Microsoft sets sandbox boundaries for Metro developers

microsoft-windows-8-apps-developer-sandbox

With so many apps running around the Windows playground, Microsoft wants the grown-ups to be in charge of Metro. Programs for the new interface will be available only through the Windows Store, which will allow one-click installs, user feedback and crash monitoring. Developers shouldn't worry too much, as the heavy lifting for those features will all be handled by the OS. Redmond's demanding some tit-for-tat, however, asking programmers to resist the temptation to invoke APIs not included in the development kit. All the software will be vetted, App-Store style, while access to devices like GPS and cameras must be granted by users before the apps can grab them. We've already seen that the old BSOD is gone, so hopefully this new course plotted by Metro will keep those frowny faces away.

Victoria Advocate | Developer: Pols can't keep approving new casinos

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) - Casinos are not like Starbucks stores: You really can't have one on every corner.

That's the word from David Cordish, whose company is opening a huge new casino next month in Maryland.

Yet Cordish warns that the expansion of casino gambling can't go on unchecked forever. A big problem is the attitude of politicians nationwide who view casinos as free money.

"I don't know how we can control the politicians; they certainly don't understand the word 'oversaturation,'" Cordish said Thursday. "They think you can have casinos like Starbucks."

If that attitude continues, Cordish said, "it's going to implode on them."

That sentiment was voiced repeatedly at The East Coast Gaming Congress, a major annual casino industry conference, held this year in the newly opened Revel casino resort in Atlantic City. The $2.4 billion Revel is being counted on to help turn around Atlantic City's five-year slump. But several experts at the forum said the solution to Atlantic City's woes is the closure of one or more of its 12 casinos.

"Here in Atlantic City, we have assets for sale that literally nobody wants to buy," said Gary Loveman, president of Caesars Entertainment, which counts four Atlantic City gambling halls among its 56 casinos. "There is simply too much supply in Atlantic City. The supply doesn't go away. That's a very bad thing. The problem here? Nobody ever closes."

During a panel of Wall Street experts, Andrew Zarnett, managing director of Deutsche Bank Securities, said Revel might hurt, rather than help, Atlantic City's overall casino market.

"Everybody's a loser; when you add supply to a market that's not growing very much, everybody gets cannibalized," he said. "We need some of this capacity to close and go away. I would have thought that would have happened two years ago, but the properties are still here."

Zarnett said he doubts any Atlantic City casino will close until they see whether New Jersey will approve Internet gambling and throw the struggling properties a lifeline. He also predicted that New York will approve a casino in Manhattan within five years.

Not all the news from Atlantic City was bad, though: Figures released Thursday by state regulators showed the casinos saw a 17 percent increase in gross operating profit for the first quarter of this year, following a 26 percent increase in the fourth quarter of last year.

The expansion of casino gambling has continued rapidly over the last several years, nowhere more fiercely than in the Northeast. There is serious disagreement within the industry as to whether the market is oversaturated or whether there is room for further growth. But most agree it is tougher to do business in the Northeast casino market than it ever has been before.

The Cordish Co.'s Maryland Live!, opening on June 6, will have 4,750 slot machines and cost $500 million.

"Thanks, David, for bringing 4,700 new slots to this market," joked Don Marrandino, eastern division president of Caesars Entertainment. "That's great news for us."

Cordish said the casino market needs the stability of knowing how many operators there are going to be, particularly with the 67 percent tax Maryland imposes on its casinos.

He said the state will have four casinos with more slot machines "than anything in Las Vegas. It's an experiment that nobody knows how it's going to turn out. A contest I don't want to win is Maryland will probably be the king of the oversaturated market with the highest tax rate. It's a real problem.

"What happens when you put mega-casinos close together is they generally not only oversaturate the market, they don't work," Cordish said. In the Washington, D.C., region soon, he added, "you'll have four of the largest casinos in the country operating within a short drive of one another."

But new casinos keep coming. Timothy Wilmott, president of Penn National Gaming, which has 26 casinos nationwide, said the company is interested in new markets in Massachusetts and Texas and is opening new casinos in Ohio soon.

And Virginia McDowell, CEO of St. Louis-based Isle of Capri Casinos, which owns 15 casinos in six states, said there are excellent new markets that don't yet have casino gambling. The company plans two more, including one in Pittsburgh. She listed Massachusetts, Texas and Florida as prime spots for new casinos and said even traditionally hostile states such as Georgia, the Carolinas and Kentucky are considering legalizing them.

