Solar Decathlon Embeds in Washington, D.C. [Slide Show]

2011-solar-villageSOLAR VILLAGE: Oddly shaped homes sprout like mushrooms across a rainy corner of Washington, D.C., parkland, each a contestant in the nation's fifth solar decathlon. Image: Courtesy of DOE

Homes shaped like a cocoon, a mound and a Y now stand in a park adjacent to the National Mall, looking for a ray of sunshine. Amidst the brouhaha surrounding the loan to solar-module manufacturer Solyndra, the latest "solar decathlon" competition begins today, September 23, in Washington, D.C.?leading to a cohort of 20 innovative solar homes standing in West Potomac Park.

Since 2002 the U.S. Department of Energy has put on such a competition every couple of years, aiming to train students in the art of solar building. The idea is to challenge the teams of college students to "design, build and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient and attractive." Judge the latter for yourself in the following pictures.

View slide show of 2011 solar decathlon entrants.

The rules of the competition are simple: design the kind of house described above and assemble it in Washington, D.C., for judging. Then juries of experts evaluate each entrant on architecture, appeal, engineering, communications (meaning how well the designers explain their house to others), affordability, comfort, hot water production, appliance efficiency, home entertainment (ecofriendly dinner parties and movie nights with your neighbors!), and, finally, how much energy the house actually produces. And you can participate, too, by helping vote for the "People's Choice Award."

The goal is to glean some of the bright ideas from these homes and embed them in the real world. The idea has proved so popular that similar competitions have spread to Europe (next event, spring 2012) and, most recently, China (mark your calendars for 2013).

For the past two U.S. decathlons, sunny Team Germany triumphed, making them the team to beat?except that they're aren't competing this time. That leaves the solar field wide open, especially because there is a spending limit to ensure that no one simply buys victory with the most expensive and efficient technology. The winner will be announced on October 4, but the true victors enjoying the solar spoils of this competition may be future home-owners.

Siblings planned life in Mexico after crime spree (AP)

WALSENBURG, Colo. ? A sister and two brothers had planned to head to Mexico with money stolen in a Georgia bank robbery, then obtain fraudulent documents and elude authorities before the trio, now accused in a cross-country crime spree, were caught in Colorado, a detective said.

The details in the case emerged during a hearing Tuesday, with Colorado Springs police Det. Larry Dyer saying the youngest of the three, Ryan Edward Dougherty, 21, told him that he hatched the idea the day he was sentenced to register as a sex offender. Dougherty had earlier been convicted of sending sexually explicit text messages to an 11-year-old girl.

"During the interview, he pretty much led me to believe that he was the mastermind of this plan," Dyer said.

Colorado District Judge Claude Appel ruled that prosecutors had enough evidence to place Dougherty, his brother Dylan Stanley-Dougherty, 26, and their sister Lee Grace Dougherty, 29, on trial for crimes related to a high-speed chase and shootout during capture.

The siblings are accused of robbing a bank in Georgia and shooting at police officers in Florida and Colorado. They're also suspected in two car thefts in Utah.

The siblings haven't entered pleas. A scheduling conference was set for Friday.

The search for the Doughertys ended Aug. 10 near Walsenburg, about 150 miles south of Denver, following a chase on Interstate 25. The chase began when the trio was spotted near Colorado City.

An FBI agent testified Tuesday that the siblings were prepared for a gun battle and officers said they heard gunshots during the chase.

Agent Daniel Leyman said investigators found at least nine firearms in or near the siblings' car, including two AK-47-type rifles, two machine pistols, two shotguns and three handguns. All but one of the weapons was loaded.

The Doughertys are accused of firing an AK-47 at pursuing officers before running over spike strips, blowing a tire, rolling their vehicle and crashing into a guardrail. No officers were hit by the automatic weapon fire. Authorities said Lee Grace Dougherty was shot in the leg after getting out of the crashed vehicle and aiming a gun at an officer.

Dyer and two FBI agents who interviewed the other two siblings testified that all three told them they never intended to hurt police.

"The only reason (for firing at police) would be to disable a police officer's vehicle and not injure a police officer," Dyer said.

Both Dylan Dougherty and Lee Grace Dougherty said they fired at police in Florida. None of the siblings said who fired shots in Colorado.

