94% Weekend

All Critics (49) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (46) | Rotten (3)

It's a definitive example of naturalistic moviemaking -- you feel you're breathing the air that the characters are breathing.

Its final moments offer a vision of what a contemporary romance can achieve: an appreciative gasp of truth, a wet-eyed hope for more.

One of the truest, most beautiful movies ever made about two strangers.

If you've ever met someone who changed your life in the space of days, you'll relate to something in this movie.

The organ that "Weekend" is most concerned with isn't the one you might think, but the human heart.

In just a short period of time, a weekend hookup tests the boundaries each man has set for himself.

Cullen and New are British stage actors with little background in film. Haigh's only previous film was a documentary. Perhaps because they don't feel bound by a set of rules, they've created one of the year's most enjoyable surprises.

Weekend is the year's wittiest hymn to romance.

Weekend might be a small film recounting an intimate relationship, but it speaks to the grandest of ideas.

By the end of their weekend together, it feels like you know these guys and, even better, like you're rooting for them.

A heartfelt romantic comedy, a touching rumination on sexual identity and a striking look at what it is to be gay in 21st Century Britain.

Like Before Sunrise, the real joy of writer/director Andrew Haigh's film is in watching two people make bedrooms, overpasses, kitchenettes, and couches feel alive with potent conversation and pregnant silences.

While you might appreciate its goal, the writing and execution aren't strong enough to reach it.

It's a thrill to watch, just as it's thrilling to be in the hands of such a gifted new filmmaking talent.

This appealing gay-themed drama, written and directed with intelligence by Andrew Haigh, is a British cousin to the American mumblecore movement...

The story is simply told with a lot of talking, some loving and much philosophizing over the meaning of life. The good thing is that [writer-director-editor] Andrew Haigh wears all his hats well and shows a deft hand at all his chores.

The results are gently sincere but maybe a little misguided, a far cry from the note-perfect, transcendently adorable 1999 gay love story "Trick," which this one reminds of?and pales in comparison to.

It's equally as chatty as [Before Sunrise and Before Sunset], but the dialogue is more to the point, less cerebral, and below the belt.

Missouri beats No. 16 Texas A&M 38-31 in OT

No. 16 Texas A&M fell apart in the second half. Again.

The Aggies led by 11 at halftime, but James Franklin's 11-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Lucas in overtime completed Missouri's rally in a 38-31 win.

Texas A&M got the ball after the score, but Ryan Tannehill's pass on fourth down was deflected.

Tannehill threw for three touchdowns in the first half, but the Aggies managed only a field goal after that to lose their third game this season after leading by double digits at halftime.

"Sometimes it's a lack of focus," running back Christine Michael said. "We have to be on one page. We all have to do our part at the same time."

Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman isn't sure why his team keeps having the same problems.

"I just think that we didn't make the plays we needed to make when we needed to make them," Sherman said. "It's definitely something we've got to talk about and get fixed."

The Tigers had a chance to win it in regulation, but a 46-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right as time expired.

Missouri (4-4, 2-3 Big 12) got the ball when Jacquies Smith caused a fumble by Tannehill, which was recovered by Dominique Hamilton.

Missouri took a 31-28 lead on an 11-yard run by Henry Josey with about eight minutes left. Texas A&M (5-3, 3-2) tied it on a 35-yard field goal about four minutes later.

The loss is devastating for a team that entered the season ranked in the top 10 with a goal of winning the Big 12 title.

"We're a team that had high expectations coming into the year," Texas A&M linebacker Sean Porter said. "It's bad. It's not what we expected at all and we need to play a lot better as a team."

Franklin threw for 198 yards and two scores and ran for 97 yards and two more touchdowns. Josey, the Big 12's leading rusher, had 20 carries for 162 yards.

It was the fifth 100-yard game for Josey and his second in a row.

Missouri has won two straight over the Aggies and unlike the rest of the Big 12 schools, the Tigers could face them again next year. Missouri is expected to soon join Texas A&M in a move to the Southeastern Conference.

Missouri took its first lead of the second half on the 11-yard touchdown run by Josey. To get that drive going, Josey bounced to the outside and dashed down the sideline for 43 yards before being dragged down from behind.

