?

Tax policy has been a hot topic in this year?s presidential campaign, with both candidates floating proposals to broaden the tax base by eliminating tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans.

While Republican candidate Mitt Romney has been vague on specifics, he has said he wants to limit the wealthiest taxpayers? deductions, which could directly affect charities? bottom lines. In the Oct. 3 presidential debate, he proposed putting a $25,000 or $50,000 cap on all itemized deductions.

President Barack Obama?s 2013 budget proposal pushed for capping the charitable deduction at 28 percent for taxpayers at the highest marginal income rate. Those are individuals whose annual income is greater than $200,000 and couples with income that exceeds $250,000.

Although Obama?s plan would have less effect than Romney?s, it too would shrink incentives for top earners to donate to charities.

Most voters generally favor closing tax loopholes for the upper tier of earners, but a key loophole ? the itemized deduction for charitable giving ? has become a major lifeline for charities. Limiting those tax incentives means it would be more expensive for many Americans to donate to charities.

That?s a big worry for the San Francisco Bay Area, home to one of the largest nonprofit sectors in the nation. By one estimate from the Stanford Project on the Evolution of Nonprofits, there are more than 9,800 nonprofits in the Bay Area alone. Those groups spent $41 billion in 2000, representing nearly 14 percent of the total regional gross domestic product, according to the study.

Officials say it?s not surprising that charities across the board support tax deductions that encourage philanthropy: People get a tax write-off, and charities get a donation.

?Clearly, the nonprofit sector supports it,? said Colin Lacon, president and CEO of the Northern California Grantmakers, a membership association for philanthropic associations. ?It?s a way to encourage those who have the income to give.?

With nonprofits already scrounging for money in a climate of dwindling public funds and competitive government grants, donations ? often from wealthy donors ? are becoming more important to many charities.

?Public funds are getting tighter and tighter on the state and national level, so what you?re finding is that folks are expanding their search for donors and private sources,? Lacon said. ?But they don?t match up. Public dollars are huge. It creates some pressure that says the philanthropic community has to fill the gap.?

Wealthy donors are hugely important to charities. Of the nearly $300 billion donated to charities last year, individuals donated more than 70 percent, according to a Bank of America study released last week. Roughly half of that was donated by the wealthiest 3 percent of American households.

There?s ongoing debate about how much of an impact closing tax loopholes would have on charitable giving, but almost everyone agrees that as tax incentives go down, so do donations.

?Some people want to give whether they get a tax break or not,? said Micheline Savarin of?the United Way of the Bay Area, one of the largest area nonprofits that provides food, shelter, after-school help and work training to impoverished local communities. ?I would hope (changing tax policy) wouldn?t affect the giving, but it probably would.?

Martin Feldstein, an economics professor at Harvard University, estimated that if politicians completely axed income tax deductions for charitable contributions, donations to education nonprofits and hospitals would drop 40 to 65 percent.

But major donations don?t look like they?re going to evaporate anytime soon.

More than half of households with annual income of more than $200,000 or a net worth of more than $1 million said they would maintain their level of giving even if they couldn?t take any deductions, according to last week?s Bank of America study.

Masaoka, of the California Association of Nonprofits, said presidential tax policy is important for charities because some people?s donations are spurred by tax write-offs, but nonprofits are still primarily banking on plain old generosity.

?For the most part, people give to nonprofits because they care about this or that art museum or cause, not because they want a tax deduction,? she said.

Brazil to distribute oil revenues more evenly

(AP) ? Brazil's House of Representatives has approved a controversial proposal to share profits from the country's growing oil production sector more evenly between petro-producing states and those with little or no production.

The bill, approved late Tuesday, increases royalties oil companies operating here will have to pay the government from 10 percent to 15 percent of total profits. Of that, 21 percent will go to non-oil producing states and municipalities.

Legislators from Brazil's top oil producers, Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo states, have threatened to challenge the measure in the courts.

The Senate approved the same text last year, meaning it will now go to President Dilma Rousseff for ratification. Government sources say she's likely to sign off on the bill.

Experts say massive oil discoveries off the Brazilian coast could yield an estimated 50 billion barrels.

Virtual Receptionist Company Named Best Place to Work in Nation ...

PORTLAND ? If a company is a great place to work does that mean it?s a great place to do business with? Typically, happy employees mean better customer service ? and when it comes to the virtual receptionist industry Ruby Receptionists is leading the pack.

Great Place to Work just named Ruby Receptionists the #1 Best Small to Medium Size Workplace in the nation. The list, which recognizes companies that have exceptional workplace cultures, was published this week in Forbes magazine.

?I was incredibly touched to hear that we had made the list. And was speechless when I learned we were number one. We have long been creating a remarkable and rewarding workplace culture,? says Ruby Founder & CEO Jill Nelson.

?I am so proud of everyone at Ruby. We all come to work each day with a real passion and purpose for the work we do ? and, more importantly, for the people we work with. In an era focused on technology, we?re keeping real human connections alive and well.?

Ruby is no stranger to accolades for the way it treats its virtual receptionist employees. Ruby Receptionists has landed in the top 10 of Oregon Business magazine?s ?100 Best Companies to Work for in Oregon? list for the past two years. The virtual receptionist company stood out to among hundreds of applicants for the national Great Place to Work list. Great Place to Work evaluates companies using a unique methodology based on five dimensions: credibility, respect, fairness, pride and camaraderie.

?This list represents the best of the best,? says Susan Lucas-Conwell, Global CEO of Great Place to Work. ?While each company is unique, what they have in common are strong cultures that support positive workplaces.?

As Lucas-Conwell sees it, the virtual receptionist makes exceptional efforts toward fostering employee happiness. For example, the company sponsors several parties each year, along with community service activities and educational programs that aim to foster team-building and camaraderie. Ruby Receptionists also gives employees access to company-sponsored gift cards and a pre-paid Amazon.com account so they can spontaneously send clients small, thoughtful gifts that support Ruby?s ?Practice WOWism? core value.

The virtual receptionist company also recently launched two unique programs: ?Five at Five,? a new sabbatical program providing five weeks of paid sabbatical upon five years of employment. Eleven of Ruby?s 95 current employees will become eligible for sabbatical this year. Ruby?s program is believed to be one of the first among other companies offering phone-based support, such as call centers and answering services. The second was Ruby?s innovative ?Happiness Journal? program, which asked employees to write daily about their gratitude; the six-week program increased employee happiness and, in turn, had a positive impact on the bottom line.