Additional details also emerged on the trio's alleged bank robbery. Lee Grace Dougherty was to be the lookout and keep the bank's door open, Dylan Dougherty was to take control of the room, and Ryan's role was to jump over the counter and take the money, authorities said.

The trio made off with about $5,200 in the Georgia bank robbery and had spent about $1,000 of it by the time police caught up with them in Colorado, authorities said.

Before getting to Colorado, the trio traveled through Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi, as well as Texas, where they obtained a license plate near Dallas, Dyer testified.

Dyer said the trio took back roads in their travels to avoid authorities and got lost while in Mississippi, even though they had a GPS system.

He said Ryan Dougherty refused to turn on the GPS, fearing it might contain a tracking device.

Each sibling is charged with five counts of attempted second-degree murder and five counts of first-degree assault, with each of those charges carrying a separate sentence enhancing charge of a being crime of violence.

Each of the three also is charged with vehicle theft, theft by receiving, and displaying fictitious or altered license plates. Each is being held on a $1.25 million bond.

Competitors circle around as Netflix stumbles (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Missteps by Netflix Inc (NFLX.O) have opened the door to competitors to grab disgruntled customers looking for new options for video rentals and instant online streaming.

Blockbuster, the once-dominant video store chain that Netflix pushed into bankruptcy, wants to reclaim its crown as the current king of video rentals struggles. Now a unit of Dish Network Corp (DISH.O), Blockbuster is expected to announce its jump into the streaming market on Friday.

That would better position Blockbuster to compete with Netflix, now facing a subscriber backlash over a price increase for DVD subscribers and pressure from Hollywood studios to pay more for content. The shares of the one-time Wall Street darling have plummeted 50 percent in two months, spurring an apology from CEO Reed Hastings to try to win customers back.

"It's the right time for Blockbuster," said Brean Murray analyst Todd Mitchell, who has a "buy" rating on Dish shares. "They are attached to Dish Network and they have distribution."

Blockbuster is gunning for unhappy Netflix customers with a free-trial offer. The company also advertises that it gets many new movie releases 28 days earlier than Netflix or Coinstar Inc's (CSTR.O) Redbox kiosks, another competitor that could benefit from Netflix's missteps.

Netflix sparked anger with a price increase as high as 60 percent, or $6 a month, for some DVD subscribers and by putting the DVD and streaming services on separate websites.

Last week, Netflix cut its subscriber forecast by 1 million, saying it now expects to have 24 million subscribers at the end of the third quarter. The last time Netflix reported a subscriber decline was the second quarter of 2007 when Blockbuster was aggressively pushing a DVD rental package called Total Access.

Redbox looks likely to gain customers from the outrage over the Netflix price increase, which took effect earlier this month, industry analysts said. The $1-per-DVD Redbox price may appeal to customers searching for a cheaper option without a fixed monthly cost, said Merriman Capital analyst Eric Wold, who has a "neutral" rating on Netflix and a "buy" on Coinstar.

While Netflix sees its future in streaming, "low-cost physical (disc) rentals continue to be popular," said Matthew Lieberman, who studies consumer attitudes toward video content as head of the entertainment, media and communications practice at accounting and consulting firm PwC.

800-POUND GORILLA

Netflix remains the industry heavyweight and has defended its strategy. Chief Financial Officer David Wells told investors on Wednesday the company remained well-positioned to take advantage of growth opportunities in the United States and abroad.

On Thursday, the company unveiled a feature that lets subscribers in Canada and Latin America share what they watch on Netflix with friends on Facebook. The feature will not be available in the United States because of a 1980s law the company said created confusion about what information can be legally shared about watching videos.

Looming in the background are other media and technology heavyweights that could make a big push into streaming, and the "for sale" sign hanging on popular online video service Hulu.

Recent Netflix challenges, including higher content costs, "has waken up the idea of competition. A lot of people could do it," said Hudson Square Research analyst Daniel Ernst, who has a "sell" rating on Netflix.

Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) has started beefing up its streaming video offerings and is among possible suitors for Hulu alongside Google Inc (GOOG.O), DirecTV Group (DIRV.OB) and Dish. New bids are due this week, although sources familiar with the process said the auction could be derailed completely.

