F-22 Raptor crashes in Florida panhandle

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Florida ?- An Air Force F-22 Raptor fighter jet crashed near a Florida Panhandle highway Thursday, but the pilot was able to eject safely and there were no injuries on the ground, the military said.?????????????

The single-seat stealth fighter, part of a program that has been plagued with problems, went down Thursday afternoon near Tyndall?Air Force Base, just south of Panama City on The Gulf of Mexico. The pilot received medical treatment and a section of Highway 98 that runs through the base was closed as rescuers responded.??????????

The crash was on?Tyndall?land and no one on the ground was hurt, said Air Force Sgt. Rachelle Elsea, a spokeswoman for the base where F-22 pilots train.?????????????

The Air Force said the plane went down in a wooded area near the highway.???????????

The cause of the crash isn't clear, but the Air Force has been trying to address problems with the $190 million aircraft for several years. In 2008, pilots began reporting a sharp increase in hypoxia-like problems, forcing the Air Force to finally acknowledge concerns about the F-22's oxygen supply system. Two years later, the oxygen system contributed to a fatal crash. Though pilot error ultimately was deemed to be the cause, the fleet was grounded for four months in 2011.??????

New restrictions were imposed in May, after two F-22 pilots went on the CBS program "60 Minutes" to express their continued misgivings. The Air Force has said the F-22 is safe to fly - a dozen of the jets began a six-month deployment to Japan in July - but flight restrictions that remain in place will keep it out of the high-altitude situations where pilots' breathing is under the most stress.????????????

Internal documents and emails obtained by The Associated Press earlier this year show Air Force experts actually proposed a range of solutions by 2005, including adjustments to the flow of oxygen into pilot's masks. But that key recommendation was rejected by military officials reluctant to add costs to a program that was already well over budget.

Samsung seeks details of Apple's HTC patent settlement

Android Central

In an effort to stop Apple from imposing a sales ban on their products in the U.S., Samsung is seeking to have Apple disclose the terms of their patent settlement with HTC. The grounds for the court request are that the patents in question may be related to those that Apple had claimed were infringed upon by Samsung - in particular, user experience patents which Apple had previously refused to license to anyone. If they turned around and licensed these patents to HTC, Apple will have a hard time convincing courts that the $1 billion in compensation isn't enough to keep them happy.

Though a sales ban is seeming increasingly unlikely for this particular case, Apple and Samsung will be duking it out in courts well into 2014, and the outcome of this request could easily set the stage for patent disputes to come.

It's great to see that Apple may be put in a position where they have to license their more ridiculous patents more freely, but one still has to wonder what made Apple ease up and accept a settlement with HTC in the first place. Any ideas? Maybe Tim Cook wants to relax Apple's image a bit, or maybe just save on legal fees?

4 Qualifications to Look for When Hiring Your Virtual Assistant ...

Nov

2012

hire a virtual assistantSo you finally realized that you can?t clone yourself. We all know there are not enough hours in a day. And when your business starts to grow, you simply just can?t do all the work. Picture this. You have just finished a really successful product launch. Now how are you going to reply to every single email from your customers? A colleague invited you to be an expert on a telesummit. Do you really have the time and patience to learn how to set up a squeeze page where people can sign up to receive your free gift? You are reading this because you probably realized it?s time to hire a virtual assistant. So I?m not going to talk about the benefits of hiring a virtual assistant or convince you to hire one. But before hiring a virtual assistant, you need to learn about the qualifications that you should look for, so keep reading.

For solo entrepreneurs who have just started out in business and cannot afford to hire staff full time, you need not fret. You don?t need to hire your family as your staff as that will only cause you problems later on. The answer to this is your next best friend?hire a virtual assistant.

Now, the next question that you might ask is how to hire a virtual assistant? What qualifications should you look for? Here are some of my suggestions:

  1. Look for a virtual assistant with expertise. A person who does his particular work well is better than someone who tries to do everything at once. For example, if you need a writer to write blog posts for you, pick one who specializes in writing alone. This will give you quality in the output.
  2. Relevant experience. It is equally important to choose an assistant who has worked with someone in your field. Hiring a social media assistant who has worked exclusively with musicians would be difficult for someone with a real estate business. It would also help if you check his/her style of working to see if it blends with yours. You would want someone who satisfies your business needs.
  3. Ask the VA what they are really good at. If you need help with someone and you are hiring a VA with no experience, don?t just rely on the ?I?m willing to learn? statement. Would you hire a VA and teach him/her how to be a VA? It?s good to ask the VA what tasks they are really good at, which tools they have experience in using, etc.
  4. Years of experience. Although not everyone does this, I think it?s still good to ask how long the VA has been in the business. While some VAs may be new in the business, it doesn?t mean that they are not as skilled as others.?

