Miami Dolphins interview former Titans coach Jeff Fisher

The Miami Herald

The blades on the helicopter began to whirl, a sign the aircraft soon would lift from its station of the last three hours, between the 10- and 15-yard lines on the north practice field of the Dolphins facility.

Former Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher, generally considered one of the proven prizes of this NFL coach hunting season, emerged from the Dolphins office building with former Kansas City Chiefs president Carl Peterson. They chatted until Dolphins owner Stephen Ross came out. All three boarded the helicopter, and Fisher left the facility the same way he arrived Tuesday morning.

The new Dolphins ruling group?

The Dolphins soon after announced what had been obvious ? they had completed the interview process with Fisher. What they didn?t announce was the role of Peterson, a friend of Ross? who has been seen often around the Dolphins since he resigned from Kansas City near the end of the 2008 season. Ross has denied that Peterson has operated on behalf of the Dolphins.

But if Peterson takes a position with the Dolphins ? and several NFL sources have told The Miami Herald that Peterson will be named team president soon ? it almost certainly will be one above general manager Jeff Ireland.

Which makes it interesting that Peterson wasn?t involved in Monday?s interview of interim head coach Todd Bowles, who handled the job after the Dolphins fired Tony Sparano with three games remaining. Nor, NFL sources say, was Peterson present for Tuesday?s start of the interview of Chicago special-teams coordinator Dave Toub. Those were handled by Ross and Ireland.

Fisher has many options, one of which won?t be San Diego. Despite the Chargers? perceived perennial underachievement, including missing the playoffs each of the past two seasons, San Diego announced general manager A.J. Smith and coach Norv Turner will remain with the team through the 2012 season. Between a talented roster headed by quarterback Philip Rivers and being in his native Southern California, the Chargers might have been very attractive to Fisher.

Miami Herald staff writers Armando Salguero and Barry Jackson contributed to this report.

Retrode 2 retro gaming adapter brings SNES / Genesis support to your PC for $85

We were already head over heels for the original Retrode, and we've gotta say -- version 2.0 looks mighty good in that attire. As the story goes, the product shown above is the result of some three years of toiling, with the second iteration handling cartridges for Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo. In fact, there's a pair of ports on here, enabling one cart from each console to be loaded up and carried around. Users need only to find and install an emulator on their machine, plug a cartridge and / or an associated controller into the device and then connect the Retrode 2 to one's computer via USB. Once you've loaded a ROM into your emulator, configured your controller and canceled every appointment on your calendar for the next 48 hours... well, you're in for quite a weekend of retro gaming nirvana. It's up for pre-order now in the source link for $84.99, with shipments expected to begin on January 23rd.

Kragthorpe: Ute motivator, baseball ?Miracle,? memorial ace are favorite stories

Jerry Sloan retired and Greg Ostertag came out of retirement. Deron Williams and Mehmet Okur were traded. Jordan Wynn was injured and Jake Heaps transferred.

The big stories just kept coming, as they always do. Yet when I look back every year, the breaking stories are usually not the ones that stick with me. So these are my favorite stories of 2011:

?The Ute motivator

Jay Rudd would have found a way to join Utah?s football team in El Paso, Texas, for the Sun Bowl, I?m sure. The Utes? season was not the same without Rudd, who died in March after a lengthy illness at age 37. Born with Down syndrome, he was incurably upbeat, as reflected in the short speeches he would deliver to the team after Thursday practices.

The relationship that coach Kyle Whittingham developed with Rudd said a lot about each of them, while illustrating how much a developmentally disabled person could contribute, all because Whittingham treated him as capable and dependable.

Rudd loved being around the Utes. He would have addressed the Utes in El Paso, led the team onto the field and celebrated the victory over Georgia Tech ? and probably taken some credit for it.

? The baseball ?Miracle?

The Miracle League game was one of those events that had an obligatory feel, as an auxiliary part of the Triple-A All-Star Game festivities at Spring Mobile Ballpark. It turned into the best hour of the summer for me.