Hulu is owned by News Corp (NWSA.O), Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) and Comcast Corp's (CMCSA.O) NBC Universal and private equity firm Providence Equity Partners.

Apple Inc (AAPL.O), which sells video through iTunes, also could be a strong competitor if it made a big push into the streaming rental market, Morningstar analyst Michael Corty said.

"When you talk competition ... we are in the early stages of that game," Corty added.

Compression experiments lead to shocking results

ScienceDaily (Sep. 23, 2011) ? Using acceleration 1 trillion times faster than a jet fighter in a maximum turn, researchers have gained new insight into dynamic compression of aluminum at ultrahigh strain rates.

Controlled shock compression has been used for decades to examine the behavior of materials under extreme conditions of pressure and temperature.

Using an ultrafast spectroscopic technique (used to track shocks on a time scale of ten trillionths of a second), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory scientists Jonathan Crowhurst, Michael Armstrong, Kim Knight, Joseph Zaug and Elaine Behymer measured breakouts (driven by laser-induced shocks) in aluminum thin films with accelerations in the range of 10 trillion g's. The research appears in the Sept. 23 edition of the journal Physical Review Letters.

"The details of how solid materials rapidly deform on sub-micron-length scales have been the subject of speculation for decades," Armstrong said. "For the first time, our experiments can test fundamental scaling laws on time and length scales where they may start to break down at strain rates that are orders of magnitude larger than previously examined."

"In solids, a sufficiently large amplitude shock produces irreversible plastic deformation and relaxes the initial stress," Crowhurst said. "As the amplitude continues to increase, and if the shock drive is maintained, a steady-wave shock profile evolves, which propagates indefinitely without change in form."

But the team said that a fundamental understanding of shock-induced deformation is still lacking. In particular, little is understood about the behavior of materials, including metals, during the initial phase of shock compression and at high strain rates.

"Our original goal was not too ambitious," Crowhurst said. "We only wanted to show that measurements on ultrafast time scales could achieve consistency with longer time scale experiments. We did this, but then got a surprise - unexpected insight into shock wave phenomena."

The researchers measured shock rises in aluminum and obtained shock stresses, shock widths and strain rates. They used the information to test the validity, at ultrahigh strain rates, of the invariance of the dissipative action, as well as the dependence of the strain rate on the shock stress.

Though completely destroyed at the end of the experiment, the research team was able to see the aluminum being compressed to 400,000 atmospheres in about 20 trillionths of a second.

How To Fully Automate Your Website So You Don't Waste Time ...

So you don?t have a way of managing all of the customer responses coming through your inbox? I can relate, please let me share a personal story.

When I first started my online business, I didn?t know what an autoresponder was, and I was intimidated by setting one up on my site. I simply had an HTML form set up that would send e-mail address of people that wanted my newsletter straight to my inbox. I can only imagine the amount of money that I was leaving on the table. I had no way of responding back to my potential customers. When I saw a newsletter signup come into my inbox, I would copy and paste a reply back to them.

The times have changed. Not only is the above situation not acceptable, but there?s no way you can effectively grow your business without an autoresponder.

After all, since you now have your website set up to sell your e-book, you are going to need a way to handle the various types of correspondence being sent to you from potential customers.

Autoresponders are an effective and economical innovation (software program) designed to ?respond? to any messages a website receives. Thousands of online businesses use autoresponders to send a confirmation ?thank you? notice when anyone registers with their email address on the site. Think of them as an answering machine for your website.

Using an autoresponder is a critical component to having a successful ebook business. Not only do you need to respond to messages and inquiries, you must implement an email sales campaign to promote your ebook. If you were to try to manage the emails yourself, the task will eventually become impractical and extremely time consuming. You could hire someone to answer them, but when your site is receiving several hundred hits a day with an average of 50% registering to receive more information; you would need to hire several people thus making the cost very prohibitive. In business, ?time is money and money is time?, and online, and autoresponder is the only solution.

If you do not have an autoresponder, you will lose sales, and lots of them. If you are not using an auto email program to get these non-committals to return to your site, you will not be able to sell your ebook to them. It?s really as simple as that.

How does an autorepsonder work? By utilizing the information you input into the programs, the Autoresponder will automatically answer any email or sign-up your site receives. You can even program a variety of responses and how many times you want to send your customers an email; plus any sales receipts, download information and access, support problems ? can all be effectively handled by an autoresponder. Obviously if there is a support situation, you or your webmaster will need to step in and fix the problem, but the autoresponder can easily let the customer know that someone will be emailing them soon to help.