When you are narrowing down your choices for the perfect virtual assistant to work with you, don?t base your choice solely on how much they charge? seriously. Experienced and highly skilled VAs charge what they are worth.?

If you long for that success of accomplishing more in your business, hiring a virtual assistant is your next best move. This will not only unburden you but it will grow your business as you focus on important decisions than on taxing details.

(AP) ? Republican U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais, who opposes abortion rights, testified during divorce proceedings that he and his former wife made a mutual decision for her to have two abortions, according to divorce transcripts released Thursday.

DesJarlais, who practiced medicine before going to Congress, easily won a second term in Tennessee's conservative 4th District despite previous revelations that he once urged a patient with whom he was having an affair to get an abortion.

On his campaign website, DesJarlais espoused an anti-abortion position, saying: "All life should be cherished and protected. We are pro-life."

DesJarlais' spokesman and campaign manager did not return messages seeking comment.

Court documents from the 2001 divorce trial were released by the state Democratic Party, which had hoped to make them public before the Nov. 6 election. They couldn't because the 679-page transcript of testimony wasn't complete.

According to DesJarlais' testimony, his ex-wife Susan had her first abortion because she was taking an experimental drug that carried potential risks in pregnancy. The second came during problems in their relationship while they were living together before their marriage.

"Things were not going well between us and it was a mutual decision," DesJarlais testified. "I don't think that it was easy for either one of us. I think it was a very difficult and poor choice and I think that there are probably regrets both ways."

DesJarlais' first wife had supported earlier efforts to release the court records, though her attorney said Thursday he hadn't had time to review them enough to comment.

DesJarlais in the court proceedings acknowledged having sex with at least two patients and he said he prescribed painkillers for at least one of them.

"Yes, she is a patient and I wrote her prescriptions," DesJarlais said.

He urged one of those patients to get an abortion during a phone conversation that he recorded. The congressman denied during the campaign that he had recorded the call, but in his 2001 testimony he acknowledged that he did. DesJarlais said he was only trying to get her to admit she wasn't pregnant.

The transcripts show that woman testified under oath that she had been pregnant. She declined to answer whether she had an abortion but said she didn't have a child by DesJarlais.

The watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington last month filed a complaint with the Tennessee Department of Health arguing that DesJarlais conducted an inappropriate sexual relationship with a patient. DesJarlais said at the time that he doesn't expect anything to come out of the complaint.

While on the stand, DesJarlais testified that he had sexual affairs with eight different women during 1999 and 2000 while his divorce was pending. For some of the time, he was attempting to reconcile with his estranged wife, who also admitted to having sexual relations with multiple men during the same time.

As late as the day before the election, DesJarlais attorney Harvey Cameron angrily disputed Democrats' assertions that the congressman had relationships with eight women.

"I can assure you it's not in the transcript, according to the depositions at least," he told reporters after court hearings in Chattanooga that resulted in partial release of the transcript being blocked.

DesJarlais' volatile first marriage was also a focal point of his first successful bid for office when he defeated Democratic incumbent Lincoln Davis in 2010. Davis ran TV ads that cited court records to allege DesJarlais once held a gun in his mouth for three hours and that he repeatedly pulled the trigger of an unloaded gun outside a room where his wife had locked herself in.

Susan DesJarlais said her then-husband had held the gun in his mouth in response to finding out that his mistress had become pregnant.

"He stuck a gun in his mouth and almost killed himself," she testified. "You don't think that he was upset?"

DesJarlais explained in court proceedings that he wasn't considering killing himself.

"It was never a loaded gun. It was never a suicide attempt," he said. "It was an attention-seeking act."

He also denied that he dry-fired a revolver outside the locked room.

"I opened the gun up. It is a revolver. And when you open it and turn it, it clicks. I wanted to make sure it was not loaded and it was not loaded," he said. "I'm assuming that was the sound she heard."

