African leaders tell Congo rebels to stop war

KAMPALA (Reuters) - Heads of state from Africa's Great Lakes region on Saturday urged rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo's turbulent east to stop expanding their war and leave the town of Goma which they captured this week.

The leaders met in the Ugandan capital Kampala to try to bring an end to the conflict after the M23 rebels said they planned to "liberate" the vast central African country. The M23 is widely thought to be backed by Rwanda, a claim it denies.

A statement signed by the leaders after their meeting urged the M23 to stop talk of overthrowing an elected government and to "stop all war activities and withdraw from Goma".

Jean-Marie Runiga, the political chief of the M23 rebel group which took control of Congo's eastern city of Goma this week was also in Kampala, but could not be immediately reached for comment on the proposals.

It was also not clear whether Runiga would meet Congo's President Joseph Kabila.

The leaders said they would deploy a joint force at Goma airport comprising one company of a neutral international force of African troops, one company of the Congo army (FARDC) and one company of the M23, which currently controls the air field.

Kabila, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete and Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki attended the one-day summit. Rwandan President Paul Kagame did not attend, but was represented by Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo.

The leaders also resolved to have a United Nations force already in Goma to occupy and provide security in the neutral zone between Goma and the new areas taken by M23.

Goma is a regional headquarters of a U.N. force, known as MONUSCO, tasked with assisting government troops to protect civilians, but peacekeepers largely looked on once the army fled the city of one million people.

The statement said police that were disarmed in Goma by the M23 should also re re-armed so they can resume working.

New molecular culprit linked to breast cancer progression

ScienceDaily (Nov. 23, 2012) ? Johns Hopkins researchers have uncovered a protein "partner" commonly used by breast cancer cells to unlock genes needed for spreading the disease around the body. A report on the discovery, published November 5 on the website of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, details how some tumors get the tools they need to metastasize.

"We've identified a protein that wasn't known before to be involved in breast cancer progression," says Gregg Semenza, M.D., Ph.D., the C. Michael Armstrong Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and director of the Vascular Program at Hopkins' Institute for Cell Engineering. "The protein JMJD2C is the key that opens up a whole suite of genes needed for tumors to grow and metastasize, so it represents a potential target for cancer drug development."

Semenza and his colleagues made their finding when they traced the activity of HIF-1, a protein known to switch on hundreds of genes involved in development, red blood cell production, and metabolism in normal cells. Previous studies had shown that HIF-1 could also be hijacked to switch on genes needed to make breast tumors more malignant.

Would-be tumor cells face a host of challenges as they make the transition from working with their host to working against it, such as the need to evade the immune system and to produce more cancer cells, explains Weibo Luo, Ph.D., an instructor in the Institute for Cell Engineering and Department of Biological Chemistry who led the project. All of these efforts require switching on the right genes for the job.

To learn more about how HIF-1 works, the researchers tested a range of human proteins to see whether they would interact with HIF-1. They then sifted through the 200 resulting hits, looking for proteins involved in chemical changes to sections of DNA that determine whether or not the genes they contain are available for use. "In order for HIF-1 to switch genes on, they have to be available, but many of the genes HIF-1 activates are normally locked down in mature cells," explains Luo. "So we thought HIF-1 must have a partner that can do the unlocking."

That partner turned out to be JMJD2C, Luo says. Delving deeper, the researchers found that HIF-1 switches on the JMJD2C gene, stimulating production of the protein. HIF-1's presence also enables JMJD2C to bind to DNA at other HIF-1 target genes, then loosen those DNA sections, enabling more HIF-1 to bind to the same sites and activate the target genes.

To test the implications of their discovery, the research team injected mice with breast cancer cells in which the JMJD2C protein was not produced. Tumors with depleted JMJD2C were much less likely to grow and metastasize to the lungs, confirming the protein's role in breast cancer progression, says Luo.

"Active HIF proteins have been found in many types of tumors, so the implications of this finding go beyond breast cancer," says Luo. "JMJD2C is both an important piece of the puzzle of how tumors metastasize, and a potential target for anti-cancer therapy." Other authors of the research report are Ryan Chang, Jun Zhong, Ph.D., and Akhilesh Pandey, M.D., Ph.D., all of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

This work was supported by grants from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (contracts N01-HV28180 and HHS-N268201000032C), and by funds from the Johns Hopkins Institute for Cell Engineering.