"Frankly, some of these opportunities are the best untapped gambling markets in the United States," she said. But, McDowell said, "the industry lets its best growth opportunities die on the vine, choosing instead to fight each other."

Mitchell Etess, CEO of Mohegan Sun in Connecticut, said the state's two Native American-run casinos once had few competitors, but the Northeast casino market is becoming more crowded.

And part of that will be due to Mohegan Sun, which is also seeking a casino license in Massachusetts.

A Letter to a Long-Lost Friend Pays Off | FamilyTreeUniversity.com

The Combs family cousins, about 1955, Washington, Ind.

Where I am from, everyone knows everyone else. I am pretty sure in my mother?s home county everyone is all related in some way, unless you are a foreigner (i.e. not born there). As you can imagine trees merge, intermingle, and sometime collide right into each other. This leads to people you never even thought about being in your family tree turning into cousins. Just so you all know, I think my parents merged the only two families in two counties that were not linked yet; or at least as far as I know.

I can remember a nice woman who was a teacher friend to my dad?s mom. My Grandma Combs was Miss Hilbert?s mentor and they became lifelong friends. They traveled together, worked together, and were in many of the same organizations. I even had Miss Hilbert as a substitute teacher a couple times when I was in first and second grades.

Then one summer Miss. Hilbert was at a Sanders family reunion that I went to with my mother?s mother. What was she doing there? Well, it turns out that Miss. Hilbert?s mother and my Grandma Arvin?s mother were sisters; both Sanders girls. That was when I started paying closer attention to exactly who came and went from family reunions over the next few years (as well as whether that cute boy I was making summer-crush-eyes at was a cousin too).

Miss. Hilbert had been a keeper of most of the family history for that side of the family. She never married, but she has always been diligent on keeping the family (now families) together and informed. A few weeks ago I ran across some old newsletter articles she wrote for the now defunct Arvin-Armstrong newsletter (we have an online group now) and wondered if she could still be alive. If she was I know she would be able to help me a lot with this research. Time was of the essence, as she had to be nearing ninety.

I have not been home to a family reunion since we left Indiana almost six years ago. Many things conspired against a trip home, but I am doing my best to make the 14 hour drive back this fall. I had not heard that Miss. Hilbert had died, so using some of the sleuthing techniques on finding living relatives I was taught through a Family Tree University course, I went to work.

I found her.

Using nice stationary, I hand-wrote a letter to her re-introducing myself, letting her know that I have taken up researching the family history and that I would love to correspond with her. That was the middle of March. In the second week of May I got a reply, and I had found the correct Miss Hilbert. She caught me up on her family, told me about how the Loogootee boys? basketball team won state in their division this year, and how she knew both of my grandmothers.

The best part: She sent me a photocopy of an index ?Mother Alford Sanders? had written listing the Sander?s parental lineage for three generations.

The page states:

G. Grandmother Wildman name

was St. Clair Burton

G. Grandmother Sanders

name was Gamble

Grandmother Wildman

name Mary Francis Moberly

died April 30 1864

Grandmother Sanders

Name Elizabeth Denning

Born May 27 1827 Died June 13 1880

Grandfather Armstead Wildman

Born Dec 6 1829 Died Mar 15 1900

Grandfather James Sanders

Born Sept 8 1829 Died Jan 30 1913

Aunt Ann Sanders died

Sept 22 1937 Wednesday 6.30 O Clock

Thankfully, it confirms some of the research I have done (or at least gives me another source), but it also gives me some more mysteries to chase. I am going to have to write her back and ask who the writer is. Alford is one of the names that have been in the area for a long time, and I am going to make the assumption that one of her uncles married an Alford. The question is which one? Also, who was Ann? It is a name I had not heard before and do not have in any of my records. The last question I am going to ask is: when was this written? There is neither a date on the page nor identification.

It always seems that there is always a mystery to solve or a name to chase with each new piece of evidence that lands in my lap. The thrill of the chase, as it were.

Kochs help Republicans catch up on technology

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - In the 2008 presidential race, Barack Obama was famously effective in using new technologies to raise money, mobilize voters and target his message of change.