During the campaign Republican officials largely kept their distance from DesJarlais, declining to weigh in on the allegations. The congressman himself disappeared from the campaign trail, though he ran a barrage of television ads linking his Democratic opponent to President Barack Obama and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

State Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey told reporters before the release of the transcripts Thursday that voters in the deeply conservative district may have chosen to bide their time until a Republican challenger emerges.

"There are some that voted thinking next time there'll be somebody else in the primary ? we don't want Pelosi to be speaker, so one more time we'll vote for Scott," he said. "He'll have a primary opponent. I mean, he knows that."

DTCC finds 1.3 million soaked securities in Sandy-flooded NY vault

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Depository Trust & Clearing Corp., which processes financial transactions and stores securities, has begun the long process of recovering about 1.3 million soaked securities that were stored in a 10,000-square-foot underground vault in a lower Manhattan skyscraper flooded by Superstorm Sandy.

The company declined to disclose the value of the stocks and bonds. But it was a "very small percentage" of the $39.5 trillion of stocks and bonds that its depository stores, DTCC spokeswoman Judy Inosanto said. The percentage of securities that are handled electronically are in the "high 90s", she said.

Inosanto declined to say when the company was able to open the vault at 55 Water Street, which was flooded more than two weeks ago by surges churned by Superstorm Sandy. But when it did, DTCC found significant flooding and water damage.

"While it is premature to determine the full extent of the damage, it is essential to begin the restoration process to avoid further deterioration," the company said in a statement.

DTCC said the recovery effort is more of "an administrative and logistical challenge than an economic issue."

It maintains a vast certificate inventory file with ownership information, which can be replicated from its data centers. The company said its computer records are intact, and includes detailed inventory files of the vault's contents.

DTCC has retained disaster recovery and expert restoration firms, but declined to identify them. It said it could not yet determine how many of the physical certificates can be restored. But it expects to have a more accurate assessment of their condition in about a week. The restoration process could take months, it said.

The company said it is in discussions with various transfer agents to establish a procedure to issue replacement certificates, without requiring the original certificates to be present.

Border Patrol faces increased scrutiny following use of lethal force

The Department of Homeland Security has launched a probe of the Border Patrol agency. Since 2010, Border Patrol agents have killed 16 people. In eight cases the incidents involved rock-throwing.

By Brian Skoloff,?Associated Press / November 14, 2012

Vehicles are parked along the border fence as pedestrians cross the street in Nogales, Mexico in August. The location is near the site where a US Border Patrol agent being pelted with rocks opened fire toward Mexico, killing a 16-year-old boy.

US Border Patrol agents and local police gave chase on foot ? from bushes to behind homes, then back to the fence.

The conflict escalated. Authorities say they were being pelted with rocks. An agent responded by aiming a gun into Mexico and firing multiple shots at the assailant, killing a 16-year-old boy whose family says was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The Oct. 10 shooting has prompted renewed outcry over the Border Patrol's use-of-force policies and angered human rights activists and Mexican officials who believe the incident has become part of a disturbing trend along the border ? gunning down rock-throwers rather than using non-lethal weapons.

The Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General has launched a probe of the agency's policies, the first such broad look at the tactics of an organization with 18,500 agents deployed to the Southwest region alone. The Mexican government has pleaded with the US to change its ways. And the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights has questioned the excessive use of force by Border Patrol.

At least 16 people have been killed by agents along the Mexico border since 2010, eight in cases where federal authorities said they were being attacked with rocks, said Vicki Gaubeca, director of the ACLU's Regional Center for Border Rights in Las Cruces, N.M.

The Border Patrol says sometimes lethal force is necessary: Its agents were assaulted with rocks 249 times in the 2012 fiscal year, causing injuries ranging from minor abrasions to major head contusions.

It is a common occurrence along the border for rocks to be thrown from Mexico at agents in the US by people trying to distract them from making arrests or merely to harass them ? particularly in areas that are heavily trafficked by drug smugglers and illegal immigrants.

Still, Gaubeca balks at what she and others deem the unequal "use of force to use a bullet against a rock."

"There has not been a single death of a Border Patrol agent caused by a rock," she said. "Why aren't they doing something to protect their agents, like giving them helmets and shields?"

The Border Patrol has declined to discuss its use of lethal force policy, but notes agents may protect themselves and their colleagues when their lives are threatened, and rocks are considered deadly weapons.