Due to the nature of your business (e-book sales), you will need a variety of email autoresponses depending upon the situation. A typical list of responses for an e-book sales site might include some or all of the following:

1) Thank you response for visiting and signing up;

2) Free newsletter emailed to all sign-ups;

3) Special offer emails to entice purchase;

4) Purchase notification/invoice;

5) Thank you for purchasing;

6) Informing of your newest e-book;

7) Offer free course/bonus for signing up;

8)? Notification of problems/complaints received from customers;

9) Notification of feedback received.

Basically the uses of the program are endless, in fact anything that you would want emailed to several customers can be handled through an autoresponder. And just like the almost limitless uses, there are a vast number of autoresponder companies vying to handle your e-business correspondence.

Many sites have free autoresponder programs available which handle minimal email tasks; however because you are trying to sell ebooks, you should look for a system or service that does not limit the capabilities of your emails. Make sure you get unlimited email size plus you will need the ability to send multiple emails to the same person over a period of time. Remember, the reason for sending several emails over a course of time is based on the fact that most customers (about 60% ? 70%) do not purchase on their first visit. If they are interested in learning more about your ebook, they will sign up for more information. And this is when you use an autoresponder to send multiple targeted information emails to drive those reluctant customers back to your site for the purchase. You will also want to have the ability to track your emails to assess the effectiveness of such a campaign. We use www.aweber.com and www.getresponse.com is also a good solution.

The messages you will want to send will depend upon the reason for the need to respond. One way you can handle this by having multiple email addresses for your site. Here is a short list of email addresses you will need:

1) support@yoursite.com

2) Yourname@yoursite.com

3) Yourassistant@yoursite.com

4) sales@yoursite.com

If you need additional addresses, do not hesitate to set them up and use them; the more you categorize your customer?s emails, the better you, your webmaster and your autorepsonder program will work. The autoresponder will know the difference between newsletter sign-ups, customer logins, purchases, and so on. This is all configured in the program, as is sending notification emails for receipt of a customer?s inquiry at one of your listed email addresses. Again, you or your webmaster will manually have to answer any inquiries received at a site listed address. Unfortunately at this moment in time, autoresponders cannot read and answer emails. I would imagine that sometime in the not too distance future this will become a possibility. One can always hope!

Now you understand why autoresponders are an important if not critical ingredient in developing a productive, functioning, 24/7 e-book sales site. Using one will help increase your sales, drive those hesitant potential customers back to your site and take care of those everyday tasks associated with having a professional and courteous Internet business. Offering excellent customer service is a significant business building tool, especially for online businesses when a customer assesses you and your site faster than you realize.

Genes May Explain Blacks' Bleaker Prostate Cancer Stats ...

20th September 2011 ????? 0 Comments

TUESDAY, Sept. 20 (HealthDay News) ? Differences in the genetic makeup of prostate cells could explain why black men in the United States are more likely to get prostate cancer and die from it than white men, a new study suggests.

?There are a lot of socioeconomic and environmental factors that create differences in levels of prostate cancer in these two groups,? study co-author Bi-Dar Wang, assistant research professor of pharmacology and physiology at the George Washington University Medical Center, said in a news release from the American Association for Cancer Research. ?We?ve found that genetic elements play a role in these disparities as well.?

The researchers analyzed samples of prostate tissue from black and white men. They found that the two races had ?population specific? messenger RNA (mRNA) and microRNA. The differences appear to affect how prostate cancer tumors form or stop forming.

?It is still too early to conclude any novel treatment strategy based on our results,? Wang said. ?However, the genomic analyses of prostate cancers have revealed that differential mRNA and microRNA expression and the associated gene network rewriting may be critical in prostate cancer health disparities.?

Wang said the findings will advance current knowledge on the mechanisms responsible for racial differences in prostate cancer and may help improve detection and treatment strategies for African American men.

The study was scheduled to be released Tuesday at the American Association for Cancer Research Conference on the Science of Cancer Health Disparities in Washington D.C. Research presented at meetings should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

IRA Retirement PlanSafe Places of Investing in Bear Market | The ...