The Tigers went for it on fourth-and-1 from the Texas A&M 43 early in the fourth quarter and Franklin's run was short. Missouri made up for it when Tannehill was hit as he threw a pass which was intercepted by Randy Ponder.

Ponder returned it 45 yards and Franklin cut A&M's lead to 28-24 when he scored on an 8-yard run three plays later.

Tannehill thought that was one key to the game.

"It was a huge play that turned the field position and took points off the board for us," Tannehill said.

Both teams lost fumbles in the third quarter. Texas A&M's Ryan Swope fumbled after a catch, but Missouri gave it back three plays later when Josey coughed it up. The Aggies didn't capitalize on that error and neither team scored in the quarter.

Tannehill hit Cyrus Gray on a short pass and he ran into the corner of the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown to tie the game at 14 early in the second quarter. Missouri's offense stalled on the next drive and they had to punt. The punt was shanked and it went just 22 yards, giving A&M the ball at the Missouri 41.

The Aggies took advantage of the short field when Tannehill found Swope for a 6-yard touchdown pass take a 21-14 lead in the second quarter.

Texas A&M pushed its advantage to 28-14 when Tannehill scored on a 3-yard touchdown run with about three minutes left in the second quarter.

The Tigers had a first down from the Texas A&M 11 late in the second quarter, but the offense stalled and they settled for a 26-yard field goal to make it 28-17 at halftime.

Franklin broke four tackles on a nifty 20-yard run on third-and-1 to give Missouri a 7-0 lead on the team's second drive of the game.

Tannehill's first touchdown pass was a 2-yard strike to Michael Lamothe that tied it at 7-all later in the first quarter.

Eric Waters caught a pass from Franklin and two Texas A&M defenders missed tackles as he dashed 42 yards for a touchdown to put Missouri back on top 14-7 with two seconds left in the first quarter.

Michael had 21 carries for 104 yards and Gray added 58 yards rushing.

(AP) ? The main river coursing through Thailand's capital swelled to record highs Friday, briefly flooding riverside buildings and an ornate royal complex at high tide amid fears that flood defenses could break and swamp the heart of the city.

Ankle-high water from the Chao Phraya river spilled through one sandbagged entranceway of Bangkok's treasured Grand Palace, which once housed the kingdom's monarchy. The army was pumping out the water, and tourists were still entering the white-walled compound.

The river has filled roads outside the palace gates for days, but the water has receded with the tides, leaving streets dry again.

But the higher-than-normal tides in the Gulf of Thailand, expected to peak Saturday, are obstructing the flood runoff from the north, and there are fears the overflows could swamp parts of downtown. The government also is worried major barriers and dikes could break.

The flood walls protecting much of the inner city are 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) high, and Saturday's high tide is expected to reach 2.6 meters (8.5 feet).

Friday's morning high tide passed without a major breach, but the waters briefly touched riverside areas closer to the city's central business districts of Silom and Sathorn.

"It is clear that although the high tides haven't reached 2.5 meters, it was high enough to prolong the suffering of those living outside of the flood walls and to threaten those living behind deteriorating walls," Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said.

Seven of Bangkok's 50 districts ? all in the northern outskirts ? are heavily flooded, and residents have fled aboard bamboo rafts and army trucks and by wading in waist-deep water. Eight other districts have seen less serious flooding.

New flooding was reported Friday in the city's southeast when a canal overflowed in a neighborhood on the outer parts of Sukhumvit Road.

The floods, the heaviest in Thailand in more than half a century, have drenched a third of the country's provinces, killed close to 400 people and displaced more than 110,000 others. The water has crept from the central plains south toward the Gulf of Thailand, but Bangkok is in the way. The capital is literally surrounded by behemoth pools of water flowing around and through the city via a complex network of canals and rivers.

Economic analysts say the floods have cut Thailand's 2011 GDP projections by as much as 2 percentage points. Damage estimates of $6 billion could double if floods swamp Bangkok.

