VA Maryland Health Care System Offers Tips During National Alzheimer?s Disease Month

November is National Alzheimer?s Disease (AD) Month. More than four million Americans have AD, and 19 million Americans have a family member with the disease. With the graying of America, the incidence of AD will increase. Clinicians are expecting the numbers to rise from approximately four million cases to nearly ten million cases by 2030. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) estimates there are approximately 571,000 Veterans with dementia. This includes an estimated 333,000 Veterans with dementia who are enrolled for VA health care, with an estimated 206,000 receiving care at a VA medical facility.

A progressive, irreversible condition, AD is the most common cause of dementia, which is a general term for a decline in memory and other thinking skills severe enough to reduce a person's ability to perform everyday activities. While AD is the most common cause of dementia-- a wide range of illnesses can cause dementia. Dr. David Loreck, a geriatric psychiatrist at the VA Maryland Health Care System who oversees the health care system?s outpatient clinic for comprehensive AD assessments, says that dementia, or disabling mental decline, is not part of the normal aging process, as many people still believe. While scientists grow closer to understanding how AD can be prevented or cured, and even though recent treatment developments include drugs that can provide mild improvement in symptoms, there are no drugs that can stop its advance or provide a cure for AD or related dementias. However, Loreck offers the following tips that can optimize brain health:

Care for Veterans with cognitive impairment is a high priority for the VA Maryland Health Care System with many Veterans returning from Iraq with traumatic brain injury. Increased attention of cognitive impairment with returning Veterans is hoped to translate to increased awareness when cognitive problems occur in the aging Veteran population.

Editor?s Note: Dr. Loreck is available as a subject matter expert on Alzheimer?s disease and dementias. To arrange an interview time, please e-mail Rosalia Scalia at rosalia(dot)scalia(at)va(dot0gov.

Is the iPad mini all that great?

So grab some pop corn and come along with me as I take you to a trip inside the mini tablet world and introduce you to the three best mini tablets in the market. PHOTO: PUBLICITY

The global market is?responding to the seven inch mini tablets?better than to any of the 10-inch standard tablets and are flooding the stores worldwide. While Apple?s Ipad 4G is still the best tablet by a mile, it is the mini tablet that is proving to be the game changer in the business. The mini tab is a cross between a smart phone and a tablet, more portable and makes a better eBook reader than a standard tablet.

So grab some pop corn and come along with me as I take you to a trip inside the mini tablet world and introduce you to the three best mini tablets in the market.

Google Nexus 7:

(Price 25, 499?for the 8 GB version)

With a 1.3 GHz quad core Tegra 3 processor and a 1280x 800pixel seven inch screen, covered with gorilla glass, the Google Nexus 7 is the rock star of the mini tab market.?CNET,?TechRadar?and Digital Trends?have all declared it as the best in the market. As an icing on the cake, it is affordable and packs in features that rival even the standard 10-inch tabs in the market.? Nexus 7 has the latest Android Jelly bean 4.1 Android system installed with eight GB internal storage (although a 16 GB version is also available in the market for a higher price), one GB RAM and a 1.2 MP front facing camera, which is adequate enough for video chats.

The tab can be charged with a USB and has a decent battery the QWERTY keyboard looks more like its smart phone counterpart. I feel that it should have been changed to suit the seven inch screen. ?Applications support is surprisingly decent, given its small size, it allows most Android phone apps to work on this tab.

My problem with tab, however, is the absence of 3G and 4G connectivity (only wifi) and no expandable memory.

Kindle Fire HD:

(Price?PKR 28,500?16 GB version)

If you have ever used Blackberry?s Play Book, you will find that Kindle Fire HD?s interface would look familiar, as the team at Quanta that designed the Play Book for RIM was also approached by Amazon?to work on the design?of the Fire HD. Extremely easy to use and with a gem of an interface, Kindle Fire HD is decent device for a budget user.