Story continues below

The patients from the Shriners Hospitals for Children used plastic bats to take whacks at rubber balls, tossed slowly from a few feet away. Most of them used motorized chairs to make their way the around the bases. It was an emotional experience, simply because the children were having so much fun.

?These kids don?t need our pity or us to feel sorry for them,? said Omaha?s Clint Robinson, one of the players who was assigned to act as a buddy, standing with a boy or girl (ages 4-15) in the field and escorting the child around the bases.

Participation was pretty much mandatory for the All-Stars, but they may have benefited the most.

? The memorable ace

Brett Lazar and four other friends of Rick Crankshaw were playing a round in memory of him at Mountain Dell Golf Course in October, carrying a picture of him and acting out how he would play certain shots.

So as Lazar stood on the Lake Course?s No. 9 tee, his teammates in the scramble format were invoking help. ?We really need one, Rick,? one of them said.

Imagine the response when Lazar delivered a hole-in-one. ?I?m not a real religious person,? Bob Haywood said later, but it was like Rick was there. I don?t know how to explain it.?

My story emerged from a simple, special request. Lazar asked if this version of the standard hole-in-one report could be published. Here it is:

(AP) ? South Korea's president opened the door Monday to possible nuclear talks with North Korea and warned the neighboring country to avoid any provocations, saying the Korean peninsula is at a crucial turning point.

Lee Myung-bak's comments in a nationally televised speech come as the young son of the late Kim Jong Il takes power in North Korea as Supreme Commander of the military and ruling party leader after Kim's death last month. The North vowed Sunday in a New Year's message that it would bolster its military and defend the son, Kim Jong Un, "unto death."

"The situation on the Korean peninsula is now entering a new turning point," Lee said. "But there should be a new opportunity amid changes and uncertainty."

Lee warned that South Korea would sternly respond to any North Korean provocation. In 2010, 50 South Koreans died in attacks blamed on the North, though the Koreas have met in recent months for preliminary nuclear discussions.

North Korea, which has tested two atomic devices since 2006, has said it wants to return to long-stalled six-nation talks on halting its nuclear weapons program in return for aid. Washington and Seoul, however, have insisted that the North first show progress on past disarmament commitments.

If North Korea halts its continuing nuclear activities, Lee said in his speech, negotiations could resume.

"We are ready to resolve security concerns on the Korean peninsula and provide assistance to revive North Korea's economy through agreements in the six-nation talks," Lee said.

North Korea, however, has so far taken a hard line toward the South. It warned last week that there would be no softening of its position toward South Korea's government after Kim Jong Il's death. North Korea's powerful National Defense Commission said the country would never deal with Lee.

On Monday, Pyongyang accused Lee of plotting to shake up the North by temporarily placing his troops on high alert after Kim Jong Il's death. The North's main Rodong Sinmun newspaper said in a commentary carried by the official Korean Central News Agency that Lee must "kneel down and apologize" for his acts.

North Korea has regularly criticized Lee since he took office in 2008 and ended a no-strings-attached aid policy toward the North. Lee sought to link aid to progress in North Korea's nuclear disarmament.

The six-nation nuclear talks involve the two Koreas, the United States, China, Russia and Japan.

The Korean peninsula remains technically in a state of conflict because the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

North Korea's New Year's message, however, didn't include the country's routine harsh criticism of the United States and avoided the country's nuclear ambitions, a suggestion that the North may be willing to continue talks with Washington to win food aid.

This year is a crucial one for North Korea as it tries to build a "great, prosperous and powerful nation" befitting the April 2012 centenary of the birth of national founder Kim Il Sung, the new leader's grandfather.

In the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, New Year's Day was cold, snowy and gray, with splashes of bright color provided by flags, lanterns and banners reading "Happy New Year" that decorated the streets. Coming just days after the official mourning period for Kim Jong Il ended, the celebration was muted, unlike past years when cheerful people in their best holiday clothes thronged the streets.

Kim Jong Un, meanwhile, spent part of the day visiting a tank division, state media said, in what was apparently his first reported military field inspection since his father's death. Kim Jong Il regularly visited military units, factories and farms across the country, and his son's trip provided further evidence of the North's intention to link him closely with the military.