CinemaNow adds Ultraviolet support to some of its movies

Bestbuy's CinemaNow has started to embed UltraViolet content into their video-streaming service. It's no huge surprise -- given that the retailer is a founding member of DECE -- but a good sign for anyone shoring up a collection of discs with UV digital content. CinemaNow identified compatible content with an Ultraviolet icon (seen above), while the service continues to gradually upgrade its SD content to big-screen friendly full HD. According to some early users, there's some teething issues with links to UV versions, however, suggesting CinemaNow's still tweaking the setup.

Do Pick up Bed Covers offer genuine protection?

Truck Bed covers seem to be the leading pick up truck accessory sold in North America and with excellent reason. They certainly are the most helpful aftermarket add-on a person might purchase. They protect your cargo from inadequate weather condition such as rain and snow as well as wind. They additionally provide security against burglars, and there are a few of them strolling around, minding your business. There are individuals out there with a constant eye out for something they can easily take. I can't figure it out. Just how much can they possibly get for taken product that calls for the threat of going to jail? If they think it is worth it, then they must not mind being caged up as much I would.

Without a tonneau cover it is difficult to leave your truck for a moment without having the worry of something being missing out on when you get back. When you are working and have tools or other gear in the cargo area, it could be a genuine issue to stop and go into someplace for a meal or even to utilize the bathroom. When you are traveling it is a must to safeguard your cargo from the climate as well as protection from criminals while you are away from your truck. And you know you are going to be. Your things could be there when you return or there is that 1 out of a hundred times when your gear is gone when you return, and that sucks huge time.

Some pickup bed covers supply best safety than others because they come equipped with a locking mechanism such as the fiberglass pickup bed covers and the retractable covers. Some could effortlessly have the security element updated significantly by including an aftermarket tailgate lock. These are not very expensive and are well worth the acquisition. The reason they work so well on covers such as the Bakflip styles of hard folding covers is due to the fact that you should open the tailgate to release the latch on these pickup bed covers. If the tailgate itself has a lock, then all is excellent, your cargo is well shielded. This goes the same for most soft roll up covers but the safety factor is rather reduced since all you require is a knife to get at your cargo.

If you planning to get any of the tonneau covers that do not secure do not let that prevent you. If you can not get the tailgate lock right away you could constantly get one in the future. The cover is still much best for security even if it hasn't got a lock on it. As the old saying goes, "out of sight, from mind". This saying is very real. A thief is not going to open every tonneau cover there simply to see if there is anything to take. If he doesn't understand what is under the cover, he or she will certainly most likely not bother taking a threat of getting caught for absolutely nothing.

Whatever kind of pick up bed cover you pick, it will give you a particular comfort when you leave your pick up truck for any length of time with your items in the back and out of sight. It will certainly additionally keep your products dry and out of the weather condition, and that alone is worth buying any of the tonneau covers that are available.

Analysis: Israel wins U.S. support on Gaza but differences remain

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - As conflict erupted in Gaza last week, Israel's officials and supporters embarked on what proved a successful diplomatic and media campaign to ensure the United States remained right behind them.

Israel's ambassador to Washington Michael Oren became a regular fixture on cable news channels and talk shows. Pro-Israel lobby groups such as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and the Israel Project bombarded journalists with e-mails offering footage of Hamas rocket strikes and interviews with ordinary Israelis in the line of fire.

After a year of increasingly public disagreements over how to tackle Iran, relations between the Obama Administration and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government were perhaps worse than at any time in recent memory.

But the level of U.S. backing for Israel in the last week, both Israel's supporters and independent analysts say, shows both the depth of ties between the two countries and the level of influence Israel's supporters can exert when the country feels threatened.

Few doubt there will be differences ahead, particularly when dealing with Iran returns to the top of the agenda. But for now, Israeli officials and supporters simply say they are satisfied with the level of support received over Gaza.