Most of Bangkok, however, has remained dry and most of its more than 9 million residents were staying put to protect their homes. Still, fears the inner city could flood have fueled an exodus as Thais and expatriates alike seek refuge outside Bangkok and foreign governments urge their citizens to avoid unessential travel to the threatened city.

The U.S. State Department cautioned against all but essential travel to areas of Thailand affected by the flooding, including Bangkok, because of transportation difficulties and shortages of certain food items.

On Thursday, an emotional Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra acknowledged her government could not control the deluge.

"What we're doing today is resisting the force of nature," Yingluck told reporters. She said the water bearing down on Bangkok was so massive that "we cannot resist all of it."

Flooding has closed Bangkok's Don Muang airport, mainly used for domestic flights, but Thailand's main international airport is operating as usual.

The government's Flood Relief Operations Center says its contingency plan involves the Thai military and government agencies transporting people from evacuation points in the capital to outlying provinces.

Hague court says in talks on Gaddafi son surrender (Reuters)

THE HAGUE (Reuters) ? International war crimes prosecutors are in touch with Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, urging him to give himself up and warning him Friday he risks a mid-air interception if he tries to flee by plane to an African safe haven.

Confirming reports from Libya's new leadership to Reuters that the fugitive son and heir-apparent of slain strongman Muammar Gaddafi has been negotiating a possible surrender, the International Criminal Court said in a statement: "Through intermediaries, we have informal contact with Saif."

It gave no details on the younger Gaddafi's whereabouts but said it was "galvanising efforts" to arrest him and former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi, both of whom Libyan officials have said are being sheltered by Tuareg nomads in the Sahara, in the borderlands of Libya and Niger.

"Additionally," ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo said, "We have learnt through informal channels that there is a group of mercenaries who are offering to move Saif to an African (country) not party to the Rome Statute of the ICC.

"The Office of the Prosecutor is also exploring the possibility to intercept any plane within the air space of a state party in order to make an arrest."

Some observers suggest surrendering to the ICC may be only one option for Saif al-Islam, 39, who may alternatively hope for a welcome in one of the African states his father helped. NTC officials have said Saif al-Islam might consider surrender his safest option given his father's killing.

Officials with Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) have said they believe African mercenaries, including from South Africa, were acting as bodyguards for Saif al-Islam as he took refuge in Bani Walid, a pro-Gaddafi bastion near Tripoli, and then fled south as his father was captured, abused and killed.

A South African newspaper said Thursday that a plane was on standby there to fly north and rescue Saif al-Islam along with a group of South Africans working for him. This could not be independently verified.

"If we reach agreement, logistical measures for his transfer will be taken," ICC spokesman Fadi El Abdallah said in The Hague Friday, adding that a transfer might still "require some time" to be arranged.

"It is not possible to discuss logistics or make presumptions about what is needed at this stage. There are different scenarios depending on what country he is in."

The ICC has no police force of its own, and therefore has to rely on state co-operation to have suspects arrested.

AFRICAN OPTIONS

Niger, where another of the elder Gaddafi's sons has found refuge, has said it will honor treaty commitments with the ICC, meaning it should extradite any indicted suspect. The ICC has indicted the elder Gaddafi, Saif al-Islam and Senussi for crimes against humanity after the killing of protesters who demonstrated against Gaddafi's 42-year rule in February.

Among other neighboring states on which Gaddafi lavished some of Libya's oil wealth in pursuit of an anti-colonial, pan-African policy, Chad, Burkina Faso and Mali are also signatories to the Rome Statute of the ICC. So are South Africa and Tunisia.

Those which are not signatories, and so might be in a position to ignore extradition requests, include Algeria, Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Sudan and Zimbabwe. It is not clear any of those nations would welcome the fugitive Gaddafi.

Algeria has taken in the wife and three surviving children of Muammar Gaddafi, angering its Libyan neighbors.

In France, one of the key initial backers of the revolt against Gaddafi, Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero was asked about reports that Saif al-Islam might have made it across Algeria or Niger to Mali, a former French colony. He said Paris had little information but added:

"This man's place is before the international criminal court ... We don't care whether he goes on foot, by plane, by boat, by car or on a camel, the only thing that matters is that he belongs in the ICC.

"We don't have many details, but the sooner the better."