Retain Five Years? Worth of Spending in Financial Accounts

An IRA retirement account is a great way to have control over what stocks are being invested in. The owner of the account has the power of decision regarding what stocks to buy and how much to contribute. Currently, the stock market is a bear market, and until the bulls arrive, the best thing to do is use funds from a cash reserve. Financial advisors suggest avoiding any sales of stocks. The vice-president of Charles Schwab %26 Co. suggests that each investor should have at least 5 years? worth of spending money in available financial accounts. During the first year, cash deposits and mutual funds should be used. Following that year, long-term certificates of deposit and short-term bonds should be used.

If you are still in the work force, take part of your paycheck and place it into a liquid account. Continue making contributions to your traditional IRA accounts, as well as any other retirement accounts you may hold. This includes Traditional IRA retirement accounts and Roth IRA accounts. If you are retired and are using your retirement savings to live on, the best thing to do is place mutual fund distributions into a money-market fund. This is the best alternative to reinvesting.

Home Equity %26 Line of Credit Investments

If you do not want to dip into your accounts, a home-equity loan is a great way to get some emergency funds. It may be difficult to get a line of credit due to the falling home values, but your lender may approve the loan, especially if you have a lot of equity in the home. If you already have a line of credit, it may be beneficial to consider taking the money out and placing it in safe investments. John Ulzheimer, the president of consumer education at Credit.com, warns individuals that this process will reflect the debt on your credit report.

Cash Funds Investments

Despite the failing stock market, there are safe places for cash. Banks are one of the safest places to place your cash funds. Through the end of this year, Congress has raised the federal limit for deposit insurance. It reflects an increase from $100,000 to $250,000. Yet another safe place for cash with guaranteed principle protection and guaranteed tax free rates of return is Roth on Roids.

Certificates of Deposit Investments

Still another safe investment is certificates of deposit. These are usually available through small banks and credit unions. It is also possible to get a good deal on a certificate through an online bank.

Money Funds Investments

If you have new funds, watch for funds with high yields. They are usually more risky than other investments. The best way to keep your money safe is to choose a money fund that offers a yield that is within a few points of the target rate set by the Federal Reserve?s federal funds rate.

After reviewing your entire portfolio, which should include your IRA retirement account, mutual funds, bonds and other stock investments, there are still other things to consider. Making sure you will maintain the money you have already saved for retirement is the ultimate goal here.

Credit Score

Take any steps possible to raise your credit score. This can be done by consolidating debt and reducing the number of credit cards you use, especially those with high interest. A good credit score will be a huge asset in the future.

Withdrawing from your IRA?

Individuals that planned for retirement by opening an IRA account may be on the losing end these days. Typically, to make use of IRA retirement income, the rule of thumb is to withdraw 4% of the retirement savings during the first year of retirement. Each following year should increase by 3%. It may not be in the best interest of retirees to follow this rule during the bear market. How much you are able to withdraw will depend on the IRA withdrawal rules. They differ for traditional and Roth IRA accounts.

The suggested 4% may be too much for recent retirees. If they withdraw while the market is declining, it will be very difficult to recoup these losses. This is where a Roth IRA can be of benefit. Based on Roth IRA rules, there are no required withdrawals when an individual reaches 70 ?, and the person can continue to contribute to the account. This is a great way to continue saving and building your nest egg for when the market begins to climb again.

Those who were planning to retire soon may want to reconsider their decision. Working for another year or two will not only provide you with steady income, but will also aid in building your current portfolio and raising the amounts in your IRA accounts.

Save on Taxes: Transferring from Traditional to Roth IRA

Do whatever is possible to save on taxes. One way to do this is to undo a Roth IRA conversion. If your IRA account has decreased because of the market, you will be paying taxes on the amount that has been lost. For example, if you began with $100,000 in traditional IRA accounts, the accounts are now worth less because of the market downfall. If you converted to a Roth IRA, the beginning balance of the accounts for the year would be taxed. That means you would be taxed on the $100,000, not the lesser amount that is currently in the accounts.

Despite the downward spiral of the economy, there are ways to continue saving and ways to protect your retirement savings. Even with their limitations, IRA retirement accounts continue to be one of the best options when planning for retirement, regardless of the stock market standings.