"I think you've seen a very strong response... standing resolutely with Israel," says Josh Block, chief executive of the Israel Project, a Washington-based pressure group that has long pushed for greater U.S. support and a tougher line against its enemies. "It's a reminder of ... how lasting the special relationship is. This is about more than the personal ties between two leaders."

Widely seen as having tried to nudge this year's U.S. presidential election against Barack Obama and towards Republican challenger Mitt Romney, Netanyahu seems keen to repair relations. On Thursday, he praised Obama for his "unwavering support."

In a CNN/ORC poll conducted over last weekend, 57 percent of Americans said they believed Israel was justified in taking military action compared to 25 percent who opposed it.

But Gaza may be almost the only issue on which the two countries genuinely and popularly agree.

Beyond differences over Iran, many Democrats in particular - as well as liberal members of the U.S. Jewish community, which makes up two percent of the total population - have expressed frustration over Israeli settlement building on the West Bank and the growing influence of Orthodox and hardline parties.

"Of course, during a war many - though by no means all - parts of American society will rally round Israel," says Ariel Ratner, a former Obama Administration political appointee and now fellow at the Truman National Security Project. "But potential problems loom large in the future if Israel doesn't address them."

URGING RESTRAINT?

A spokesman for the U.N. mission of the Palestinian Authority - which administers the West Bank and lost control of Gaza to Hamas in 2007 - would not comment on U.S. media coverage of the war or the relationship between Israel and Washington.

But he said Palestinians viewed the entire Israeli campaign as a deliberate distraction from their bid for nationhood at the United Nations. "We believe they would try anything to stop this," the spokesman said, asking not to be identified.

The United States may have been influential in urging Israeli restraint. According to Israeli officials, Obama phoned Netanyahu at the beginning of the conflict to say the United States would rather not see a ground invasion of Gaza like that during its 2008-9 war.

That may have helped avoid escalation and casualties on the scale of that war, which killed well over 1,000 people, almost all in Gaza. Israeli officials say Netanyahu always hoped to avoid another ground campaign.

Four Israeli civilians and two soldiers were killed by rocket fire from Gaza during the latest conflict. Palestinian casualties were much higher - 163, according to local officials. While Israel used a much greater tonnage of explosions than Hamas, it says it used precision munitions and went to great length to avoid collateral damage even as Hamas fired from densely populated areas.

Israel's supporters say they have been able to use a variety of techniques - from traditional newspaper editorials to Twitter and Facebook - to get their message across.

"How people get information has changed and traditional media no longer has a monopoly," says Israel Project's Block. "That presents challenges and opportunities. You've seen Israeli officials making their case - echoing the views of most Americans - very persuasively through both social media and traditional outlets."

IRAN DIFFERENCES LOOM

Pro-Israeli groups have long used a similar approach to raise awareness of their worries over Tehran's nuclear program, but with perhaps less success. U.S. voters might like their leader's pro-Israeli, but there is little enthusiasm inside or outside Washington for more major wars.

"I think events in Gaza have heightened public sympathy for Israel, and that may last for some time," says Nikolas Gvosdev, professor of national security studies at the U.S. Naval War College. "That may make it more difficult for Obama to push for concessions on the peace process with the Palestinians, but I don't think it wins the Israelis anything on Iran."

On one level, there seems little difference in position between those in Washington and their Israeli counterparts. Both want ever tightening sanctions and both nations have co-operated heavily on covert action to slow Tehran's alleged nuclear development. The United States says it will not allow Tehran to reach "breakout capacity" to build a bomb, while Israel says its "red line" is the less well defined "nuclear capability."

Israel's repeated threats this year to take matters into its own hands and strike nuclear facilities directly, however, were seen by some, in the Obama Administration in particular, as a clear attempt to influence U.S. policy. Israeli officials say military action would only be a last resort, but a nuclear Iran would simply be too great a threat and they might simply have no choice.

More attempts to push U.S. policymakers around, however, could just be counter-productive.

"It's important that Israelis understand the exact nature of the damage caused by Netanyahu's involvement in the U.S. election and general treatment of Obama," says Truman Project's Ratner. "The real problem for Israel is that very important American constituencies, including many young people and segments of the Jewish community, the media, military and next generation of Democratic party leadership, have been disturbed by general trends in Netanyahu's Israel."