FAIR TRIAL

The ICC's Moreno-Ocampo said in his statement: "If he surrenders to the ICC, he has the right to be heard in court, he is innocent until proven guilty. The judges will decide.

"This is a legal process and if the judges decide that Saif is innocent, or has served his sentence, he can request the judges to send him to a different country as long as that country accepts him."

Earlier this week a senior Libyan NTC official told Reuters that the London-educated Saif al-Islam was trying to arrange for an aircraft to fly him out of his desert refuge and into the custody of the war crimes court.

Details are sketchy but a picture has built up since his father's killing while in the hands of NTC fighters a week ago that suggests the man once seen as heir-apparent has taken refuge among Sahara nomads and is seeking a safe haven abroad.

One NTC official said Thursday that Saif al-Islam had crossed into Niger but had not yet found a way to hand himself in: "There is a contact with Mali and with South Africa and with another neighboring country to organize his exit.

"He hasn't got confirmation yet, he's still waiting."

WIN OR DIE

Even if Saif can still draw on some of the fortune the Gaddafi clan built up during 42 years in control of North Africa's main oilfields, his indictment by the ICC over his part in trying to crush this year's revolt limits his options.

That may explain an apparent willingness, in communications monitored by intelligence services and shared with Libya's interim rulers, to discuss a surrender to the ICC, whereas his mother and surviving siblings simply fled to Algeria and Niger.

Saif al-Islam was once seen as a potential liberal reformer but who adopted a belligerent, win-or-die persona at his father's side this year. The ICC accuses him of hiring mercenaries to carry out a predetermined plan to kill protesters.

Rhissa Ag Boula, a former Tuareg rebel leader who is now a presidential adviser in Niger, told Reuters on Thursday: "Abdullah al-Senussi is now in northern Mali. He crossed Niger north of Arlit escorted by Malian Tuareg as well as some from Niger. They were well protected, which is to say armed. As for Saif, he is hesitant and is indeed in Niger. He is trying to decide whether to continue to Mali or stay in Niger."

A member of the Malian parliament who has been in charge of relations with Libya's NTC discounted some reports that Gaddafi and Senussi had crossed Algeria or Niger into Mali.

The African Union, and powerful members like South Africa, grumble about the nine-year-old ICC's focus so far on Africans and some of them may prove sympathetic.

Even if arrested on charges relating to his role in attacks on protesters in February and March, Saif could make defense arguments that might limit any sentence, lawyers said.

TSX closes lower on euro zone rescue doubts (Reuters)

TORONTO (Reuters) ? Toronto's main stock index ended moderately lower on Tuesday, giving up earlier gains that took it to a one-month high, as pessimism set in over an upcoming European summit.

World stocks stumbled after the cancellation of a meeting of European finance ministers raised doubts that an upcoming summit will result in a clear plan to rein in Europe's debt crisis.

"The decline we're seeing in the markets broadly may reflect some disappointment yet again that Europe is not going to be a quick fix," said Elvis Picardo, strategist and vice president of research at Global Securities in Vancouver.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index ended down 52.53 points, or 0.43 percent, at 12,109.75.

The index at one point reached 12,230.82, its strongest level since September 20.

"We've had a pretty good rally anticipating a positive outcome (from the European meetings), which I don't think will be as neat and clean as politicians are wont to do," Paul Hand, managing director at RBC Capital Markets, said early in the session.

After being up for most of the day, 8 of the TSX index's 10 main sectors finished lower, with energy and financials leading the charge.

Canadian financial shares have frequently moved in sympathy with their European peers, which have see-sawed on developments in the European debt crisis. Toronto-Dominion Bank was the market's biggest laggard, falling 1.7 percent to C$73.68.

Gold miners were among Toronto's most heavily weighted gainers. Bullion prices roared to one of the biggest one-day rallies in years, as the euro zone jitters and gloomy U.S. consumer data rekindled a dormant safe-haven bid and triggered a flurry of technical buying.

Barrick Gold Corp closed up 3.4 percent at C$48.05. Goldcorp Inc gains 4.1 percent to C$48.34.