It sports a one Ghz TI OMAP four dual core processor, 512MB RAM and eight GB of internal memory (16 GB version also available). The screen is 600 x 1024 pixels and is ok for a device that is so low priced. The interface looks like a bookshelf so you can choose an app from the rows, which are like book sections, and is a modification of Android 2.3 software. The inbuilt Amazon Silk browser works fine but nothing about it is superior to other browsers out there in the market. ?The battery life is a decent eight hours.

Here?s a thing to surprise you.

Kindle Fire HD has no camera!

Another negative was the absence of Bluetooth and the fact that you are only allowed to charge it using a wall charger. Bit of a let-down for me, but if you are new to tabs, a minimal app user and don?t care much about photography then Kindle Fire HD is a good option for you. ?But the lack of Bluetooth is a major disappointment, even if you are four-years-old. Just saying.

Ipad Mini:

(Price?PKR 43,499?16 GB version)

And now the Mini. In the years to come much would be written about why Apple charged premium for a product that was more or less similar to its Google and Amazon counterparts. But each to his own.

The screen is an average 1024x 768 pixels, yes, no retina display this time, the?A5 chip is basically the same as Ipad 2?and which ironically is a Samsung make.

The Ipad Mini does have some good features like front and rear facing cameras. The rear camera is five mega pixels, something which the Nexus 7 doesn?t have. The Mini itself is very light. In fact, I found it too light for comfort! The screen colours are not as crisp as Nexus 7 but the bigger 7.9 inch screen makes it easier to read e books and magazines. The iOS 6 interface is as usual brilliant and more mature than the competitors.

Apart from that, it is almost similar in specs to Nexus 7.

The Buying Decision:?

Although the buying decision depends on one?s personal requirements, in terms of what one tab offers and most importantly at what price it offers those features, I reckon the Google Nexus 7 is the best of the bunch. Other mini tabs in the market you can consider are Toshiba Excite 7.7, the BlackBerry Playbook and the Samsung Galaxy tab 7.0 Plus.

(AP) ? Organizers of a parade in West Texas in which four U.S. military veterans were killed when a train plowed into a truck had been using the same route for three years, investigators said Sunday.

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Mark Rosekind also announced that oilfield services company Smith Industries was the owner of the truck that served as the float the veterans were on during Thursday's parade in Midland.

Rosekind said the company was cooperating with investigators, who expect to interview the driver on Monday. The NTSB declined to release the driver's name, and Rosekind said investigators don't know if the driver worked for Smith Industries.

Rick B. Smith, Smith Industries' CEO and president, did not immediately respond to phone calls or emails seeking comment.

Investigators have said the truck began crossing the train tracks even though warning bells were sounding and lights were flashing.

However, some Midland residents said they believe the signal time is too short. They say the guardrails aren't completely down by the time a train comes whizzing by.

"The signals come on and the arms go down, but before they are fully down, the train is already at the intersection," said Mark Thomas, who lives blocks from the track and says he crosses it daily.

"These signal times are unacceptable," Thomas added.

According to the NTSB, the warning system was activated 20 seconds before the accident, and the guardrail began to come down seven seconds after that. Everything functioned properly, Rosekind said, but investigators will have to check to make sure the signal timing met the requirements for that particular crossing.

The truck was the second of two parade floats filled with wounded war veterans. The first float had already cleared the tracks when the accident happened. Four veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan were killed and 16 more people were injured.

The parade was organized by a group called Show of Support-Hunt for Heroes and has been an annual event in Midland for nine years. It was supposed to be the start of a three-day weekend of banquets, deer hunting and shopping in appreciation of the veterans' service.

Rosekind said investigators were also looking at whether organizers had the proper permits for the parade.

"This is an entirely volunteer organization and activity, so there were a lot of things that were donated, and so that changes kind of the rules of what had to be filed," he said.

Midland is in Texas' oil-rich Permian basin, a region that has experienced a significant oil boom in recent years.

According to its website, Midland-based Smith Industries sells and manufactures oilfield service equipment. The website says the company provides steel and fiberglass tanks, separators, ladders, walkways and other equipment. The company has been in operation since 2000.