In this year's campaign, his opponents are determined to turn the tables.

Republican political operatives, some with deep financial backing from the billionaire Koch brothers and others, are unleashing about a half dozen major projects that take advantage of advanced database technologies to manage campaigns and target voters with personalized messages.

Few doubt that political parties and factions that can gain an edge in the data wars will be in a good position on election day - and could potentially build institutional advantages that will pay dividends for years to come.

IPhone apps, Web-based campaign management and micro-targeting of voters with personalized messages are a few of the services built around database technology that the left has used to find and motivate voters, most impressively in 2008.

People in the increasingly competitive political technology business say the industry is still in an early phase, with the massive data-collection potential of social media and mobile computing only beginning to be tapped.

Nevertheless the field is already creating tension between grassroots activists suspicious of big, centralized databases and political professionals who say they are essential.

"If you are talking to anybody on the ground, Tea Party activists, they are tired of centralized control," said Steven Kuivenhoven, a Michigan Tea Party organizer who is avoiding Washington-based tech groups.

The Republican and Democratic parties have passed the banner of technological leadership back and forth over the past decade. The Republican Party built a massive database of voters for the 2004 election, then Democrats in the last presidential election pulled together an independent database called Catalist that improved cooperation among allied groups. This year outside groups are leading the charge, especially on the conservative side, a nod to the rising power of political action committees and advocacy groups.

Shoestring startups are competing with efforts funded by billionaires, which some conservatives embrace as a triumph of laissez-faire. "God bless the free market," said Constantin Querard, an Arizona political consultant who uses one of the startups, rVotes, for managing volunteers and voter data. "We are probably two two-year cycles from weeding out the software that was well done and the software that wasn't as well executed."

THE KOCH COUNTERPUNCH

In 2008, Catalist helped the left win the technology battle. The database allowed unions and the Obama campaign to manage volunteers without stepping on each other's toes. Meanwhile, analysts could look for patterns in oceans of data that had been held in small pools by separate groups.

Now, Charles and David Koch, who have quietly bankrolled libertarian organizations such as the Cato Institute and the influential Mercatus Center at George Mason University, are behind an effort that aims to do for the right what Catalist did for the left.

Called Themis, the independent group is the most ambitious of the many conservative political technology projects now in development. People with direct knowledge of the group as well as political technology industry veterans say it is backed by the Koch brothers, although their names do not appear on an annual regulatory filing and Koch Industries spokespeople did not respond to requests for comment.

The Kochs own Koch Industries, the Wichita, Kansas-based natural resources conglomerate that refines oil, produces chemicals and owns the paper products company Georgia-Pacific. Chief Executive Officer Charles Koch and his brother David are worth $25 billion each, according to Forbes.

Themis staffers in their twenties and thirties, clad in jeans and checked shirts, work out of a suite in a nondescript office building in Alexandria, Virginia. City records indicate that the company expanded recently, and a federal filing shows millions of dollars in the bank.

Themis operates like many other Koch projects - in secrecy. A reporter retrieving a federal filing from the company was not allowed inside the unmarked front door, and Themis executives declined or did not respond to requests for comment.

Themis raised $7.7 million in its first year, according to its 2010 return to the Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt 501 c(4) organization, which it released this year after successfully petitioning for the maximum possible delay. As a 501 c(4), Themis can work with advocacy groups but cannot coordinate with candidates.

The federal filing does not list financial backers, but people with direct knowledge of the group say it is backed by the Kochs. Ben Pratt, the chief operating officer, describes himself on LinkedIn as a former Koch Industries executive who is now a management consultant and executive coach teaching the business theories developed by Charles Koch.

Themis's ambition to become an analytical powerhouse for the right is clear from its list of business partners, including several heavy hitters in the computer analytics world. Its top contractor in 2010, paid $1.1 million, was voter database company Intell360, which employed former Republican National Committee Network and Online Services Director Steve Ellis at the time, according to LinkedIn.

Intell360's website describes services ranging from finding email and phone numbers for voters to "data mining" for voters likely to respond to tailored messages to targeting ads "down to the zip code, census block or individual level." Neither the company nor Koch Industries responded to requests for comment. Pratt declined to speak when reached by phone.