Con artists have gone high-tech, utilizing the web to defraud buyers inside a variety of clever methods. No matter if they?re making use of the excitement of an Net auction to entice customers into parting with their money, applying new technologies to peddle regular business enterprise opportunity scams, working with e-mail to reach vast numbers of persons with false promises about earnings via day trading, or hijacking consumers? modems and cramming hefty long-distance charges onto their telephone bills, scam artists are just a click away.

Thankfully, law enforcement is on the cyber-case. Applying complaints to Customer Sentinel, a customer fraud database, as their guide, law enforcement officials have identified the top rated 10 dot cons facing buyers who surf the web, as well as many of your fraudsters behind them. In addition to putting lots of online con artists out of enterprise, the Federal Trade Commission, the nation?s chief consumer protection agency, wants buyers to know how not to get caught in their internet.

In accordance with the FTC, here?s what on line shoppers are complaining about most:

Whether or not you?re a buyer or a seller, there is a wise technique to ?do? World wide web auctions. Here?s how to make sure you get essentially the most from your auction action.

How Auctions Work
Web auctions are bazaars. In most instances, sellers offer you one item at a time, but occasionally sellers offer a number of plenty of the identical item. The auction net websites normally refer to auctions of numerous items as ?Dutch? or ?English? auctions. At some web pages, the seller may be necessary to sell all items at the cost from the lowest profitable bid. At other web sites, the seller is entitled for the prices bid by every single with the highest bidders.

Occasionally, Net auction sellers set a ?reserve price tag,? which is the lowest cost they may accept for an item. Some internet sites disclose the reserve price tag during the auction.

The bidding for each auction closes at a scheduled time, when the highest bidder ?wins.? Inside the case of sales of many lots, the participants using the highest bids in the close on the auction are obligated to get the items. If nobody bids at or above the reserve cost, the auction closes without having a ?winner.? In the close of a profitable auction, the buyer and seller communicate normally by e-mail to arrange for payment and delivery of the goods.

Kinds of Auctions
World wide web auctions will be business-to-person or person-to-person.

Operators of business-to-person auction websites have physical control in the merchandise becoming provided and accept payment for the goods. In person-to-person auctions, individual sellers or compact companies offer their items for auction straight to customers. Typically, the seller not the web page has physical possession in the merchandise. Immediately after the auction closes, the seller is accountable for dealing straight using the highest bidder to arrange for payment and delivery.

Payment Possibilities
Buyers may have many payment selections, including credit card, debit card, individual examine, cashier?s verify, money order, cash on delivery and escrow services. Having said that, all sellers don?t accept all types of payment.

Credit cards supply customers essentially the most customer protections, such as the ideal to seek a credit from the credit card issuer if the item will not be delivered or if the product received isn?t the item ordered. Commonly, sellers applying business-to-person auction sites accept payment by credit card. But a lot of sellers in person-to-person auctions don?t. Ordinarily they require payment by cashier?s verify or dollars order before they send the item to the winning bidder.

Some sellers agree to use an escrow service. To get a fee normally five percent with the expense in the item, paid by the buyer an escrow service accepts payment from the buyer through examine, revenue order or credit card. The service releases the income towards the seller only soon after the buyer receives and approves the merchandise. This assists defend consumers from ending up empty-handed just after paying their income. The flip side? Using an escrow service can delay the deal. As with any business transaction, investigate the escrow service?s reputation just before signing on towards the service.

How to use the Verizon Droid DNA on AT&T (or any other GSM network)

Verizon Droid DNA on GSM

I'm getting a bit of a tingle down my spine. If you look at the specs for the HTC Droid DNA, you'll notice something that looks a little out of place. but only a little. Specifically, that there's a listing for UTMS/HSPA radio frequencies. Now that's not all that out of the ordinary -- Verizon's had world phones with GSM capability for some time now, and LTE's an offshoot of GSM. But generally such frequencies aren't listed out in the open like that.

That means it's time to experiment. And as you can see from the picture above, we've had success.

More: Check out our Droid DNA forums!

The Verizon Droid DNA is completely GSM unlocked. Pop in your SIM card, change your APN settings, and it'll work on any GSM network with 850/900/1900/2100 MHz. Here in the United States, that means AT&T, and T-Mobile as well, though you won't get 3G/4G speeds on the latter because the phone doesn't run on 1700 MHz. And, of course, it means you can use it outside the United States, whether you're using a roaming plan with Verizon, AT&T -- or use a foreign carrier's SIM card.