Miner Alacer Gold Corp's shares rose 5.5 percent to C$11.56 a day after the company's board approved expansion of its South Kalgoorlie gold operations in Australia.

Meanwhile, Potash Corp shares fell 2.5 percent to C$49.21 on news its competitor, Russian miner Uralkali, announced plans to boost capacity 80 percent by 2021.

On the Canadian earnings front, Canadian Pacific Railway slipped 0.5 percent to C$59.52 after the country's No. 2 railway reported a lower third-quarter profit as fuel costs rose 43 percent.

In other news, the Bank of Canada held its key interest rate steady, dropping any mention of the need to raise rates as it slashed its growth and inflation projections.

Europe stocks rise over Europe deal on Greece debt (AP)

PARIS ? European stock markets shot higher Thursday as investors waded into riskier assets, emboldened by EU leaders' pre-dawn agreement to slash Greece's massive debts.

Oil prices rose above $92 per barrel while the euro gained strongly following the European summit dedicated to fixing a debt mess in Greece before it provokes a bigger debt crisis across the continent.

European trading was buoyant from the outset. Britain's FTSE climbed 2.1 percent to 5,670.12. Germany's DAX jumped 3.7 percent to 6,243 and France's CAC-40 gained 3.9 percent to 3,297. Wall Street also headed toward gains, with Dow Jones industrial futures rising 1.6 percent and S&P 500 futures gaining 1.8 percent.

The Greek market rallied on hopes the early morning deal would finally lift the specter of government bankruptcy.

Shortly after opening Thursday, shares on the Athens Stock Exchange were up 3.46 percent at 800.55, with banking stocks up more than 10 percent ? after suffering heavy losses earlier this week.

The hard-fought European deal requires banks to take on 50 percent losses on Greeks bonds. Eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund will also provide an additional euro100 billion ($140 billion) in rescue loans as a second bailout package for Greece.

EU leaders "stopped the hemorrhaging," said Marc Touati, chief economist at Assya Compagnie Financiere in Paris. "(They) have saved the Eurozone and that's the good news and that's why the markets are reacting positively."

European leaders agreed early Thursday on a plan to provide Greece with more rescue loans to help relieve its crushing debt obligations. It will involve private investors taking bigger losses on the value of their Greek bonds, which would make Greece the first nation that uses the euro currency to be rated in default on its debt.

European Union President Herman Van Rompuy said the deal will reduce Greece's debt to 120 percent of its gross domestic product in 2020. Under current conditions, it would have grown to 180 percent.

In addition, the euro440 billion European Financial Stability Facility will be used to insure part of the losses on the debt of wobbly countries like Italy and Spain, rendering its firepower equivalent to around euro1 trillion ($1.4 trillion).

Loose ends still need to be worked out, and the fundamental problem of low economic growth in the euro zone has not been resolved by the crisis summit, some economists warned.

"(They) have only saved it temporarily," Touati said. "Unfortunately the fundamental problem concerning the absence of growth has not been resolved."

Shares in Asia posted solid gains earlier in the day. Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 2 percent to close at an eight-week high of 8,926.54. South Korea's Kospi added 1.5 percent to 1,922.04. Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 3.3 percent to 19,688.70.

    Australia's S&P/ASX 200 jumped 2.5 percent to 4,348.20 after trading resumed following a 4-hour technical glitch.

Meanwhile, strong economic reports helped send Wall Street higher on Wednesday.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 1.4 percent to 11,869.04. The S&P 500 index rose 1.1 percent to 1,242. The Nasdaq composite added 0.5 percent to 2,650.67.

Reports in the U.S. showed businesses ordered more heavy machinery and other long-lasting manufactured goods last month. That indicates businesses are still spending on equipment despite worries about a weak economy and Europe's debt problems. Sales of new homes rose in September after falling for four straight months.

Benchmark crude for December delivery was up $1.98 at $92.15 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $2.97, or 3.2 percent, to end the day at $90.20 in New York on Wednesday.

Brent crude was up $1.87 at $110.78 a barrel on the ICE Futures Exchange in London.

In currencies, the euro climbed to $1.4003 from $1.3908 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar weakened to 75.83 yen from 76.20 yen.