Despite the vast resources behind it, Themis may find it difficult to reach its goal this year. One person close to the group predicts it will not catch up to the left in the current campaign cycle; the Obama campaign is engaged in complex modeling and scouring social media data for information, people in the industry say. Another conservative data industry person said there is no sign of high-end modeling by Themis.

Themis does not have to catch up to make an impact, though. It is building its database and signing up advocacy groups to use its services and contribute data. The person close to Themis said its work focuses on identifying active supporters - those with a propensity to attend rallies or engage their representatives, for instance - and discovering the "cream of the crop" - persons active in several allied groups.

AN ALTERNATIVE SOURCE

The other major database effort on the right is a for-profit group called Data Trust, which is updating the Republican Party's somewhat dusty national file of voters. Modeled on Catalist, Data Trust hopes to make a profit by selling data to advocacy groups, candidates and business groups, incorporating clients' information into its database when they agree.

The party will keep its database, but Data Trust will be able to pay for updating and expanding the data in a way that Republicans have not had the resources to do in recent years, people familiar with the project say. However, it will leave the high-end analysis of data to clients.

Themis and Data Trust will be competitors at times. But there may be room for both: Themis caters to a conservative crowd that distrusts what it sees as the politically expedient instincts of the Republican Party. And some groups may want more than one database provider. "Never trust any one source 100 percent," said Gary Marx, executive director of the Faith and Freedom Coalition, a religious group in Duluth, Georgia, that is planning to find and contact 27 million potential conservative Christian voters in swing states this election cycle.

American Crossroads, a Washington D.C.-based conservative advocacy group led by former Republican Party officials and associated with Karl Rove, is not choosing sides, even though its chairman, former Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan, helps run Data Trust.

"We plan to be a client of Data Trust. We also have a good relationship with Themis," said Crossroads spokesman Jonathan Collegio.

GROUND GAMES

Themis and Data Trust may have trouble getting some potential allies on board. Plenty of grassroots groups say they don't need the help of a big, Washington-based database outfit and say they have what Republicans need most: real-time data. They are turning to new technology systems that let campaigns and groups manage volunteers and donors.

A plethora of new tech tools with names like Gravity, rVotes and NationBuilder can help organize door-to-door campaigns, harvesting the type of information that feeds a successful database. All the companies behind them are for-profit.

"If the local county group is knocking on people's doors, and identifying pro-life or anti-immigrant or anti-health-care voters, they could be flagging that information on the database and instead of having that information be in an activists' basement somewhere, it's flagged back on this master file and available to other organizations, which are wanting to organize around those issues," said Ken Strasma, head of data analysis firm Strategic Telemetry, which works for Democrats. "That's what could make this a very powerful tool."

Many grassroots activists are wary of big databases, however, especially if they are linked with Washington. Conservatives, like liberals, are not a monolithic group. Some factions would prefer to retain control of their data.

"I wish I had the Koch brothers' money, but I don't want to be beholden to them," said Peter Wolf, an Ohio Tea Party organizer. He supports rVotes, a program marketed to the right that intends to offer a national database in which campaigns control data they add.

Smaller groups may also be immune to the lure of the big databases because they can get low-cost help from companies such as Aristotle, an unaligned commercial vendor that sells voter records for 3 cents each and offers analytics and social media as well.

Utah Republican Senator Orrin Hatch failed to win his party's endorsement at the recent state caucus after a Tea Party campaign against him. He now faces a run-off primary battle. FreedomWorks, a group that has severed Koch ties, was a major instigator of the anti-Hatch effort. It used commercial database and analytics vendors to find likely caucus delegates. "What it took Orrin Hatch a year to do in terms of preparation for the caucus, we were able to do in a month and a half," said Russ Walker, vice president of political and grassroots campaigns for FreedomWorks for America. "I really do think the commercial world is ahead of us."

Whether the Kochs or any other group make a major leap forward will depend on how many allies they find. Querard, the Arizona political consultant, sees the technology race as a question of critical mass.

"Whoever's got the most users will probably see the most improvement," he said.

NTT DoCoMo's Galaxy S III to ship with 2GB RAM?