Smith Industries has a large facility and warehouse about five miles from the city. On Sunday, the business was closed. An American and Texas flag flew at half-mast and blue ribbons were tied around columns in a small parking lot. Large tanks, pipes, heavy machinery and trucks were scattered behind the gates.

Rosekind said the NTSB will conduct a sight test, probably Tuesday, to try to determine what the train engineer could see leading up to the crash. He said Smith Industries would likely provide a truck for the test.

According to the NTSB, the train sounded its horn nine seconds before the crash. The guardrail hit the truck, and then the engineer pulled the emergency brake, trying to bring the train that was traveling at 62 mph to a screeching halt.

The NTSB based its timeline on cameras and data records.

Killed were Marine Chief Warrant Officer 3 Gary Stouffer, 37; Army Sgt. Maj. Lawrence Boivin, 47; Army Sgt. Joshua Michael, 34; and Army Sgt. Maj. William Lubbers, 43.

Two of the injured were still at a Midland hospital Sunday afternoon, one in critical condition and another in stable condition.

Gravitational lens magnifies earliest galaxy yet seen

The contours of the gravitational lens (colored lines) along with the three images of the distant background galaxy (JD1-3).

The Universe's first galaxies played a key role in shaping the environment in which we now find ourselves. They fostered the formation of the first stars, which died in spectacular explosions that enabled a new generation of smaller stars, orbited by rockier planets. And the galaxies themselves merged and grew, forming the large galaxies and clusters that populate the Universe today. But, despite their critical role in shaping the Universe, we've never actually been able to see one of them.

Slowly, that's changing. The Hubble Deep Field exposures have helped us spot galaxies from the Universe's early days. But now, a special Hubble project has used an intervening cluster of galaxies as a lens to spot what appears to be the most distant galaxy ever imaged, one that dates from just 425 million years after the Big Bang.

Since it takes light time to reach us from distant corners of the Universe, the further you look, the older the objects you see. The wavelength of the light also gets shifted towards the red by the expansion of the Universe, which stretches it out as it travels. As you get closer to the Big Bang, light that started out in the UV end of the spectrum gets pushed deeper and deeper into the infrared. To make these galaxies even harder to spot, the extreme distance means that very few photons actually make their way to Earth, so these objects are incredibly dim.

So, to spot the most distant galaxies, the Hubble team searched for objects that weren't visible in shorter wavelengths, but did appear at longer wavelengths. To handle the dimness problem, the authors pointed the Hubble at large galaxy clusters, which have enough mass to act as a gravitational lens. (The project is called CLASH, for Cluster Lensing and Supernova survey with Hubble.)

With the Hubble pointed at the galaxy cluster MACSJ0647.7+7015, they hit the jackpot: three distinct objects that only appeared in images taken with the telescope's two deepest infrared filters. After mapping the distribution of matter (dark and otherwise) in the foreground cluster, they were able to ascertain that all three were images of the same background object, which they termed MACS0647-JD. The foreground galaxy cluster magnified the object by factors of 8x, 7x, and 2x.

But was it an early galaxy, or simply an infrared-bright object? The team behind the discovery used the Spitzer telescope to confirm that the objects were dim throughout the infrared; the Hubble hadn't simply caught the tail end of the light from a bright infrared object. An unusual aspect of gravitational lenses also helped them rule out any transient events. In addition to providing different levels of magnification, the light paths for each of the three images take different amounts of time to reach the Earth. As a result, the difference in time between some of the images is about 50 years, long enough that a transient event would have changed in character.

With a distant galaxy being the most likely candidate, the researchers estimated its likely properties. Based on the red shift, the galaxy appeared to have been emitting light when the Universe was only 425 million years old. The galaxy is also tiny (relatively speaking), at only 600 light years across, and about 108 to 109 times the mass of the Sun. The Milky Way is 250 times larger in size, and at least 100 times more massive. This provides strong support to most models of galaxy evolution, which suggest that multiple rounds of mergers took place to build the massive galaxies we see around us today.

The authors can't say much more than that at this resolution, but they are already hoping that the James Webb telescope takes a closer look at it whenever it finally gets to orbit.