Instead consider learning to use a tire repair kit?the $6 you spend on the kit will quickly be recouped the first time it saves you from having to replace a tire or walk home.

YouTube user Wranglerstar shares how this inexpensive repair kit can fix anything from bicycle to large truck tires. After locating your leak you'll want to use the rasp tool to enlarge the hole enough for the repair plug to fit. Attach the repair plug to the T-handle insert tool and insert the plug into the hole. Gently pull the T-handle tool back out and trim down any excess repair plug sticking out of the tire with a knife.

You're now ready to reinflate your tire using an air compressor, hand pump, or a CO2 inflator depending on your type of vehicle and what you have in your car emergency kit.

(AP) ? Lewis Hamilton won the pole position for the season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix on Saturday, while Formula One leader Sebastian Vettel will start fourth and title challenger Fernando Alonso eighth.

Hamilton set a lap of 1 minute, 12.458 seconds with his McLaren at Interlagos, just .055 in front of teammate Jenson Button.

Vettel's Red Bull teammate Mark Webber will start third after a lap of 1:12.581, with Vettel behind him following a run of 1:12.760.

Ferrari's Felipe Massa was fifth after clocking 1:12.987, while teammate Alonso only managed a lap of 1:13.253, hurting his chances of overtaking Vettel for the championship.

Vettel needs to finish fourth or better on Sunday to become F1's youngest three-time champion at age 25. Alonso, also seeking his third title, needs at least a podium finish to have any chance of overcoming a 13-point deficit in the standings.

Vettel said a mistake at the end of the qualifying session cost him a chance to start closer to the front, but he didn't think the result was "a disaster."

"Maybe it's not the best position that we could've gotten, but still we can be quite happy" he said. "I think there are more people behind us than in front of us. If we were 24th, than that would be disappointing, but I'm happy with fourth and there's plenty of opportunities for tomorrow in terms of tactics."

Hamilton, who won the 2008 championship at Interlagos, will be driving his last race with McLaren before joining Mercedes next season. He is coming off a victory at the United States GP last week.

"I think we put ourselves in a really good position and we are just going to do the best that we can from here, working together as a team," Hamilton said.

McLaren has been strong all weekend and seems set to play a role at the title showdown between Vettel and Alonso. Hamilton led the practice times on Friday and Button did the same earlier on Saturday. Vettel was always close behind the McLarens, while Alonso was well behind the pace.

Drivers had faced very warm temperatures during practice but it dropped significantly for qualifying. It started raining about half an hour before the timed session but it stopped by the time the cars hit the track. The top teams waited several minutes to avoid the slippery conditions at the tricky 2.8-mile track in South America's biggest city.

Michael Schumacher, preparing for his final race before retiring for a second time, couldn't do much with his Mercedes and will start 14th.

Mexican Sergio Perez, taking over Hamilton's seat at McLaren, will start 13th with his Sauber.

Lotus driver Romain Grosjean didn't make it past the first qualifying session after running into the back of Pedro de la Rosa while trying to make a pass at the front straight. He got off the throttle to avoid running into the slower HRT but it was not enough, forcing him to return to the pits for a new front wing.

Vettel enters the deciding race in a comfortable position to win his third title. He has been dominant recently, finishing on the podium in the last six races and winning four of them.

A fourth-place finish will be enough on Sunday even if Alonso wins the race. And if the Ferrari driver is second, Vettel can clinch the title by crossing the line seventh or better. The German driver holds the tiebreaker because he has more wins than Alonso ? five to three.

Vettel has a chance to become the first driver to win three titles in a row since Schumacher won five straight from 2000-04. The only other driver to win at least three consecutive titles was Juan Manuel Fangio from 1954-57.

Alonso hasn't won a race since the German GP in July, but he finished on the podium in six of the final seven races, including the last four.

It will be the sixth time since 2005 that the F1 season will be decided at the Brazilian GP. Alonso won both of his titles at Interlagos in 2005 and '06.

Red Bull has won the last three races at the track, with Vettel second to teammate Webber last year.

Schumacher, F1's most successful driver, retired for the first time in 2006 after winning seven world titles. He returned in 2010 with Mercedes, but struggled and managed only one podium finish, at the European GP in July.