Image

Ah, Japan. That far east country what begot Mario most always gets to profit from the industry's more delightful excesses. This time, however, the spoils have less to do with gaming flash and more to do with smartphone specs. In a document recently released by NTT DoCoMo, the carrier's upcoming dual-core Galaxy S III variant is listed as doubling up on the available RAM, bypassing the standard 1GB announced at its official unveiling. It's not the first time we've seen an OEM shoot for the silicone stars, considering LG's headline-stealing Optimus LTE2 and monstrous LS970, so the swap could be likely. Nothing's set in stone quite yet, but given this is Samsung's flagship wünderphone, we doubt the company wants to be caught playing in its Korean rival's forward-looking wake.

Syria accused of new 'massacre,' UN team evacuated

Syrian forces were accused of summarily executing 15 civilians, as members of a UN team of observers were evacuated from a shelled town the day after a bomb blast hit their convoy.

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad, however, accused the West of ignoring violence by "terrorists" and said he would demand an explanation from Annan when he visits Damascus later this month.

"After regime forces raided the neighbourhood of Shammas (in the central city of Homs), 15 civilians were found summarily executed," Rami Abdel Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told AFP, in what he branded a massacre.

The overnight killings came a day the Observatory accused troops of another massacre in the town of Khan Sheikhun, in the northwestern province of Idlib, when they opened fire on a funeral procession and reportedly killed 20 people.

At least 12 more people were killed in incidents around the country on Wednesday, the Observatory said, while another four died of wounds suffered during the funeral in Khan Sheikhun.

During Tuesday's funeral, a convoy of UN observers was struck by a homemade bomb, damaging three vehicles but causing no casualties.

Because of blast damage to their car, six members of the team were forced to spend the night with activists in Khan Sheikhun, which came under heavy regime shelling, an activist said.

Annan's office said the UN mission had picked up the six military observers and that they were back at their team site in the central city of Hama.

It was the second roadside bombing involving the military observers' vehicles in less than a week, after six Syrian soldiers escorting a convoy were wounded in a May 9 bombing in Daraa.

The United Nations, which accuses both sides of violating an April 12 ceasefire, reaffirmed its condemnation of any violence against the monitors.

Meanwhile Syrian representatives stayed away from a United Nations anti-torture committee meeting in Geneva that raised allegations of systematic and brutal abuses in the violence-wracked nation.

Committee Chairman Claudio Grossman had written to Syrian authorities to question them about reports of torture in the country where a bloody crackdown on protesters was unleashed in March 2011.

But the call for a special report on the situation went unmet and Damascus questioned the committee's authority to request the document.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak urged the international community to increase pressure on the embattled regime of Assad, whom he said was "doomed".

Assad's departure would be a "major blow" to Iran as well as Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad, he told CNN.

However Assad, in an interview with Russian state news channel Rossia-24, accused the West of ignoring the real situation in his country.

He complained that, since the arrival of the UN observers there had been an increase in "terrorist attacks" despite a reduction in "direct confrontation" between government forces and their foes.

"The West only talks about violence, violence on the government side. There is not a word about the terrorists. We are still waiting," he said. "I will ask him (Annan) what this is about" when he next visits Syria.

Assad denounced the armed opposition as a gang of "criminals" who he said contained religious extremists, including members of Al-Qaeda. He also said many "foreign mercenaries" from Arab states fighting for the rebels had been killed.

Turning to legislative elections held on May 7, Assad said they showed that the Syrian people "are until now supporting the policy of reform" and "support the institutions of the state."

Voter turnout was only 51.26 percent and, so far, only limited results have been released.

The state news agency SANA reported that 250 people detained in relation to the revolt in Syria but "whose hands were not bloodied" were released on Wednesday.

According to the Syrian Observatory, around 25,000 people are currently detained in Syria. Annan's peace plan calls for the release of those detained in relation to the uprising.

Meanwhile, Annan himself urged Syria to stop delaying an agreement on allowing UN access to more than one million Syrians in need of assistance, saying the process had been "very slow."

More than 12,000 people, the majority of them civilians, have died since the uprising against Assad erupted in March 2011, according to the Observatory, including more than 900 killed since the truce came into effect.

The Washington Post reported on Wednesday that Syria's rebels have seen an influx of arms including anti-tank weaponry, in an effort coordinated with the help of the United States.

Officials in President Barack Obama's administration insist it is not directly supplying the weapons or providing funding, with Gulf states paying for the new arms, the newspaper said.

But Washington has stepped up links with the rebels and regional militaries allying with them, playing a role in the rebel's foreign support network, the report said.
